This is something we’ve been aware of and has been a thorn in our side. If it’s at all possible to record a short video that shows this happening (and even better, exactly what you did to make it happen again), that would help a ton. I’m sorry for the trouble.

I can imagine difficult. I think there’s a couple of videos and I’ll dig them up to link here.

That would be wonderful, thank you Kiki

On a related note - if you could also get the message to the devs that many of us would really like the return of persistent custom inventory sorting, that would be really great.

(Persistent as in we sort our inventory to whatever layout we desire - then set it to eg ‘Heaviest first’ - then when we return to ‘custom’ everything goes back to the places we had placed it. This is the system we used to have until the inventory revamp and was used by many of us. Now, with the new system, we have to keep the inventory set to ‘No Sort’ at all times if we don’t want it to lose all order permanently. Obviously, I recognise that this is not as high a priority as dealing with the actual inventory disfunction issues that the OP is having - but it’s loss has still been quite impactful for many players.)

This bug only happens on some servers. I only play on official servers and occasionally single player. If the server has the bug, it happens all the time and you need to change character and container inventory to No Sort. If the server doesn’t have the bug, sorting doesn’t matter.

Yeah, I no longer use anything other than ‘No Sort’ now, as I’m not about to manually reorganize my inventory to how I like it every time I want to use the other sorting options. The loss of the persistent custom sorting feature was one of the worst aspects of the inventory revamp. I don’t understand why this was deemed acceptable.

Not exactly a video @AndyB, but there is a GIF in this bug report thread I posted a while back which shows an item auto unequipping.

I thought I would also take the liberty of posting the footage here directly for you.

Equiping bug

For me personally getting the issue to take effect was simply a matter of clicking the R3 button to change the sorting.

I’ve run into several different inventory management bugs. I keep my player bench and chest inventories sorted by “Type”. If it happens, I’ll try to snag a video.

I need to retest the latest Xbox release, but here are some of the things that were happening in the previous release:

  1. Items disappearing in inventory - both player and bench inventories. Transferring all my items to a container and back would reveal hidden items.
  2. Crafting all on a bench (Y on Xbox) often does not craft at all. Have to use cross pad to move cursor a few times before Y will craft. This is fairly frequent.
  3. Occasionally quick transferring items will transfer all items even if they aren’t in the target inventory. Timing issue?
  4. Dropping items occasionally drops the wrong items. I think this only happens when some of the items are hidden per #1.
  5. Taking items from a bench using the hover menu often stops you from taking the last item. This one is very frequent. I think this often happens when there are blank spaces in the inventory that doesn’t show in the hover menu but does show when opening the full inventory.
  6. Inventories occasionally lose their configured sort.
  7. Equipping armor (like sandstorm mask) from inventory occasionally rubber bands back to previous armor. May only happen when items are hidden per #1. Not sure.

And some suggested improvements:

  1. Need ability to quickly re-stack inventories for players, benches, and thralls separately from sort.
  2. When crafting resources should be pulled from lowest quantity stack in order to preserve slots (both player and table inventories).
  3. When thralls eat, food should be pulled from lowest quantity stack in order to preserve slots (both thrall and thrall pots).

I went on a farming and crafting run today and logged the issues I found. I was able to capture a few items on video. See here for more details: March 2025 Patch - Inventory Bugs

FYI: Temp workaround for those using a sorting filter and experiencing invisible items causing inventory glitches; In your inventory, change to unsorted and move something into the slot after the last item (the very first empty slot in your now-unsorted inventory). It should update and show whatever was hidden. On Xbox, at least.
