Except on a PVP server, that would be a punishment for players that put in the effort already and a benefit for players who just farm other players who lost everything.

This. The fact that EA and Bethesda games still get any sort of traction is a testament to that. Their bugs and monetization are on legendary infamy status but still sell in the near billions.
Gamers in general talk a lot of talk. But open their wallets like they are giving freebies on the worlds oldest profession.
