Or a gun. IIRC that scene is a homage to a scene in a famous gunslinger movie. No question it’s supremely cool though.
I can definately review some sources for you regarding the rapier and the Epee. Mostly were used as dueling swords which is accurate. However unpadded chain was popualar for short periods. The rapier was strange in the fact that it had a number of variations. However when I was in school we lectured about how the rapier and epee had a design meant for going through elements of chainmail armor. I’ll see what I can dig.
Generally speaking however you would use concussive force on someone in chain as cutting is useless. There are some polearms. I want to say the Lucern Hammer which was basically a can opener hammer thing. It had a very narrow almost stiletto like point at the end. About 3 to 4 inches long in some cases which was designed to pucture butted chain or riveted.
My bad mate. Was not the epee. Was the Estoc. It was specifically designed to go through mail. That being said would depend on weave. Welded, butted or riveted. But in the end. Just give me something heavy and fracture the dude or lady
Just remembered another (brief) period where swords were used as a main weapon for a military unit: the Spanish rodeleros (“shield-men”) of the early 16th century. They were used to flank pike formations and were armed with a sword (a side-sword or rapier-type weapon), a metal shield (rodela) and armored with jackets and caps made of linen, wool or cotton. The unit type existed for only a couple of decades until it was decided it was too vulnerable to enemy cavalry and couldn’t handle a pike formation from the front, so when the Spanish adopted the famous tercio formations, the rodeleros were dropped.
The rodeleros managed to gain particular fame on one front, though: as Conquistadors. The popular image of a conquistador wearing metal breastplate and boat-shaped helmet and carrying a musket is mostly the creation of later-era artists (a lot of European art depicting e.g. Hernan Cortés’s expedition is from the 17th century and often depicts equipment of its own day rather than the equipment used a century earlier); over 80 % of Cortés’s troops were rodeleros, and of the rest, over a half were similarly armored crossbowmen and arquebusiers, with only a small handful of mounted, fully armored knights.
The thrusting swords and solid shields turned out to be effective against the lightly armored native Mexicans, repeatedly defeating armies many times their own manpower. The quilted jackets were adequate protection against flint or obsidian tipped arrows and javelins, although couldn’t protect against the great two-handed macuahuitls that, according to Bernal Díaz del Castello, could chop a horse’s head off with one blow. But shields were effective for turning away those blows.
Egyptian armies of the New Kingdom Era (around 1500 to 1000 BC) also fielded some infantry units armed with curved swords (khopesh), although the majority of their foot soldiers carried spears. Unfortunately that’s an era with which I’m not very familiar.
Since I love the axes in CE, I was really excited to get this sword last night. Left Glimmermoon in my boudoir and headed back to the Unnamed City to keep farming fragments. As it got dark, I went to equip my glow-stick only to discover the harsh truth about this weapon:
The Lying Bastard Sword uses a 1-handed weapon combo, but gets equipped as a 2-hander. So while it’s stats would make it the best “axe” in game, the inability to use off-hand items drops it down into the level of the Jedias Greatsabre or BP’s Razor with with a shorter combo.
To sum up my feelings on the matter, I’ll defer to Kevin Sorbo:
I tried to warn you! The sword is so confusing, one can’t even use a torch.
Redemption is found in the Venom-Infused Axe. I think @Cauthey’s expression was “holy shnikees!” It’s on my compelling reasons to work the Undead City list.
Got the recipe for that last night, guess I’ll have to give it a shot. Still wondering why most of the additions I’ve seen in the Undead City seem to be intentional trolling, it just feels bad.
May I ask how many scrolls you are redeeming at a time? Cauthey and I went through an amazing string of luck two days ago on different servers by turning in three at a time. His idea, being the RNG lucky charm that he is.
The Lying Bastard is absolutely spot-on for fighting any wolf below the Corrupted one. If you swap between this sword for fast bleeds and cripples, then to an axe plus throwing axe, you can whirlwind him in a stunlock. Rinse and repeat.
Usually at least 4 or 5 at a time, though last night I turned in 7 at once and got 2 different poisoned weapons (axe, 2-h sword), glasser, 2 kilns, the stool, and the market signs.
The venom axe is sooo choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.
I’ve not exercised it in PvP combat yet. But against some leftover pet guardians, it makes quick work of a 4-5k health pool. The drain with a multiple bleed, multiple poison DoT stack is very satisfying. I make a practice of carrying a couple of venom weapons, and keeping at least one hotbar’d. Just to be able to swap to in case of a PvP incursion. Especially if I get a drop on someone, and they are suddenly popping heals. Or, perhaps, to lead with for a “shock and awe” that has the opponent scrambling, and as a result, takes them off of their game.
I like the Lying B Sword.
My big thing about the new weapons. Especially the venom infused is that they are to good.
The PVP balance is way out the window at the moment. Sure its level 60 stuff, but using them againt a level 45 or even 50 seems rather imbalanced in general.
Sure Cureall and Set antidote is good. But really it only stacks so much and is very heavy.
Things are a little off kilter at the moment and I am expecting a nerf bat to hit it square in the chops.
If they give me a decent magical bow which can do more than cripple. I’ll fogive all of these imbalances and embrace this highly noticible mistake in balancing.
Becuase I to will be imbalanced.
But I do love my Lying B Sword.
I truly do.
