Made a video explaining how Shelter works

Not much of a youtuber, but the other day there was some conversation about shelter on the steam forums and it gave me an idea to make a video, since I already had this tool I made back when we were checking building temperatures

Anyway, enjoy my mad ramblings!

Thanks brother, really appreciated :folded_hands:.

Thank you - that was very insightful.

Hmm I was under impression, that back in the days highier tier building sets provide better insulation - and that they differ like f.e. black ice provided better heat protection, while insulated wood helped with cold. But that was removed long ago or I just have early sympthoms of dementia

Very interesting. As you say, not very intuitive, but definitely useful to understand.

You mention (and demonstrate) that it detects the directions from the character’s head - presumably therefore crouching can change the precise positioning of this detection? (That might explain why the old crouching in tight against a cliff sometimes works - though I would imagine, based on this video, the success or fail there is particularly governed by how directly the cliff aligns with the cardinal directions and the crouching is an option that might be better or worse depending on precise circumstances.)

A long time ago, that was true. It is no longer.

It does not. Crouching is just an animation that does not change your character’s actual location. Jumping does change your location though, so will affect it.

I find the video very disorienting. With only one minimap, it is nearly impossible to understand where north is or where the character is in the wider world. Can hardly concentrate on the content due do that.

Yes, we know you need at least three minimaps to be able to tell which way you are facing

That’s interesting. But how does that work with collision, given that there are times when crouching will allow a character to get under something that is otherwise too low?

This little technical detail is probably connected with mesh issues more than anything i guess. We can ask from @Xevyr whenever he wishes and only if he wishes, to explain us how mesh is glitching to the one direction and we get shelter in a stone of unnamed city for example that not every side is covered. Still we will have to give him exact locations for investigation, which i am unable to do since i don’t play on pc .

But I find this guide very educational for new players and i don’t believe so far we had a video like it . Other than that sandstorm is not severe anymore ,the game allows you to use wraps and heal your self in the process, all you need is to carry some fiber in the beginning, no big deal.

We have a very buggy game brother in the end and surely it ain’t our fault, neither @Xevyr ‘s fault.

Exactly, crouching allows passing through rock corridors or lowered doors (I use that to hide doors behind planters, just one fence foundation lower than floor).

Yes, that’s specifically why I put that text on the bottom, in case some people might still remember news like that from earlier.
Building pieces do have stats in existence for shelter temperature, but the game simply doesn’t use them.

It actually does change a bit, but it’s not directly anchored to the characters head. It takes the location of the character (which would be around the center) and adds a fixed offset.
When you crouch, while it is just an animation, at the same time the collision capsule of the character (invisible cylinder with rounded ends around the character, shaped like a pill, hence the name) does get reduced in height - that’s how you can fit under things - which causes the center to shift down a bit, since it scales from the center, but still needs to touch the ground.

The result is that when crouched, these trace lines are slightly lowered, but only a miniscule amount about as much as the size of the characters head.

That is unfortunate :frowning: I tried to reduce visual clutter, even minimized the damage meter!

Landscape can have uneven surfaces, especially with cliffs poking out at the top, depending on the landscape orientation, often hugging a cliff closely will make it so it intercepts 3 of these lines or even 4 if it’s a corner and can provide shelter.

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation

I got the impression this was a joke about Khaletohep’s preference for as many minimaps as possible

Honestly  I think he’s just waiting for me to tell him how he can hide the other ones

Excellent video, thanks for taking the time and sharing!

Thanks!
