I have had it a few times now where I accidentally opened a Legendary Weapon chest while out exploring. I often keep a couple keys on me just in case I end up finding a chest and I want to check the weapon out. But too many times I have accidentally opened a chest and wasted a key because I already had the weapon. I suppose I could be more aware of what I’m doing but i still think it would be generally better for these chests to look different and special somehow.

Legendary chests have randomly generated content. You’re not “wasting keys” on chests because every time you use one, you’re spinning the same Wheel of Fortune, which may (and often does) result in duplicate weapons.

Almost all legendary creatures that drop the keys have a legendary chest somewhere nearby.
If you kill the creature, find its chest and use the key right away. Carrying the keys around is more wasteful than using them.
Even the 3 skulls scorpion in the Sepermeru Silver Mine ? It drops a skeleton key but I searched the cave using a glowing stick for light source, and didn’t find any chest. If there’s a legendary chest, it’s very well hidden.
Then I used the key to open the chest in G4 . The giant croc is never close to it, so it’s possible to open it without agroing him. Useful if you got some unused skeleton keys.
Yes, the legendary chest is next to the Scorpion Queen (who doesn’t drop a key).

Then I killed last time the white tiger and the 3skull elephant (around G7) and only found 1 chest. Probably for the white tiger.
Yes, for those examples and also legendary creatures that spawn during a purge is why I added “Almost” in front of “all legendary creatures that drop the keys have a legendary chest somewhere nearby.”
Yeah, an elaborate chest with gold trim (requiring actual gold to craft) would be cool.
