Which is why using “realism” in a game like Conan holds no weight.
To be honest he’s actually doing pretty fine until they’re 3v1
Cavalry historically beats infantry. In the topic creators situation the guy on the horse probably would have won on foot either way. His gear was probably better, his thrall was probably leveled…speculating of course.
I don’t feel the mounted combat is broken rather there’s just not an effective counter for it.
There are actual lances with their own mechanics for the riders, perhaps there should needs to be a proper pole arm , like an actual pike, for the infantry
Yes a counter would’ve been good. But Funcom went the other way.
Right now hitting from horse back multiplies your damage by 2. Do you think this is justified especially when you simply stand next to a person in melee and out-trade him in damage? Also add the fact that Conan Exiles is a game and not a horse riding simulator.
I always wanted longer pikes that you can hold down with the block key while unable to walk to counter the horse attacks.
And traps that if a horse runs into them, they would immediately get the player off the horse.
Haven’t tried this yet, would only work on your claim or unclaimed land, but maybe just have a single wall palisade on your dial and try and drop it right in front of a charging cavalry. Like I said, haven’t actually tried it before.
… they didnt even express such things as the idea to supress land claim for palissades and to reduce their decay time when the owner is away…
since the begining it seems that the main objective was to make the horse a transportation thingy, a bicycle… a bicycle for “Riders of Hyboria”
Just double arrow damage against mounted players. You got your balance and still makes sense logically.
Historically, if an arrow pierced your flesh, there was a high chance that you were out of the fight. Historically, you needed a lot of time to recuperate from any wound. Historically, the word “crippled” referred to people who had a disability for the rest of their lives, instead of having it disappear in 10 seconds. Historically, being poisoned meant you would be puking your guts out, or unable to breathe, or some other symptoms that would incapacitate you and render you unable to fight. Historically, munching on insects wasn’t a very healthy diet and wouldn’t heal your injuries.
I could go on, if that’s not enough ![]()
Yes, the horses needed a counter. It’s not like nobody ever asked for one. But Funcom decided to nerf them instead ![]()
We could keep asking, but I’m not very optimistic about that stuff anymore…
People keep suggesting this and I have to wonder if anyone ever went through the mental exercise of imagining this. It’s an action that’s designed for building, not fighting. Have you guys forgotten how finicky the building system can be, how frustrating it can be to try to place something precisely where you want it? And now you want to be able to place a palisade onto a spot that will be in the path of a charging horse, accounting for all the possible latency issues?
Not to mention that it sounds as fun and dynamic as sitting down to play some chess in the middle of a football match.
Come on, if we’re really getting inspired by history, then we should keep in mind that the description of the Battle of Agincourt isn’t “some English infantry stumbled into the path of the charging French cavalry, turned around, ran a bit, and pounded some stakes into the ground, and then they all duked it out on foot”.
Look, guys. Conan Exiles is not a strategy simulation. The combat is supposed to feel fun and full of action. Wars work differently from the combat you see in movies and comics.
You’re the second person I’ve seen on these forums who suggested archery being used as a counter to mounted combat, and I absolutely love the idea.
It would be awesome if Funcom could implement a system like that, where “knight” beats “footman”, “footman” beats “archer”, and “archer” beats “knight”. Maybe that way Conan Exiles could finally go from having 1 meta to having 3 distinct metas ![]()
Srsly? The power shot from the bow is currently the goto for dismounting cavalry…
And dropping a palisade isn’t any harder than dropping jars
Yeah and totally historically inaccurate and unrealistic. /s
Yep. “Nerf this” “nerf that”… what’re you going to do when life catches and nerfs you?
That’s the proof why horse combat is not broken, it makes the things even. I’m a good pvp player myself, and I tought it was plain stupid to take on 5 guys on foots and kill em all… with horses, I would think twice if I wanna fight em
not fixed, but useless now … thx to a part of pvpers
funcom worked hrad to make mounted combat special and fun and not only a traveloption.
unfortunately FC once again be dissuaded from their own concept by a misguided part of the community
(I am talking about the testlive version 2.4)
You can still move faster and you still do more damage… How is it useless?
FC do have a tendency to nerf OP in to uselessness but I don’t think this is one of them.
We need this:
There we go again? Realism?
Chivalry beats infantry, yes.
We can go down aaaall the way to discover how the battlefields changed throughout the years, and how the war changed in
this contest (war never changes
) but the issue is:
chivalry beat infantry, and then modern weapons (muskets, guns, rifles and so on) ended chivalry…
We can go into “realism” for the sake of philological and historical accuracy debate but…
Damn if someone buys a game for “barbarians” who cares a
-banned word- about that aspect?
I no longer play Conan but the feel of raw meat, steel and melee combat was the focusing point of the game, why changin it into a chivalry realistic progression warfare?
Yes is logical that a horseman deals considerable amount of damage to foot soldiers but I think it goes far from the initial flavour of the game itself.
Let there be horses yes, but make sure they do not steal the show: keep it to the original core, be barbarians!
I have always advocated against horses.
However, I think funcom is very lazy in design.
Whether you like it or not, horse fighting is part of the game now. Instead of nerfying on the ground, FUNCOM should seek balance.
For example:
There are 3 types of saddles but only ONE is usable in PvP and even in PvE, causing another 2 types of saddles (approximately 10 items to be pure memory waste).
PS: btw the silent legion saddle is the most beautiful.
Rather than absurdly nerfing the horse’s damage, they should add a CRIPPLE debuff when the horse is hit by a weapon on the ground, and slightly decrease the damage (from 2.0x to 1.7x or 1.5x) not to 1.0/1.2x (hitting when mounted does less damage than on ground now LOL)
When I say a cripple debuff, I do not mean the current debuff that the horse receives when hit on the leg, but something similar to the cripple that the player receives, slowing it’s move speed.
That way it would make it easier to chase a mounted rider when he is hit.
Bearing in mind that it is very easy for you to outrange and maneuver around a player on the ground, the rider would still have a lot of advantage.
Different saddles could have roles related to that …
The medium and heavy saddles would slightly decrease the effectiveness of the cripple debuff, making them more tanks compared to the light saddle.
This reminds me to something
(light armor META)
I would do it based on the movespeed you have. Like add the velocity to the damage. Max damage multiplier would be 2.0 like we currently have. Because this boggs me the most: you are standing on horse next to someone and can still outtrade them.
