New player looking for starting suggestions

My wife and I just installed the game, rented a dedicated server and are ready to tough it out in the exiled lands. We have thousands of hours in survival games so we know the general drill, but we don’t know this world at all.

We enjoy playing as a duo, are not typically interested in managing pets or thralls, and we enjoy the leveling journey. She will probably craft armors and handle medic and foods, I will be focusing on building and combat skills. That’s about all we can say about our gameplay preferences at this point.

How do we get started in getting into this world? Should we immediately scout out a good base location or be nomads till we find a good location? Should we get geared up asap, is it like some survival games where we will die if we don’t have a shelter up the very first night? What’s a good duo weapons combo? In general, what’s a good progression model for a duo like us?

Thanks for any insights or suggestions. One of the things that convinced us to take this plunge was the community we’ve witnessed here, and we look forward to being part of it!

I would focus on the Journey steps. Good way to learn the game while unlocking new items and useful information.

I’ve played on an off since launch but I am by no means an expert. I don’t know about rented servers, but if it’s the same as choosing a server, choose the way you want to play. PVP made me quit this game several times. I’m a solo player and unless you invest endless hours or have lot’s of online friends you will lose everything, sometimes several times a week. I switched to PVE-C and enjoyed the game way more but the server is full of lag bc of overcrowded and overbuilt bases. At least this way my stuff is not offline raided while I sleep.

As far as the “game”. Build a small starter base, but plan to build something better later. Level to 60 quick by running around the map scouting and fighting. Kill spiders or gorillas. You unlock easier methods to do things later. Watch youtubers like WAK. This game doesn’t always explain things the best. Have back-ups. This game is glitchy and has griefers and you will die from stupid things. I stopped getting mad when I had tons of extras in different places. Don’t get attached to things.

I hear you about PvP and griefers. We are renting a dedicated server to host our own game for just the two of us, so we’re not worried about griefers or PvP. Thanks for the response!

We’ve been doing the Journey steps but I’m wondering why we should both be doing all of them. We don’t need two shelters (we started our own clan to share privileges), we don’t need two of every step, etc. I like the Journey system, it’s been very helpful, but it feels like a mandatory quest given all the Rewards you get as you complete each Journey, and that’s driving us to each do each of them. Is there a better way to do this as a duo?

The journey steps level you nicely at the beginning and on a first playthrough will help you learn the basic mechs.

You should have a small shelter to start, or carry the pieces to build one fast, in case of sandstorm.

I’m kinda the opposite of learning things out of game. Savor the not knowing everything when possible. It’ll be gone soon enough.

For starting tips I would say don’t try to build large with stone or iron tools. Assuming you don’t use creative mode. Would be a mind numbing grind.

Look for a good source of iron before deciding on a starter base spot. You will need lots of it.

Crafter thralls allow you to make better items or craft faster. They don’t function like fighter side kicks or pets.

Place a bed at your base and always put a bedroll down near where you’ll be fighting/exploring.

The Arena Champion likes hugs… So always have a spare key to her area in a chest somewhere.

If it’s just the two of you, then I’d still have back up’s for the game killing you. Sorcery lets you summon your corpse to get your lost loot back Sorcery also gives you portals for fast travel. The Unnamed city has bosses that give you fragments of power to trade in the library for recipes or gain knowledge points beyond level 60. You can outrun everything you don’t want to fight. Horses at a trot move quicker than enemies without stamina drain. Thralls aren’t that strong anymore so watch their health. Use bedrolls outside of dungeons. The dregs and the witch queen dungeons are pretty easy to start with. Use a weapon you like but I’ve always went strength with the ancient axe and a shield, maybe lemurian spear. Yog intro stuff is good health refill. Set has poison arrows.

Welcome Exile!!!
I personally think that you two should focus on exploring and checking out this strange new land, leveling in the process and just enjoying the scenery. Setting up a small starter base is quite useful and is always nice to return to after a great adventure. It will also introduce you to some of the benches needed in a base and give you an idea of how big your next base “needs” to be when you find a suitable, kickass location.

Some tips (No spoilers):

  • Conan Exiles’ map is very linear in difficulty where the further North you go the harder its gets.
  • Journey steps will help learn mechanics but can be ignored, although I would probably not. CE has allot of stuff.
  • There are mounts for faster travel in game apart from a couple aforementioned sorcerous options…
  • Try and avoid the wiki for that sense of discovery but if frustrated its one of the best sources of information.
  • Thralls are an important part of the game, and some game mechanics are built around thralls and base defense. Thralls are always better than pets in their current state, but look really cool in and around the base.

Good luck and may your blades strike true!!!

@Harperson what gives man. Do you really need to go from thread to thread spamming the dislike button? Even when they are good natured and well intended?
