New player to Conan Exiles

From a few games I’ve messed with, Pro of a server is extra server options. You can fine tweak things much further then in-game setting.
Not super useful… but some setting only work with Server Set up.

Other is World itself, Server based, means everything is remembered. Cleared out the enemy base? now you can go back and keep looting.
SP, you can just build a small outpost outside of it… drop it off and go back in.

Timers (farming, decay etc) are fully active on a Server, in SP may not always be up.

Minecraft server I play on is like this, SP, anything within 4 chunks timer is movin, if I’m out exploring… none of my crops are growing and smelters do nothing.

Server, always active.

Main Con is having pay for server, or having invest into know how to set one up yourself.
And there often “online” lag. I’ve rented Conan Server for ps4 for me and my Brother and RP group before (expensive as hell) Theres a delay… just never present in SP.

If you got money to spare, Server is neat 2nd option to try. I don’t got know how or money to build/set up my own server.

If your happy with SP… little reason to not leave it.

I’d have to let you know when I find one.

In seriousness though, its hard to find one that comes close to Conan Exiles. Even among its harshest critics, you’ll see that many of them have been at it for literal years. You’ll find many people here with literally thousands of hours played. And even once you feel like you’ve played it out, there’s mods for those of us on PC. Even just playing a different map will double (or more) the content you have available.

One of the closest games I’ve played would have been Everquest Landmark. It was a voxel based building/survival game. But the voxels were resizable. You could build just about anything you could think of. No game came close to that. The exploration was very similar to Terraria, except in 3D. I used to call that game the 3D Terraria because of the style and aesthetics. Unfortunately that game was canceled in development.

Valheim isn’t too bad. Its building system is actually what I would call somewhat superior to CE. But you’re limited by its limited number of building styles, and by the system being a tad strict. To really get enjoyment out of that one, you need to mod it. Its one of those games where you play it for a few hours and go… ‘ok doing this like that sucks… can I mod it…?’ and yes, yes you can thankfully. Just having Valheim Plus makes the game so much more enjoyable. But I will say every time I do a playthrough, I only get like a dozen or two hours out of it. Where my CE stints will go for hundreds of hours over a spawn of a year or more. It doesn’t have much (has some) exploration for underwater or caves, but makes up for it by having sailing, which can be fun… or annoying for some. I liked it, but then again I loved playing Archeage.

Empyrion is another interesting survival game. Its got a scifi bent. But you build your ships and vehicles block by block as well as your bases. Its very simplified version of Space Engineers building system. Instead of having to pipe every thing together, just placing it makes it ‘work’. You can explore planets in a procedurally generated galaxy, and its surface to orbit transitions are better than Starfields (as in they are there). I don’t quite play this one as much as CE, but if you sort my library by time played, this is a solid second place.

Then Space Engineers is an honorable mention. Its kind of a survival game. But its more focused on the physics and building aspects. You need to connect containers to crafting stations and fuel tanks to thrusters, and all that. I like to call this one legos for us older folks. Not much to explore unfortunately. You have to go into that one with an idea to build ‘something’ and the challenge is to do it, then do it again but better.

All of these games I have played primarily in singleplayer with the exception of Landmark, which I closed beta tested with a few friends before it was canceled. And I did play all of them in dedicated servers locally. Though Valheim doesn’t give much benefit to doing so for singleplayer. But I tend to do so anyway because maybe a friend might drop in to play for a bit.

But I will say this, if you’re even a casual fan of Robert E. Howard, enjoyed his stories, or heck just had a soft spot for the 1980’s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, then Conan Exiles will hit a sweet spot that will be hard to let go. Even if you stop playing for a bit, you’re very likely to come back. I’ve taken up to several months breaks at a time only to return for a year or so. I don’t even get that kind of playtime out of a MMORPG. Many here have very similar experiences.

yah without the low fantasy sword & sorcery vibe, any other survival crafting game can have the exact same mechanics and do them 10x better, and i won’t have the interest in it that i have in CE.
despite it’s faults, the setting and world-feel of this game just can’t be found anywhere else.

Well, I would try a private server first if I were you, as the official servers can be quite ugly with the overwhelming number of buildings. Also, because the official servers are time consumming (the decay of your buildings is activated, they disappear if you do not play regularly). Just select a private server in the list, which fits the kind of gameplay you are looking for (RP, chill, vanilla, new player friendly, English - or whatever language you’d like it to be-, etc.). You might want to check the age of the server too, as private servers close the day the owner stops paying for it. Change the settings if needs be to refine your search.

Only go to the official if you have a bad experience with the private servers you had a shot with. It is just my opinion, some players might advise you the contrary.

Hey again @Taemien reading this text of yours was truly an inspiration for me as to make me realize that i do want to play and experience Conan Exiles even if it is as a solo player, it has that mode so might as well enjoy it, then later on i might try it on some official server.

I have to agree with you and i understand what you mean, like it’s not easy to come across games that can be meaningful, me I’m more one to play games that only get my interest, I’m not one to play games just because they are hype or popular…look at me all these years later I’m here playing Conan Exiles for the first time.
My first survival ever was DayZ, i bought it way back in 2013 when it released has a very early access title, i don’t remember when i stopped playing it but it was a long time ago but i left 2000 hours in that game, i know it was in a alpha stage, bugs, glitches, hackers but man i had grown to love the intense atmosphere that the game delivered, noises, the wind, and in pvp i had situations where i could be involved in a showdown for hours, that was my very first survival game, granted it had a strong pvp component but i loved it. After i was like done with the game down the road i would check it from time to time but it has been years since i tried it, i even bought into that zombie survival wave that came thanks to DayZ, like H1Z1, Miscreated, maybe a few others but they never caught my interest like DayZ did.

I know that the zombie survival titles were a big thing back in the day, and these days we can see games around that theme still, i mean everyone was trying to create the next big zombie survival.
As a gamer i always loved RPG and MMORPG games, Skyrim, Warcraft RTS, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy 7, 8, 10, 14 (the MMORPG), Witcher (1-3), Elden Ring, to name a few, so to me transitioning from a game like DayZ to any of the previous ones wasn’t and isn’t hard at all, there’s people out there that only love shooter games like the COD’s, Destiny 1 & 2 (i love those), as for me i can easily navigate through genres.

I am currently playing World of Warcraft Classic, a version of the game that tries to be a close portrait of the game that came out in 2004, i didn’t play it back then, my journey in WoW started in Pandaria so i missed everything previous to that, now it feels nice to experience myself that big nostalgia that was important to so many gamers throughout the years, i play Crusader Kings 3 as well because i love strategy games and now well I’m getting a glimpse into the universe of Conan the Barbarian that i have grown to love with the movies and some comics.

It feels great to be alive to be honest.
