The idea is pretty much to craft a small obelisk and place it (for example inside your base) to get a personal teleport point from the map room. Limitations would be that only you can use it and you can only have one at the time (if you place a second one, the old one gets destroyed like a bed roll). It should also be quite expensive to build (like a map room. It also would emmit corruption like a big one so you have to make a dedicated area for it inside your base.
I think personal obelisks would prevent the area around the normal obelisks from beeing cluttered with bases. Since you can make your own teleport point in your base.
