I’m on Official server #3555 and my animal pen decayed in one day of me being offline and I had just put pets in the day before. First time I’ve ever had a problem with this game.

Did you have the animal pen placed directly on the ground ? Was it next to another structure … that is within one to two foundation blocks?
Did you check it’s maximum decay time with a repair hammer after you placed it?
Many placeables have a short decay time if they are placed directly on the ground and not right next to a larger structure that the game considers a base. If placed very close to a base with a high decay time then the items on the ground might have the higher decay time extended to them as the game has associated them with the larger close-by structure. I find this occurs with fishing traps and palisades easily.
I’ve found that this is less likely to occur for wheels of pain and perhaps also Animal pens. Whilst these are large they are only one item and the game usually assigns based on number of pieces and combinations of pieces. Eg 6 x 8 foundations + walls + roof + door + doorway = base with higher decay timer than simply a row of foundations.
