(PS4 PRO Tested) Conan Exiles and External SSD on consoles = Massive Improvement

The following is as short as I was able to keep it

So, yesterday I was thinkering with mt PS4 version of Conan Exiles, that as we all know, is not exactly known for its great performance (same on Xbox).
The console versions of Conan Exiles suffer of delayed texture and sound stream, as well as a very annoying stuttering.
I always suspected that the cause of these problems that make any console player less enjoyable was the trashy Hard Drive those consoles have as stock equipment, added to the game which is very little optimized for those systems, of course.
Please note, of course I am not the one discovering this, but I wanted to bring my personal experience to the forum community, hoping to help as many as possible enjoying the game as it was meant to be.

Few days ago I bought a Samsung T5 external portable Solid State Drive (500Gb), found online for around 150 euro/dollars, that I purchased for different reasons than gaming.
Since this Samsung external SSD (which comes with USB-USBc and USB-USB cable included) is really easy to hook up to a PS4 ( I guess is the same for an XBOX, but never tested) I give it a try to see how the game was running on it.

The procedure is really for everyone, and does not require opening any part of the console, therefore leaving the factory warranty intact.
All you have to do is plug the SSD into one of your USB ports, and navigating the console system format the SSD to make sure the PS4 is able to install any size of data in it.
Then, move the desired application/game into the SSD, and launch the game normally from your PS home screen (plenty of detailed tutorials online, but is really easy and straight forward).

I loaded the game running from the external SSD in one of my most heavily built bases, crowded with around 40 thralls all around, plus various pets, chests, benches, etc.
I always experienced lag and heavy stuttering while going around there, and especially the stuttering (seconds of total freeze of the image) was the most annoying part of my gameplay there.
I was barely stepping around this base in fact, just to keep it up, but I was sick of playing it due to terrible performance with it.

With (very little) surprise, the game has drastically changed for the better.
Texture delay streaming is almost unnoticeable, sounds play properly, the stutter is limited to the very first seconds when the base loads, after that , I can go from chest to chest, and from bench to bench without a single moment of image lock up, and when rarely does happen still, is a fraction of second and not the 2 to 5 seconds the normal HD provides. Totally acceptable.
It might be placebo, but the general look of the game is way better, probably due to the fact that the system is not forced continuously to swap textures to keep everything running.
Now wherever I look there are high definition textures properly loaded, doors open in real time (!), enemies load animations in real time (!) (you actually see the enemy going down with the proper animation when dies…) and when rarely they do not in real time, the delay is again a fraction of second and totaly fine for the general gameplay.
I still notice a bit of stuttering while running full speed through the land and changing quickly scenario, but again nothing compared to the unbearable stock HD performance.
Loading and rendering speed for players bases as well drastically improved.
In short, this fixes 90% of CE issues on PS4 , and I think could do the very same for XBOX.

Now, the question why the game is not optimized at all for the standard PS4 hard drive remains.

But, I can confirm that even using an external SSD, which theoretically has worse performance than an internal SSD on PS4 -drastically improves the game experience.
(even though someone has pointed out that in this case an external SSD using the USB 3.0 standard, like the one in this test, would perform even better than the SATA 3 the PS4 PRO uses)

So, here you have it, and since I don’t work for neither Samsung or any other SSD manufacturers, but I am just a passionate player who hates the way the game runs on consoles, you can take my word for good, and value if the investment worths your gameplay improvement.

One thing I forgot to mention, and it’s a downside, the quicker and better texturing of the scene, and better general data streaming may reduce the scene Frames Per Second (FPS).
This I noticed in a base that was normally very high fps for me, now looks much better, all detailed, no stutter at all, but I think I have lost at least 5 to 10 FPS.

This SSD could work for pcs as well?

It should, not sure how windows manage games installed on external storage devices though, but should work just fine.

Yes. SSD I got 6 months ago on pro is awesome sauce. Didn’t really work until I got the pro. As far as for working on your PC a SSD will always increase performance and load times but by how much will depend a lot on your process power and graphics drive since the SSD can feed the information almost instantly it’s up to the process power to make since of it.
