Does the game’s performance around the fortress improve if I besiege and demolish the fortress with trebuchet?
It respawns.
As DeaconElie says, unfortunately it will just come back (and fairly quickly) - if you are playing in a context that allows for mods - Xevyr did create a mod that removes the fortress entirely (and therefore solves the fps issues it causes) - but obviously, this solution solves nothing for the public servers or for any private server that you do not have control over the mods on.
If it’s single play or a private server there is a mod, just can’t recall the name of it
Just an educated guess here: destroying all the barrels, palisades, torches, and other placeables but leaving the structure intact so that it doesn’t respawn might help. The fortress has a LOT of placeables, enough that it would be an illegal build on every server I’ve ever played on just from placeable count alone. Placeables have a bigger impact on FPS than build pieces because build pieces are instanced meshes and placeables are not.

And what could make it worse is some one building a base practically on top of the main gate, 3 stories high, with a dozen or more archers in aggro range. And hey, for fun lets make it a full base with a bar, dancers, work stations, disco lights, greater friendship wheel, and ya got to have dragon heads on every wall as tightly as you can get them.
So now that those archers are hard at work drawing tons of enemies to that side, lets go take the gate before the bodies pile up enough to lag everyone out.
