Religion is dumb in Conan Exiles

huh…

PVE wise, its outfits and great buff items… Going crazy to earn Avatar is abit… odd. they work on clearing area out, but you’ll often find yourself dead from one npc who ran up and killed you if you don’t prep for it, lol.

Some good QoL stuff with a few of them.

Religion is PVP tool only. That makes religion dumb. Each religion has 4 total feats. Religion has it’s own tab.

Perhaps religions other than Crom’s could attract worshippers, being an alternate thrall system to the wheel of pain.

Hi ocamrazor. My friend I respectfully disagree; Crom is a perfectly valid choice for a religion both in the books and the game. Your belief while rooted in a certain level fact, is an example of catastrophising. Crom is first and foremost a cold, distant and uncarring being. Crom cares little for men other than allowing them to exist, while he broods from atop his great mountain Ben Morgh, which is considered sacred to Cimmerians. His sole gift to men is at the time of their birth, where he imbues them with the power to strive, slay, succeed and overcome. Free will, intelligence and self-determination are his gifts to us. Crom ultimately does not care for, nor meddle in the affairs men. That is the norm, however like all norms there are exceptions to this. Yes it is true that there are a number of incidents of Crom smiting individuals. He despises weaklings and it is generally dangerous to call upon him for aid. Although, there is also a small handful of times he has actually helped people he percieves as worthy, including twice helping Conan himself. However as stated these are the exceptions, NOT the norm.

Here is where I feel your calibration is off. While Crom dislikes being called upon (ie-asked for help), he does NOT dislike being worshipped, he is simply indifferent to it. The official Wiki reiterates this; he is (line 1) “The god who requires no worship.” It will simply yield you no reward. Finding faith and worshipping a god is not just about ‘asking for things’. I have provided numerous lore referenced examples of people doing this, here are some examples. The ability to strive and slay are granted to a Cimmerian child at birth through a Cimmerian ceremony of worship. Crom and a statue of him are openly worshipped in a cave on the Eastern side of Ben Morgh. Weapons have been forged in honour of him. Crom also accepts animal sacrifice (but not human sacrifice), with Conan himself once sacrificing a goat to him as restitution for saving him.

While often used as an expletive, Crom is also unlikely to strike someone down for simply uttering his name. I mean think about this now. How would the knowledge of his religion even be passed on if his followers couldnt even speak or write his name? Especially to Cimmerian children. His religion would have ceased to exist centuries ago. Even the very mountain symbol depicting his faith would not exist. Moreover, he would be annihilating the rulers and lower level denizens of other Hyborian nations almost constantly; basically whenever one mocks and scorns his religion, or even speaks of him. These would in turn conflict with the very fact that he is a distant and uncaring being, and make him a god whos constant meddling would rival even that of Set.

So while it is acceptable to worship him or create displays of allegiance to him, it is dangerous to directly call upon him and ask for help. And a distinction must be drawn here. Crom worshippers create their own advantages with their own two hands using the gift he granted them. They exist, but are forged by man, not directly given by Crom himself or instilled with his godly powers.

PS- apologies for the wall of text.

I wanted to dress all my thralls in religion sets. That dream crushed.

Religion feels less important to Conan Exiles than in the novels.

YES YES YSE YES!!! this is so needed… have the alters make a “worship icon” that when carried makes certain NPC groups passive like the set city NPCs (mostly) are!

Hit or miss… Your still a exile, wether you believe in same God or not.

You look at abit more, Handful of “set” Are ether random spawns in another location, (exam black flag) or in the City, chilling.

Mitra are passive outside one small group near ruined statue (thou journal there, kinda points out he not that good)

Exile cave, is a mix… so your basiclly just a outsider exile.

Asgard, is pretty much been there abit. They really just holding there own. I don’t really think they want another mouth to feed, specailly now they have bears. XD

Darfari… thats toughie. The one Yog priest is cool about it. the rest seem be kill on sight. (thou alot of journals say they capture people and trade with some of others.

Any Immunity we gain… would be small. I’d be fine with that.

I personally miss the locals of Volcano being cool with me about.

What I dislike about Religions is that everyone can be a part of all of them at once. That makes no sense, especially when some of them theologically conflict with others. It would actually add some immersion if your religious choice, and how you behaved while a part of that religion, mattered.

I think worshipping multiple gods is in a person’s best interest. Even if they do conflict.

Should I not seek advice from a doctor about an ailment and advice from a historian about the past. Does either care about the other or even me. Only that they are sought when they expect it from us.

Quoted directly from the wiki

Crom is a grim and gloomy god, ever watching from atop his mountain in dark clouds and obscuring mists, ready to pass a disapproving judgment on any and all, but he is said to approve of courage and tenacity, even if the human is too frail to succeed. He is not so much worshipped as invoked (In Howard’s works Conan exclaims things like “Crom and his devils”), as a swearword or when trying to gather one’s courage. Not that he ever does anything, good or bad, to mortals. It is said that his sole gift to men is to bestow them at birth with “[the] power to strive and slay” - the courage to go on, survive, and vanquish adversity. He has few actual worshipers and no priests.

In the canonical stories, Conan remarks in conversation that it is best to avoid doing anything that would draw Crom’s attention, as he hands out only dooms and trouble.

Crom only directly intervenes in Conan’s life once, unasked, to save a middle-aged Conan from a dishonorable death at the hands of a malevolent magician. Crom is saving him, presumably, for a more honorable one involving overwhelming odds, heaps of mangled corpses, and rivers of blood. Conan is aware of the intervention, and afterward sheepishly makes his first sacrifice to Crom since boyhood, doing it secretively for fear of others thinking he has “gone religious in [his] dotage.”

End quote

Crom as a religion is pointless. The media based on Howard’s work take substantial liberties in regards to the source material.

Oh my [facepalm]…boy there are really some major issues with the information you have provided here. So lets get started shall we.

You really havent researched this very well. There is a reason why wiki is useless in academic circles. Because anyone can print anything on it and claim it as a fact and themselves as experts. Ocamreazor…this didnt even come from the official wikipedia site, it came from the wiki Fandom site. And as the name ‘Fandom’ suggests, it is created and edited by fans! Case in point, some of its authors listed include: hotspur23, antallan and lg16spears. It is absolutely full to the brim of personal takes, out of context facts, and speculation. It also contains numerous facts from the Expanded Universe (EU) which you have criticised in one breath, and quoted in the next. For the record here; I have nothing against EU stories. They have made some great contributions over time and are there to be enjoyed like all Conan stories. But it literally shows that you have no grasp on the ‘reliability’ of claims. For example here:

This is all paraphrasing on various other lore all mashed in together with fan based interpretation liberties, and presented from the fans perception, and in their own language. There is a reason I have never presented quotes like this before; it cannot be checked and verified as originating from a verified lore source; either Howard or EU. If you can find one, by all means provide it.

Onto this part. Part of this is all fan based narrative and interpretation. However the ‘Crom and his devils’ part. This is an incomplete quote from Robert Howards The Hour of the Dragon (1950). The full line is: “Crom and his devils, let men worship what gods they will”. Quoted by Conan to . It should be noted that he has also quoted other gods as devils interchangably. Example: “Crom, Ymir and Mitra. Gods and devils, could I but reach the fighting to die at first blow”. He also quotes “By Ymir” on occasion. He is mentioned and dicussed at length (not just as expletives) in lore stories, including Queen of the Black Coast (Howard, 1934).

However he is indeed worshipped, however ceremonies are infrequent and minimal. Example:
“Worshiped by ancient Cimmerian tribes, Crom cared little for mankind, except to allow them to continue to exist. When a boy is born, a ritual asks the gods to grant it the “power to strive and slay”. This is considered enough of a demand. Their gods are conceived as otherwise indifferent to humanity, and prayer is only to be used on rare occasions.” (Handbook of the Conan Universe Handbook #1).

Again a quoted fan interpretation, but I do agree with the sentiment. As stated above there are (listed) exceptions in my previous post to you. But by FAR his most common actions and responses care absolutely nothing at all. I can dig up the references if you wish.

Correct in the sense that he has no priests. However he is “worshipped by the bulk of the Cimmerian people and is the chief god in their pantheon”. So I wouldnt exactly call that ‘few actual worshippers’.

Innaccurate. Again…not quite. There are again instances of him both helping and smiting. I can provide you with fully referenced. [I am actually trying not to wall of text you here] However I caution it will be lengthy!

This is the most accurate piece of lore I could find on that site. I have used it previously. It is from: ‘The Return of Conan’.

Furthermore, this only lends ground to my testament that he is worshipped. Making a sacrifice to honour and thank your god is an act of worship.

You do realise that this literally supports the very point I am making to you. You have used a non-direct source abound with fan made interpretation, imbelishment and biases. They have indeed:

quote: ‘take substantial liberties in regards to the source material’ unquote.

Oh man, a religious alter giving off corruption would be wicked!

Thought you would like that. Yeah I hear you there buddy. And by the gods wouldnt it look cool too! This is what I have been trying to tell other people for the longest time now in my thread. It is possible to have more Crom features, and still have them in keeping with the lore.

This would be great in the sense that it 1) does/ gives the player absolutely nothing, and no advantage 2) actually results in harm coming to the player if they try to use it as such. Not every single feature item in the game has to be beneficial to the player. Like the spike traps in the Warmakers Sanctuary, some should be harmful.

I believe you ment to say yinz guys. Lol

It would create a brand new strategy to base building too. Having a choking point that causes corruption would force enemies to flee from it unless you wall them in! Lol I know people would spam it all across the map, and that would even make me laugh. Have it drain thralls life too, call it all a “fear of Crom” buff and that would be great!

Haha, wall the blighters in with it! I have always wanted a placeable corruption source. People probably would spam them, but they already spam other Shrines, Walls and god knows what else everywhere anyway, and will continue to do so whether this feature manifests or not. At least it would further add to the survival element of the game. Just think how valuable Cleansing Brew, Heart of a Hero and Performers would become.
