Secret World Genre Films

I used to LOVE Dark Angel! I still have the complete series on DVD, sitting right there on the shelf, next to Dead Like Me. Also right under Angel. And right above Highlander, the Series. All things with a sort of Secret World vibe. Point of fact Beaumont could show up in any given episode of Highlander without making any kind of waves…
I might have to have a DVD binge while work is slow for the next month or so.

I just went to get my copy of Highlander, Season 1

when what did I find sitting right there? The Amazing Screw On Head.

I forgot I even had this! Talk about Secret World tie-ins!
Highlander can wait.

So what your saying is, combined lan party/SWL raid/Dark Angel binge-watch weekend at your house? Is your living room big enough for all of us?

The Mist has one of the most devastating twist endings of any movie I’ve ever seen. Combine that with the fact that it was directed by Frank Darabont (he developed The Walking Dead for AMC before being ousted), has the actors who played Dale, Carol and Andrea from TWD, you have a multiple level of genre coolness.

Hmmm well if we’re going for genre related ‘twist endings’ (no spoilers) I guess we ought to add the movie “Sixth Sense” in here too then.

I can’t think of that film without remembering a lyric from a Lonely Island song.

The Hellboy films don’t have a twist ending, but they definitely fit the Secret Worldy feel.

About halfway through that third episode of ‘Residue’ I was surprised to hear a familiar voice.

“Come, share my table!”

“Sister, stop! That is not the enemy!”

“Fresh out of miracles today, i’m afraid.”

“I should have read the fine print. ‘Not to be taken with alcohol. May cause hallucinations, anxiety and mood changes.’ Any anxiety or mood changes Rada?”

-Neil Newbon.

Can’t believe I forgot to mention one of the classics, an H.P. Lovecraft tale made into movie format with fan favorite Jeffrey Combs starring in…

Don’t know if someone already mentioned it, but Robert Rodriguez " Grindhouse - Planet Terror " fits perfectly IMO.

Was expecting something of the 80’s horror variety, yet the 2016 release ensured more modern effects.
Some nice cinematography and a solid cast. Atmosphere similar to Solomon Island.

Within the first 2 minutes there is a sound effect identical to the howling of the City of the Sun God which you can hear on the first track ‘Nowhere’ of the soundtrack. Perhaps give the album a listen, next time you’re grinding your dailies.

Here’s an odd one I had run across before. Check the trailer and see how many SWL story elements you can spot:

The Greenhouse of Horrors agent Sarah Skelly, a ginger-haired FBI agent with keen investigative skill and high success rate, is perhaps modelled on agent Scully from the X-files. It is easy to forget this 90’s TV series but it was a pop culture touchstone for its time with episodes involving cases of horror/paranormal phenomena, conspiracy theories and spirituality. Also with a focus on bees and a version of the filth, the black oil virus ‘Purity’.

With the disappearance of El Dorado and the subduing of B’olon Yokte’ K’uh, ‘The Lost City of Z’ may have less relevance to SWL than the idea of the Secret World.
Nevertheless, this film follows the real events of Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett’s attempts to discover the whereabouts of an ancient lost Amazonian city. Fawcett has been proposed as the real life inspiration source for Indiana Jones.
