I had a leveled Shaleback as a follower, I took it on a resource run. It disappeared. It is no longer in my followers list. I have lost it and the resources that I had stored in its inventory.

I’ve checked the Event Log. I see any entry at around the time in question. Shaleback was killed by Unknown (2).

Having a follower pet for carrying is not a secure thing in this game, through the years we all suffered this loss. I would suggest you however to try camels both for mount and follower, both of them will give you 50 slots of carry capacity and their hp is absolutely secure to stay alive. The mount camel reaches more than 20k hp and the fighter camel more than 40k. Of course they are useless on fights, but they are surely my go to when it comes to followers “secure run”. You will find the merchant that sells the calfs east of Den for 10 gold coins each and all you have to do is put them on different pens to get what you wish. The fighter on simple animal pen and the mount on horse pen.
A little hint here not to engage on fights is to have a good following distance between you and them and their agro off.

It is more the 2000+ (2 full slots) of iron that I lost.
I am returning to the game from a long time away, I had hoped that these issues had been ironed out. I have lost many pets and followers through the years! So many named fighter thralls with high-end gear that just disappear!
Do mounts not suffer from the usual disappearing issue?
Since i started using camels i have lost zero of them. If your issue shows up on single player however i don’t think anything will change unless you delete this session and start a new one but again no security that you won’t suffer another game breaking bug.
I am aware of the bug you’re suffering, worry not. And after all these years all we have is periods with different bugs that’s coming and going. As for a pet that has 2k hp it’s some seconds life in front of a serious npc, it will die before you understand it. Camels however start running away from their predator and their huge pool of hp is giving them great security. Try them it’s only 20 gold coins in a game that a minion skeleton may drop 10 bars of gold 
.
I get it, it sucks.
Luckily iron and shalebacks are easy to acquire.

Thanks, I’ll go looking for the merchant. Yeah, lots of issues and bugs with this game through the years. I play for periods, get sick of the bugs and take a long break.
Acquiring iron is easy yes, but continually re training/leveling pets/followers is frustrating.
Agreed, not trying to minimize your experience, was just trying to consider the lighter side.
I am keenly aware of all things reported since September 2024 and experience many of the bugs myself. Some things are passable, many are not, and what is important changes for each player.
I stopped relying on followers as transport a long, long time ago. I move everything myself because I don’t want to risk one getting stuck on a rock and game getting confused so just deletes it.
I hope one day this and many other bugs get addressed for good and will keep pushing for this change. Until then most of us just do what we can. Some outright abstain from the game in protest, some deal with it, some embrace it, some organize.
If you’re playing single-player mode, just use admin temporarily to spawn in your lost iron and a replacement pet. Boost xp to max for followers via settings, activate god mode on yourself with your new pet in tow and then spawn in 50 hostile grey jungle birds. Kill them. Will take about 10 seconds for your follower to hit max level. Turn god mode and xp boost off. Done.
Yeah, sometimes laughing is the best option. I didn’t feel that you were minimising my experience, I was commiserating with a fellow veteran, that have both been exposed to the same horrors! The game is buggy, but I keep returning to it.

Although the issue is real and reported correctly, taking back what you unfairly lost is not incorrect either. The only reason i wouldn’t suggest you to try changing your settings and go in God mode is because game may crash in several ways after.
This game has standard secrets to “break” it. The most common is to grab a legendary weapon and get massive xp while slaying fast and opening every poi in the map. Several chests provide end game tools which can be repaired with the “useless” grand master weapon repair kits or nemedian hat. Change your attributes for harvesting using at least the hard worker perk. Change your attributes for fighting to stay alive on each conflict.
Getting xp and knowledge for your self is a different objective than looting, harvesting, grinding xp for followers . Separate your objectives and you’ll beat the game very easy to feel loss no more.
