Bug Description:
I was playing normally until January 13.
Now the Funcom launcher starts, but closes to the steam PLAY button without launching the game.
This makes no sense if we know the public branch has not been updated since December 14.
Checked protondb to see if anyone has the same problem.
Yes, it’s not only me.
I am running on Debian12.
I have Linux auto-updates disabled, and have not updated.
Not so sure about Steam updates.
I tried:
Steam, Verify integrity of game files:
result: All files successfully validated. But still won’t launch.
Re-installed the game: #after uninstalling it, I removed the remaining files. #before installing again I unsubscribed from all mods.
result: no changes, same problem.
Steam, tried different versions of Proton: #the version I normally use is Proton 8.0-4, and the one I’m using if no other one is mentioned. #versions tried; Experimental, 7.0-6, 6.3-8, GE.
result: won’t launch with all of them, except for Proton GE which won’t even start the funcom launcher, skipping it won’t launch neither.
Installed the game on the same hardware, but on a Windows10 drive: #copied the same “…/Conan Exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved” folder I was using on Linux. #also I enabled the mods I was using before.
result: works without any problem, anyway Windows10 its not my preferred OS and having to switch every time I want to play is not convenient in the long term.
Copied entire game folder from Windows to Linux:
result: won’t launch, same problem as before.
Just to experiment tried running the game with WINE: #copied the entire game folder to WINE drive_c. #checked software requisites for Conan to run. #executed “…/Conan Exiles/ConanSandbox/Binaries/Win64/ConanSandbox.exe”
result: it launched, but it give a “Failed to Login! Steam online services are unresponsive” error. #anyway to start with, I prefer running from Steam.
Tried running Linux updates:
result: won’t launch, same problem.
Just in case I downgraded Conan: #downloaded manifests from September 21 2023, and October 5 2023. #replaced the game files with the manifests.

! Someone remarked that there was a Steam Client updated on Jan 11th and 12th !
Looking at the notes there are several Workshop changes.
But I tried without any mods and Conan won’t launch.
Probably something else has changed.

To my knowledge only Conan Exiles has broken with this.
And this may help so the right person notice the error.

I no longer play games on my linux pc. Wine was working just fine. Now, we can install win 11 side-by-side with linux. Search for: vmx, rtx, windows subsystem, etc
My main problem is not with Conan Exiles, but with Steam client.
The game would run if I can start it without using Steam to start it, but it only do so provided I just leave Steam running and not use it in any way, as if I try to do anything on the Steam client, it stops working but do not crash.
If that happens, you can still run the game if you can start it manually, but it wont work to play on servers or with paid content.
Not sure if this is a Conan Exiles issue or a Steam issue, or communication between the game and the Steam processes.

I have been able to get the game running (without steam services) by editing the /steamapps/common/Conan Exiles/ConanSandbox/Config/Windows/WindowsSteamEngine.ini and changing true to false on the OnlineSubsystemSteam bEnabled line.
This leads me to believe its not Proton, its something on how the game steam libraries talk to the main steam processes.

Was playing great on the steam deck til the 19th for me. Vanilla local solo. I lost all my progress trying to fix it. I have been able to stream from a laptop, but I lost the ability to select things in the inventory with the A button. I saw another thread that mentioned Lutris, I was going to try that if streaming doesn’t work.
I have the same issue and I am no longer able to start the launcher. But here’s the weird part because unlike others I am experiencing this issue on windows 10.
So far I haven’t found a solution to start the game.
Actually, win10 is broke. Upgrade to win11 before installing steam. If it bombs with something about .NET 4.8, then upgrade to win11 pro. If this doesn’t work then welcome!
I doubt there will be the desired support on Wine, anymore. Some call it hacker ware. BattleEye and that sort of programs will kill it off. It can mimic a convergent flow of data. I digress.
I see nothing conclusive about Wine’s staging area. It still needs to be packaged and compressed. It carries a fix for related sources, but there is nothing polished here for the end-user to control (in this patch). I’m positive it can be further automated.
