The difference would be Conan itself and I think that’s more than enough differenece.
Well the announcement has been made… We all waiting for a Single player, RPG adventure with Conan… Funcom throws the RTS no one asked for… Hooray?
Nawww, i’m actually glad it’s an RTS, especially by Petroglyph
Petroglyph made Star Wars: Empire at War. They know RTS, and the Conan universe lends itself beautifully to RTS.
The lore is so rich, I am quite glad they are exploring the lore from a different angle. This is exciting
Considering Petroglyphs track record, especially with established franchises, this is in good hands.
I don’t know, I was kind of liking playing my own gender for once. I mean, yeah, there are a few video games out there that have a female lead (who only in recent years weren’t created as pleasant things to look at for the assumed mostly male demographic) and certainly more than there used to be, but it’s also because I like playing someone I create, in whatever semi-unique way I’ve chosen, including skin-tone, eye-color, etc… It would be nice to have something like this added on to the Conan Exiles game where your character could do whatever insane thing Conan is about to do. You can already meet him and talk to him there, so why not make it part of a quest from him. Or make him truly your Obi-Wan and after a certain point, it has to be you who finishes it. I mean, unless it is completely necessary for the story to be Conan… and I know the game is in Conan’s world before anyone points out the obvious, but that’s why his inclusion as the “been there, done that” mentor type would be kind of awesome. The best stories aren’t best told/seen from the view from those who have already been on the hero’s journey, but those just starting it.
True, Empire at War is amazing. But before even getting in RTS for the Star Wars franchise we got, FPS, Adventure games, Space simulators, 3RD person Jedi action and even platforming (before Rebellion in 95 which was the first Strategy game for Star Wars, actually is very similar to Empire at War with a little more depth in diplomacy and and other means of galaxy domination). My point is that Star Wars is more of an action/adventure franchise, so logically we first got the games that had the more obvious elements from the franchise (piloting, lightsabers, force use and shooting) before we got a strategy experiment.
In the case of Conan the hint is on the franchise name… CONAN… is a very character driven franchise and it’s allways about the same guy and his adventures. Under funcom so far we have 2 online games with chracter creation in which Conan is nothing more than a secondary character (at best) and the announcement of an RTS where we can assume Conan will be some kind of general ala Total War…
The very core of the Conan franchise has been neglected by funcom… again… this does not mean that the game won’t be good, but is far from what a Conan fan will want in the first place which is… I don’t know… PLAY AS CONAN?
This is a great point… But you have to start from the begining, and get the obvious out of the way, in a franchise named CONAN it’s a given that there will be a game where you get to play as… well… CONAN… for character creation there are tons (the elder scroll franchise, fallout, Elite, neverwinter, two world, darksouls, bloodborne, the list is infinite), but there is only 1 Gerald of Rivia, just like there’s only one fricking CONAN…
There’s a reason why the Witcher games featured the story of the main character of the book franchise instead of some random Witcher with a bland personality created by the player… the Witcher (very much like Conan) is a character driven franchise, and the character matters… like a lot… Conan as a character has been 100% neglected as a character and center of it’s own universe, everytime since Funcom got a hold of the licence… this is no difference.
It’s not that I don’t like the survival of Conan exiles, I think is a very fun game, bugs and all, or that I think that an RTS in Hyboria is a bad idea… but the very basic, must have, core game franchise in which YOU ARE CONAN… is nowhere to be seen.
Just imaginethat you only have an MMO, and RTS and a Survival of Star Wars, but no space sims, no shooters, RPGs or jedi video game… It would feel like if the very core of the franchise is missing in video game form. This is the case for Funcom Conan games… they are good (until they get an good outsource QA team, great would not be in their vocabulary), but they keep leaving the very center of the CONAN brand (Conan himself) as a foot note.
So for me, the waiting game for the Conan experience that should have existed since the very first time Funcom got the licence, continues…

Keep in mind that Conan is a King.
Either you are ruling over your army AS Conan, or as a commander under Conan’s tutelage. Whatever the case, it is an Aquilonian Army vs. the Hordes.
As far as RTS’s go though… I’m sure you can play several campaigns spanning several races, and THAT is what’s so crazy cool about RTS’s… because it takes the characteristics and personality of each race/tribe/army and gives it proper substance in a way no Conan game has done until now.
It gives the identity of each race a context.
You know night elf is night elf, orc is orc because Warcraft gave them a palpable context.
Same too will the Conan Unconquered with the various races of Hyboria.
I am dying to know what units will accompany Set. What special abilities the Darfari will have. Will they sacrifice units in the battlefield to Yog?
Will poison archers be a thing in the Stygian Army? What sort of titans will be at the various races command?
Will Stygian priests be upgradeable to shoot lightning depending on the altar tier?
Will the Herald of Xotli be able to have Xotli himself enter the battlefield?
Conan is a King - aye, eventually. But the majority of the stories (guessing here) are from before he became a king. Some of the best ones are ‘after kingship’ though, but there’s nothing stopping Funcom from doing a game set during Conan’s days as a pirate or leader of a mercenary company, or wandering adventurer for that matter
True. I don’t know if the best stories is when he is king. My favorites are the Slithering shadow, the Iron giant and Black Colossus. Funcom could do the pirate adventures, that way it would offer something extra outside of the tipical wandering you see in Skyrim or Witcher. The single player game is still on pre-production so let’s see what Funcom come up with. For now I’m not getting my hopes up… it would not surprise me if it end up being a turn based RPG or something weird and opposite to what the fans may like. Until I have more info I preffer not to think about it.
I do hope they use Exiles’ engine as a starting point, the climbing, eating, surviving aspect, and overall Skyrim like mechanics for exploring and combat would make for a great single player Conan game, so we shall see.
Fair enough. It’s some of my personal favorites, but that’s obviously just my opinion
to be fair, my other favorites include “The Tower of the Elephant”, which is (chronologically speaking) one of the earlier tales.
Witcher 3 has it all, rambling open-world and - perhaps not quite pirate adventures, but steerable boats and proto-VIkings
then again, TW3 is (deservedly) considered one of the best games if not ever then certainly in recent times, so expecting anything like that is probably setting the bar too high.
Heh, well… conceptually, perhaps, but (from the outside) the CE engine appears to be a hodgepodge that no-one really knows the inner workings of, which might be why every patch breaks something (seemingly) unrelated.
Point remains… they should first make a core franchise before going on to do B-list kind of games. I mean look at Star Wars… Empire at war is not the signature game for the franchise (although it’s a great game) the most relevant’s are KOTOR 1 & 2, Jedi Knight series, Force Unleashed, Republic Commandos and the old X-Wing - Tie Fighter Space sims… they all share the same main themes from the brand: Character driven narrative. Star Wars Racer, EAW, Old Republic and even Battlefront are side dishes…
Exiles have many elements from the stories: The sense of wonder, the survival, the exploration, the combat… but is obviously missing the main ingredients: CONAN himself and an engaging narrative full of colorfull and interesting characters from different cultures. Funcom started with MMOs and now it’s going to RTS… side dishes… the steak is still missing.
True, Witcher 3 is the pinnacle of human achivement. It’s setting the bar quite high, but seeing the work done in Exiles, and the tons of money Funcom got from it, It appears to me that they have both the resources and talent to bring a worthy contendant to the openworld/adventure/RPG ring. Plus I think the Conan atmosphere makes up for any technical misstep the game might have in comparison. I mean remember Witcher 1 & 2… 1 was pretty simple mechanic-wise but the Story, world building, narrative and characters made up for it… 2 was a mess technically speaking, the combat system was horrible, it was poorly optimized and the resting and potion system was a step backward from the first… but again, atmosphere, narrative, world and characteres made up for it.
Conan is a solid enough world (in fact my favorite fantasy world) and I think what Exiles lack in technical prowess it have in style and personality. The only thing missing for me is good questing that gives you a reason to explore other than for the sake of it, good NPCs, a great Story and being Conan. I don’t think people expect a Funcom game to be Witcher 3… but I also don’t think it has to be.
Turn based RPG’s are the best RPG’s. Please, do not attempt to talk for the fans when you are clearly only talking for yourself.
Turn based RPG’s are NOT the best RPG’s. Please, do not attempt to talk for the fans when you are clearly only talking for yourself.
Funny how that works both ways.
Either you can’t read or you have no ability to compreheand what you are reading. Never once did I attempt to talk for the fans, unlike you yourself did. I stated my personal opinion, which is that Turn Based RPG’s are the best form of RPG’s. Which is the exact oposit of what you are claiming that “the fans” think.
I’m not wasting time assuming, you clearly can’t read and the little you can is missing the ability to compreheand what you are reading. If you are not interested in an RPG like Witcher or Skyrim with Conan as the main character you cleary are in the wrong conversation, and nobody is keeping you here. Also what I’ve said is not only representative of my personal opinion, but the desire of many (as you can clearly see from some of the comments in this very thread as well as thousand of other made in twitter, steam and readdit since the game launch in Early access… again, if you can read).
If you like Turne based RPGs I think there’s a liberty here to start a thread about it. Who knows, maybe I’ll drop to talk about Action / Adventure and interrupt the conversation too.
Guys, please do not attempt to start a flamewars.

I could thank you for continuing somewhat constructively already, but I just want to give a heads-up in the case that it is too tempting not to do so.

Thanks for being the voice of reason. I’m cool. Didn’t tried to be agressive to anyone, don’t know where that response came from. I guess Oduda is also cool by now, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
