Sorcery - "new" point of view

I agree. I always played as sorc because i play video games to do things that i can’t do in real life and i can practice with swords in real life. From my point of View, since sorcerers are either persecuted like on Aquilonian society or rulers, like White hand coven rules Hyperborean society, sorcery should be dangerous to everyone, even from the user. If you fail to cast Fires of Gehenna(being hit, moving, etc), you should be hit by your own hellflames.

Here is a suggestion that i have made for necromancy and demonology on CE

Shooting lightning from your finger tips is all well in good for high fantasy… but sword and sorcery isn’t high fantasy. magic is subtle. you wont be throwing fireballs and making flashy loud sizzles and bangs.

To set the Tone:

  • High fantasy: You intone the words of power, and make arcane gesture of dexterous precision before stretching out your palm… a flame appears growing in size and incandescence before erupting from your hand and bursting forth, hurtling towards your enemies with a thunderous explosion.

  • Sword&Sorcery: You stare intently at your opponent. Your gaze piercing and yet at the same time far away as if in a trance. A low chant hums within your throat and slowly grows louder… A spark or ember flashes on your opponents clothes… Startled, he panics and swats at himself to no avail as more embers appear and grow into greedily consuming flames.

Low magic isn’t no magic. In Conan Exiles, you can summon a god’s avatar in human world. This on D&D universe will be a epic magic, while for “arcane” casters, there aren’t even low tier magic… If you look to Conan movies, Conan fight against sorcerers

And here is a “companion” using magic

So/so. In Conan, Gods are not as omnipotent as they are in settings like Forgotten Realms. In the setting itself, most gods do not even acknowledge or respond to their worshippers; and most are Actually demons taking on an appearance of a god. As is the case of Yig/Set and Yog Sothoth… as well as other Stygian gods… The priestess of Mitra mentions this in the game and worries that if her god should walk; that it may not actually be he who wills the statue to life but a darker force.

Sorceries in Conan are just that Sorceries. Each priesthood has its own tomes, and the magic isn’t granted by the god as a cleric; but through study. There is no clear distinction between magical sorcery and faith… and the actual identity of the god is Vague or Non present. The Cimmerian are almost Atheistic, as their god Crom has no interest in them at all.

It should be stated that avatars may be malevolent Demons Manifesting and posing as Gods. rather than gods themselves.

Gods aren’t omnipotent on forgotten realms. In fact, is impossible to exist two omnipotent beings at the same time. Mainly when there are a conflict between then. Can a omnipotent being undo a thing made by another omnipotent being?.. To mention a Sorcerer’s Coven on Conan universe, as i’ve posted before

The White Hand of Hyperborea
Hyperborea is ruled by the White Hand, a coven of sorcerers not unlike the Black Ring of Stygia or the Scarlet Circle of Khitai. The White Hand “Witchmen” are the priests and priestesses of Louhi as well as accomplished sorcerers. Their magic focuses around the cold of their land and control of the dead. Hyperborean sorcerers are highly prized in the northern wilds, but they are little respected in Hyborian lands.

Note “as well as”, my idea of sorcery on Conan Exiles is by using corruption to corrupt the living and create undeads or bargain with demons for arcane knowledge. Also, you shouldn’t be able to worship Mithra and do demonology Demonology & Necromancy on Conan Exiles - #15 by L0rdVictor

AO the over deity is omnipotent. and it is possible for Deities of lesser power to become over deities with much time and power (takes a multiverse of worshippers). Greater deities are omnipotent within their spheres of influence. But can be killed by the machinations of at least two greater Deities.

God in Conan are Vague and their existence is largely suspect… They are Worshipped and they have Avatars but you’re not sure if that Avatar is divine or Demonic… Demon “gods” take physical form and interact. while Gods like Crom are Silent and do not interact with his worshippers. (Cimmerian are almost atheistic and many non Cimmerians doubt Crom exists). Mitra Is allegorical And doesn’t actually exist (his religion is complicated when you get into the lore)

His avatar is either demonic in origin or its a manifestation of his saints (worshippers who attained self god hood/divinity/ascension…like I said its complicated)

Ergo Summoning an avatar is much like Summoning a powerful demon… not exactly an epic tier thing.

Two sorceries and their mysteries are not given by gods In the Sense that its a one time gift useable by that priest… but rather as tomes and scrolls whose’ knowledge is shared sparingly among the few. So their magicks should be learned by any who manage to worm their way into the higher Mysteries and knowledge of the cult/religion. (Conan is full of back stabbing priests and spies looking to gain knowledge from other cults and Sorcerous rings)

Yes, you are right. About demons, demons on Conan isn’t like the demons of Christianity. About summoning a avatar, you are right. My point is just that allow the player to bargain with “outsiders” for arcane knowledge will be a good add on. Honestly, i think that should come with a great cost, like sacrificing thralls, offering your own lifeforce or by managing to enslave a demon(this should be the hardest way)

Yes! playing as a Thulsa Doom-like character is an amazing prospect! All the methods you could implement into the very idea of using sorcery. I’d love to see some necromancy, turning thralls into skeletons, arming them and such. This could also be part of Derketo religion, if Funcom does not support the corruption idea anymore.

I am sure we can all agree at the very least that summoning an avatar isn’t subtle magic that is very powerful and easy to see. Neither is necromancy or demonology both of which lend further credence to seeing more powerful magics like combat spells similar to fireball or other things. Not all magic would be based around summoning but from using what we have so far i would say the magic is a bit far from subtle.

There are already snake arrows… If someone can use a crossbow to trow bolts, why the idea of someone trowing a fire or ice bolt is bad? The result is the same. A projectile that deals damage.

how you already mentioned religion and faith… along with sorcery, necromancy and demonology… being a priest of your religion should be a thing as well… right? Yet we have thralls for that and we are not able to really worship our gods. So with implementation of sorcery to the game Funcom would create even more irregularities.

Avatar are too big and too easy to come by. If they are going to implement sorcery, they need to rework religion system as well but this is already too much work. Not mentioning that Alchemy has its own place in Conans universe and we have no real access to it (i mean specialization) and everyone is equal in terms of knowledge of alchemy…

So if we wanna have sorcery, then we should also have alchemy and reworked religion and i dont think there are any intentions to do something like this… unfortunately…

Subtle in its execution. only the result of the magic is ever spectacular/noticeable. In high magic. the execution, and manifestation, and results are usually flashy and spectacular.

In Sword& Sorcery. it is far less so.

Fire ball has no place in sword and Sorcery, neither does adding in Ryu’s Hadouken from Streetfighter.

New High Priest of Set wearing the Serpent Ring of Set. (There can be only one “king of the hill”).
Power to summon the undead and demons.
The ring passes to the champion, etc.

Honestly Maly i disagree i feel combat magic like fireball as an example it doesn’t have to look the same but the idea of being able to forgo a blade in loo of magic should be a thing. Especially since it would require you to lose up to 50% of your health and stam to be any good at it in the first place. For such a massive loss there needs to be a gain equivalent to it and only being able to summon creatures people could run past won’t do that.

There are already a lot of irregularities and not only on this game. For example, i can be a demonologist on Age of conan and easily walk with a Succubus and a Imp pet on Tarantia and nobody gives a f***. On story is stablished that sorcerers are shunned and persecuted on Aquilonia society. In RPG games i expect that my choices as character will impact how people in different cultures see me.

Compared to this, any inconsistencies on Conan Exiles religion system are almost non existent. But i wanna see sorcery on Conan Exiles. Why? Funcom did a amazing job on AoC. No mmorpg have the same depth, mainly for necromancers. I believe that funcom can make a good sorcery system for this game who will maintain some coherence with the lore and the dangerous aspect.

This is very different than any other mp game game

That is why i suggested necromancy and demonology and suggested that you need to gain corruption to be a necromancer and fpr a demonologist, you need to bargain with demons and when you cast a “hellfire”, at beginning, you will be hurt by your own hellfire, then, after heavily specializing on demonology, will only get hurt if you are interrupted during a casting animation.

Honestly, the idea of Alchemy have is good, but i rather have a proper and dangerous sorcery.

And I say YES, let them bring up sorcery… and i will be very optimistic and expect this to be really well implemented, polished and balanced. But with dark magic as you described it we will have lot of players demanding “white magic” and/or religion/faith fueled magic. Then we can expect another group of people demanding elemental magic and last but not least, already mentioned, Alchemy for everyone who dont like sorcery and pure physical combat, but they would like to stay somewhere in the middle.

And at the end…there will be players who would like to have it all… we have this people around already today… lvl 100, more stat points, more feat points… what ever…

Oh and with incoming animal traps and special ammunition (perhaps even this month) this will get even more tricky. I already considered wow resub…(that is how bad i think it is atm)

“White magic” is one thing. For example, a character who follows Mithra be able to learn how to summon holy bolts who deal increased damage on undeads, demons, etc, purify corruption and heal will be good IMHO. About elemental magic, i an against because :

  • On Conan universe, most sorcerers are evil, including Thoth-amon ( he is probably the strongest sorcerer in Conan universe http://conan.wikia.com/wiki/Thoth-amon )
  • In order to get magical power/knowledge, you need to get it from an outsider(a good deity like Mitra or bargain with a demon), apparently there are nothing like a similar “primal cold elemental” in Conan universe(at least i don’t know any)
  • Most elemental skills will be redundant with the demonology or necromancy
  • I don’t know any elemental magician on Conan’s lore.

About “pure physical combat”, what is the difference of bolt launched by a crossbow and a fire/cold/holy bolt launched by a magician? IF you only like melee combat, a flaming sword, a vampiric blade(drain target hp) and shapeshift can be added.

PS : See this video, Conan uses a magical sword. I don’t know how Conan cartoon is compared to books…

Conan cartoons are something else and should not be used as inspiration for any real Conan based game. At least that is what i think FC is following right now.

Yes, but i think that you got my point. Magically enchant a weapon, like imbuing into a blade, the divine power of Mitra, a hellfire or corruption to suck hp from living or trow fire/holy/cold bolts working pretty similarly to crossbow bolts and having imps/skeleton soldiers dealing with the defense technically will not take need a overhaul.

TBH I don’t care about sorcery. Not one bit. (Well at least while we have game breaking bugs and crappy archery…)

But if your change would suggest more attribute points to spend. I would support it and used them for good

I still can’t see why orbs should be nerfed at all. They are awesome alternatives to grind starmetal.
Maybe on PVP but I care even less for that ■■■■
