Sprint Attacks / Dash Attacks - Feedback on PC Update

General thoughts on the patch:

  1. Many bugs that should have been fixed ASAP haven’t, but at least Shield NPCs will stop ignoring damage, something that should never have been broken and been RELEASED after…
  2. The way animals/creatures/monsters turn around while attacking doesn’t seem to have been fixed, I used to solo Feast on Flesh (Black Child of Jhil) with daggers and could consistently avoid its wind attack. Now I need to use a shield to parry it if I want to solo the boss…
  3. GOOD JOB on updating Siptah and bringing more content, although I don’t want to spoil for others but the tower feels quite lacking and disappointing at the moment.

Sprint Attacks Review (I call them Dash-Attacks): (L: Light, H: Heavy, K: Kick/Special)

  • In general, sprint attacks feel inconsistent, as the time required sprinting to use them instead of a regular attack makes it difficult to know which attack you’re gonna do if you only started sprinting recently. Turning around with your mouse doesn’t cancel the dash-attack from triggering, turning around while moving laterally (left-right movement with keyboard) will cancel the dash and result in a classic attack.
  • There is an inconsistency as how Dash-Attacks work between weapons; some will take the place of the first attack in your combo/chain, some won’t. This is a pretty important issue in my opinion, and it changes the gameplay of various weapons pretty importantly.
  1. Bare Hands! - There is only one type of sprint attack when no weapon is equipped, it’s a kick, L and H attacks don’t use the sprint mechanic.
  2. One-handed Sword - It sucks because it doesn’t take the place of the first attack, and doesn’t link to anything after. At least it is shield-cancellable (putting up shield at the end of the attack to reduce animation lag and input a new attack right after)
  3. One-handed Axe - Same issue, it sucks but can be shield-cancelled. It is also weird that these first two weapons only have one type of sprint-attack with L,H, and K clicks… Using K to put up shield while sprinting will however not result in a sprint-attack, good!
  4. One-handed Mace - Now this is actually good, I am not a fan of the mace with or without shield, but the sprint attacks link into better combos in my opinion, and they just feel good to use.
  5. Javelin, one-handed Spear - This is one of my favorite weapons, but it looks like a lot of ending lag has been added for every animation, making it near unusable without a shield, but I am used to shield-cancelling so I guess it’s ok… The L-Dash-Attack feels just right and links into the usual combo. The H-Dash-Attack looks cool but feels wrong to use because this click is made to LAUNCH THE JAVELIN, it simply doesn’t make sense that you would use the same button for an attack and a throw… Also bearing in mind that in case you think you’re going to dash-attack but you didn’t sprint for long enough you will just throw your precious legendary javelin away :’(
  6. Two-handed Sword - L and H are the same and they feel right. K is different but I wouldn’t use it over the usual K attack myself, up to preferences. Good job on this one, it links to the rest of the combo and feels fluid.
  7. Two-handed Axe - L H and K are all the same, and they don’t link into a combo, but the ending lag is pretty low. I think it’s pretty good simply because it doesn’t lag and it feels natural to use a Light attack right after.
  8. Two-handed Hammer - Now while this one doesn’t take the place of an attack in the main combo, it does link perfectly into it and I do believe it’s the best addition so far in Dash-attacks. Although I don’t like playing with the hammer…
  9. Two-handed Spear - Same as the great axe, it has low enough lag to feel right, but I feel like the spear could use a complete revamp, it just doesn’t feel good to use except to repeatedly stun the Arena Champion while you have a pet murdering her in your stead…
  10. Katana - I truly love the Katana, and I believe this sprint-attack is a rather decent addition, as it gives another heavy attack and applies Bleeding when first engaging. You however broke (my heart) the usual heavy attack… Before the patch it was possible to link the heavy attack during combos, allowing it to replace any light attack and continue the chain if needed. Now, performing the heavy attack will reset the state of the Katana so your next attack is your first one… It also seems like the multiplier on the fourth attack isn’t working anymore on the heavy (combos were L-H-L- H or L-L-L- H or L-L-H- H or even H-L-L- H and H-H-H- H ).
Now not only the only combo leading to having the heavy attack as your fourth is L-L-L- H due to the reset mechanic, but it doesn’t seem to apply the damage multiplier that made it powerful!
  11. Daggers - No. Just no. Daggers are the perfect mobility weapon, Light attacks let you dash, Heavy attacks let you apply bleeding and still move a bit, and K is a backflip which you can direct anywhere you want with your mouse! The L-Dash-Attack doesn’t link into a combo and feels awkward, I would rather have my usual Light attack trigger. The K is the same as the H-Dash-Attack but it should be a backflip instead… The H-Dash-Attack applies bleeding, but it doesn’t link into anything and feels terribly awkward, although applying a stack of bleed as an engage makes light attacks scarier with Strength lvl 2 (not to mention lvl 3)
  12. Short-sword - This one is simple and efficient, it replaces a first heavy-attack and links into the usual combos, it works well. L H and K are the same but K with a shield brings the shield up.
  13. Bow - Bow doesn’t have a sprint-attack, I almost forgot to try it since it would make no sense for it to have one, good job on not making one

TLDR: • One-handed sword and axe are a no, daggers are a no, the sprint mechanic feels rather inconsistent if you haven’t been sprinting for much time yet.
• You broke the Katana’s heavy attack, you broke the Javelin but it’s playable with a shield, and their dash-attacks work nicely otherwise.
• Two handed weapons have good to decent sprint-attacks, hammer and one-handed mace too.

Hope it’s all clear, hope dash-attacks that make no sense (daggers) or don’t link to combos (Sword1Handed / Axe1Handed) will either be removed or fixed.

I would personally remove the mechanic on the daggers since they have enough mobility and should be an exception, and fix the others so they take the place of the first attack in the usual combos.
