It’s a bug which didn’t affect gameplay, just the graphics, as you can see in this video:
Video is from a couple of weeks ago, don’t know if bug is already fixed.

Unfortunately, I was unable to recreate this fantastic look. I tried last night and this morning.
I am bummed.
I haven’t tried it again, but maybe the purge helped, it was the first time I see so many mobs and building pieces flying around.
And most my thralls had full armor, that might add extra work to the rendering and such.
