Suggestions : events, thrall skins, economic system, falconer

First of all, excuse me for the mistakes and my english level. It’s not my native language and I know that my conjugation is not always good.

I’ve been playing Conan Exiles for two months and despite its flaws (lag…), it remains an extraordinary adventure. Its mechanics are excellent. Even if it is presented as a service game, I think it lacks many features to make it attractive over time. I really like to see certain things implemented to make players stay longer or bring them back.

So here are some suggestions:

- Seasonal events : the implementation of Grave Matters is a good thing. And I encourage you to continue on this path. Without necessarily encouraging you to create a “season pass”, creating events on the map, horde modes or (why not) a special dungeon that only remains for a few days, is a good way to keep players on the game. But for that, they should also be rewarded with unique skins, cosmetics or even a simple crystal skull to place in their living room. Seasonal challenges would be nice.

- Random hazards : Even Skyrim offered random events and encounters during a journey. There are none in Conan. We know where the enemies spawn, where the bosses are and where to pass without risk. No surprise attacks, no encounters with merchants, tuaregs or looters. And the sandstorm? Why couldn’t it give birth to monsters, from time to time, like the maelstrom?

- An economic system : I was talking about merchants. Those present in the game (in Sepermeru) are useless. Not only do they sell (expensive) things that you can farm easily, but you can’t trade anything with them. This is unfortunate in a game that has an rpg-friendly setting. Impossible for my character to become a miner, tanner, merchant and specialize in trade, riding a turian elephant. I cannot sell anything in exchange for oil or ichor.

Do you realize that in Sepermeru there isn’t even a single armorer you can pay to repair your armor quickly ?

- Build, really ? I see many players talking about character building. But what build ? Close combat or archer ? dagger or axe? The character has only a few characteristics and perks. We are far from the tree of perks allowing you to specialize in a class or a profession. Why can’t i develop a profession? Bonuses related to agriculture, fishing, breeding, minerals ? Without offering a tree structure like Path of Exile, having a more specialized character would avoid this feeling of a generic avatar.

- The narration : it lacks a lot. I understand that Conan is a sandbox but what are the NPCs on the map for, honestly ? None of them just tell you a hidden dungeon, a long quest. Conan does not necessarily need multiple and boring quests like an mmo. But use NPCs, place stories and things to do.

- A shop : no, don’t yell at me ! I know players don’t like it too much and DLCs are there to provide cosmetics. But I would have nothing against a small shop offering unique skins for certain weapons or pieces of armor. And above all, I would like to be able to buy skins for the thralls. I feel like I’m surrounded by clones. I understand the need to use the same assets but Conan is not surrounded by companions with the same faces and templates. I want an old asian as a companion !

- Dungeon decorations : hey, we’re in conan! The bad guys are dark and very very bad ! If I want to scare my enemies, I can’t even craft a cage with a skeleton in it, to hang it at the entrance of my base. Where are the iron maiden and other decorative torture devices to place in my dark prison of doom ??

- Crows, eagles, trained bird : can i have a falcon please ? I want to be a falconer !

- Sound design : I like the music, I like the sound. But what is happening in Sepermeru? No crowd noise, juste silence (or a single “Humm”). It’s not very immersive, honestly.

- Finally, the loot : fighting 15 Darfari to discover a soup recipe and chests full of stones and wood, is this a joke ? Why go there, honestly? Risk taking is not rewarded and I don’t see the point of multiplying camps where you don’t even find an epic weapon (even with low durability). I know the best stuff is in the dungeons but between dull camps and quests like Aesir that only give you average armor, where’s the loot ? How can I still be interested in the game once I reach level 60 (small loot, no more perks and progression) ?

Woo, sorry, my post is big. Thanks for reading this and see you in the Unnamed City soon Exiles ! Have a great day.

Nice post.

I would like to touch upon what you said in narration. The game doesn’t tell you the story directly like many other games but has a fantastic system of its own. It’s lore is interesting and we need to go out, explore and find the bits to put it together. It’s a great puzzle to solve and I really like how they implemented it.

There are plenty of references that lead us in the direction of dungeons, loot and secrets. Explore and you will find them all, if you look in the right places.

For someone who has played only for two months you really nailed some good points. I was just wondering about random hazards before I read this and you are right, it is totally predictable. Even the sandstorm stays on one path and is easy to avoid, unless you build in its path.

The two events that I have experienced, Halloween and this last one were interesting, but the Halloween event in 2018 was too long, and killed the novelty of it. This last one was better as it lasted long enough but did not get taxing. The loot was mediocre but easy to obtain.
I am pretty sure FC is working on more events, they just need to find that happy medium, and make them worth doing.

The narrative is or was originally about survival within a harsh environment but they dumbed that down since early access. There are NPCs that give you hints about the past etc, but not really any that give quests.

Loot used to be a big thing in the Unnamed City, but since they turned the RNG up 1000%, I do not bother anymore. And the camp chests are full of junk that only a level 10 would want.

Nice post, your English is better than many native speakers.

I like everything you said, but would like to mention that NPC customization or “skins” as you call them.
Is a thing we the players have been requesting for a very long time, we have been asking for an in game item to alter their appearance such as the Orb of Nergal allows players.

While I’m not completely opposed to a real money “shop” I feel such is a slippery slope, I have trepidation regarding.

I’ve seen many games decline and fail after the introduction of this type of “shop”

These are some solid suggestions, I would like funcom to keep these types on ideas on their radar. Figure out how to best fit them in.

Also… is that kid eating a tarantula butt first?

Some nice comments and ideas - your English is fine!

These have all been mentioned before - most long before they told everyone that 3.0 would be something special and amazing. So, I’m wondering how many of these will be in 3.0 if any.

I guess we’ll find out pretty soon now…

What is interesting is all the suggestions you have made, I’m already playing with in game. But the method for having access to that is kinda looked down by a vocal minority.

Thank you, I will give it a try.

Welcome to the forums! It’s always refreshing to see new(ish) players that are enjoying the game and aren’t embroiled in the endlessly repeating discussions that some of us old farts are sick and tired of

I like several of your suggestions and would love to see them in the game:

These sound nice. Personally, I’m not really hungry for unique rewards, but rather new content, new ways of interacting with the game. But any breath of fresh air is welcome.

Hell yeah, that would be awesome.

I’ve been asking for this for so long, I’ve given up all hope

Yes to this too, please. It’s always bothered me that we can craft cages that will forever stay empty.

Not for the loot, mostly. If I go slaughter a Darfari camp, I’m either: a) looking for a particular thrall, or b) gathering some specialized resources (e.g. Powder of Corruption), or c) looking for a cheap source of “souls” for zeal.

Now for some things I didn’t like, and I hope you’ll forgive my criticism, because it’s not meant to be personal at all:

Personally, I would prefer if Conan Exiles did not get turned into an RPG. I like it as a sandbox. The problem is that, as @JJDancer said, they turned the difficulty down quite a bit. I’d like to see this game become more challenging, especially in terms of survival and unexpected dangers. I want to feel nervous about going to certain regions – but not because I’m afraid my ping will rise too high and I’ll fall into lava :stuck_out_tongue:

On the other hand, from what I’ve seen so far in Conan Exiles, the devs resort way too often to making things harder without being more interesting. For example, making bosses hit unnecessarily hard or raising their health way too high will make the fight more difficult, but not more engaging. It becomes either a chore to slog through or a task to delegate to your thrall while you ask yourself why you’re playing this game if your AI sidekick is the one having all the fun.

New Asagarth was a pretty nice example. There was a period of time when going there was just a clickfest: go in and start clicking like a maniac until everyone is dead. Then they tweaked the NPCs stats, their AI, and the combat rules in general, and it became much more fun. And then they screwed up the healing system again, so now it’s run around a spot where you know the AI will get stupid while you heal up and then start picking at them again.

Long story short, I think they need to fix the problems this game already has before even considering RPG elements. Those of us who bought this game because it promised to let us find our own destiny in a harsh world of R.E. Howard are kind of disappointed these days, and turning this into a Skyrim clone won’t help.

Again, don’t take this as a personal attack, but I think this is where your lack of playtime shows. The lore is subtle, but extremely rich. It’s deviates from the industry’s established norms of in-your-face guidance, where NPCs are practically tripping over each other to tell you exactly what to do.

The lore stones, the journals, the Awakened Staff of the Triumvirate, the NPCs with dialogue – all of these things offer plenty of hints that let you discover things to do in the game. Thing is, most of the players don’t engage with these elements, because you can get all that information either from someone in global chat or by perusing the wiki. But that’s not really the game’s fault, I would say.

I’m all for more “quests”, as long as they’re handled like the “quest” to assemble the Scourgestone. I put that word “quest” in scare quotes because this is not the kind of quest RPGs have trained us to recognize: you don’t talk to some NPC to get it added to your list of objectives, you don’t have a marker leading you to the next objective, none of that stuff. Instead, you have to discover the clues on your own, but you have guidance all the time, if you just pay attention to the dialogue and the written text.

As someone who grew up with old-style adventure games, where you had to read the text and type the commands, I find Conan Exiles extremely refreshing. In a sea of games that think I’ll grow bored if I have to explore and think independently for more than 5 minutes at a time, it’s nice to see a game that treats me as an adult

Although the first one they attempted many years ago failed due to implementation and lasting far to long the Grave Matters event was not bad and I hope they continue from that one and improve upon it.

If I recall correctly when the game first came out, at least in early access, it was implied that there WOULD be specific monsters in the sandstorms. Never did see any back then. Honestly the sandstorms are just stupid and annoying but hardly dangerous. They need a complete and total revamp and adding some new random mobs (including 1 and 3 skull bosses, maybe even purge level groups of mobs) every now and then in the sandstorms would make things FAR more interesting.

Yeah, gotta agree the in game vendors at Sepermaru are useless. Completely and utterly useless. Have never used them even once. Would be nice to have some unique items that you can only obtain via the in game coins at the main cities like Sep.

This is not an MMO or and RPG so still tree’s don’t really apply nor do classes. I think what we have now works fine the way it is.

I believe others have done a sufficient enough job on this one already.

I have seen mods that offer things like this. Can be nice if you want to play an evil character. I’m cool with more placeable objects.

Raven! Give me a Raven!!!

The crafting benches make too much noise in your base, but in Sepermaru it is, as you pointed out, oddly quite. There should be a way to bring more sounds to one side, and perhaps less to the other.

Well, the Darfari are a fairly low level group of mobs. Their loot is…low level. In all honestly, most mobs really don’t drop much worth anything except for breaking down but even then hardly worth the weight of carrying it at all. Again, this is not an MMO or and RPG, loot drops are not the same here.

I think you have hit the nail on the head personally.

So much more could be added to give CE some more depth and really by quite modest changes in the big scheme of things, I understand the PvP / combat focus etc , but no reason why the lore and other mechanics could not have been developed further.

The suggestions you listed should be listened to as constructive criticism by Funcom, if it truly wants to improve the game and develop it further. Problem is, I get a sense that they don’t really want to, at least not to the level we are talking about here, but I would love to be proved wrong.

It’s the best part i guess (the most juicy) ^^

(sorry for the quotes mistakes, it’s not very easy to use)

Yes I know that PC gamers have access to much more. Unfortunately, I play on Xbox so I have to complain on the forums to get a few pieces of these great ideas. ^^
We must remunerate the authors of mods to allow the greatest number of people to benefit from them.

We really do need to get Sony and Microsoft to allow free modding.
