The changes to sorting are awful

First, the good - it’s nice to hear you’re going to bring back the custom split ability, it’s good to see that you’ve quickly realized how bad an idea it was to remove that.

Second, the bad - the text box is so much less useful now because items are merely highlighted rather than moving to the top of the screen. This is not exactly useless, but it’s clearly inferior to the previous method of moving items to the top of the screen and making everything else invisible. It’s a pain in the neck to constantly have to scroll down the screen to find items when you’ve already typed the string into the text box. It should have been obvious to everyone from concept to development to testing that making inventory management less user friendly was a bad idea.

Third, the ugly - the new “No Sorting” option is worse than useless, it’s counter-productive, it’s an abomination compared to what we had before. Having the ability to switch between “Name”, “Heaviest” and “Custom” made the process of inventory management mostly user friendly. The new “No Sorting” option is a slap in the face.

When a player puts an item into a slot in their inventory they have every right to assume it will always be in that same slot until they make the choice to move it.

Having the ability to change to the “Heaviest” view and then back to the “Custom” view met this requirement, the new system does not. Now, if a player clicks on any other view, even by accident, their entire inventory is completely screwed up and they have to re-arrange their inventory to how they want it. Every. Single. Time.

This is insulting to your players, it’s just plain awful and should never have happened.

Inventory management should always be as smooth and player-friendly as you can possibly make it, anything that makes inventory management less player-friendly should immediately be identified as a bad idea.

This.

Why? Why, oh, why?

They need to revert the inventory management function changes including the UI. Put it ALL back the way it was and leave it alone.

I’m not so sure I agree with “leave it alone”. For example, I could see there being a “No Sort” option in shared containers that shows the exact order that items are stored in the game’s DB. This would allow everyone in the tribe to have a view that they all know they can use to see the “default” sort order. But of course changing from “No Sort” to “Heaviest” and back to “No Sort” should restore the original order that “No Sort” was displaying.

It’s pretty reasonable to have a default option that looks identical to everyone for shared storage, but I agree that there’s no need to change anything inside of the player’s inventory.

Yeah, I hear you. Honestly I’m just trying to get the point across that they need to take a little while to stop and re-evaluate. Best plan right now is to roll it back then have a week long sit down and really reconsider what they’ve been doing. I don’t really mean leave it alone forever and never add any GOOD features, bug fixes, etc. to the game but they do need to stop messing with things that don’t need to be changed and they really ought to think about what they’re actually doing to this game. It’s so bad that I don’t want to play it anymore and coming from someone with over 1200 hours that should mean something to them.

I really think part of the problem is that the devs. get over excited about the content and changes they come up with and don’t look at them critically enough or from an actual player’s point of view. If they had done that with this update then we wouldn’t have so many people speaking out about how bad it is.

I want the option to display items as I want, I have gotten used to food at the top potions in certain places on the right now I have to stop to sort them out instead of just instincttivly where I place them, BRING BACK THE FREEDOM WE had in placing them!

Edit: Since I wrote that I have also suffered the inability to eat food in the inventoy and inability to unpack chest from bererrs, WHY?
If I have food in my tool bar it gets eaten when not hungry wasting food, the unpacking problem I might get used to eventually but we do still have to find the items unpacked and sorted no matter what. It might be better if they unpacked into the chest they are placed in and only in our inventory when the chest isn’t big enough.

Ty for the welcome back Macdallan, I have been around only the way the game is now has all but driven me away.

Welcome back to the forums. Thank you for taking the time to come back and tell Funcom how this update has affected you. More people need to do this. If we all speak up maybe they’ll actually listen.

I know exactly what you mean. I’m VERY particular about where I keep items in my backpack, and where I have items placed in most of my storage containers. I keep things quite organized and this update has been absolutely brutal for that. I have no idea why they didn’t leave the sorting alone, or at least set the default to be no sorting so it wouldn’t screw up hundreds or even thousands of item stacks and containers for tens of thousands of players.

If I’ve learned one thing about the dev. team in the past few days it’s that they do NOT understand how we play the game. They think we want this kind of backwards sorting system, that we don’t need precise stack splitting… they’re out of touch and we need to speak out so they know that they’re making a huge mistake with the most recent update. They need to understand that a few band-aid fixes aren’t going to be enough, they must roll back the entire update. That’s the best solution and it is the only real solution.

I have somewhere around 7000 hours and I feel the same, this is not the game I joined. Many changes have improved it, I love the more free fighting now and the ectended wheapons but a hell of a lot of their so called improvment and changes have spoilt it.

I wonder what the Neebs think of the changes?

It’s becoming clearer that there is some logic behind this (not excusing the UI and sorting changes - I hate them - but there is a path that makes some sense) - As a few people have tried to explain (often in somewhat unhelpful ways, as they come across as denying that things have happened), the old sorting systems didn’t actually change the order of items in the ‘list’ (server side), they just gave us the appearance of changing the layout (client side). The new system has apparently changed this at the underlying level and now sorting options actually sort the contents, rather than just changing what we see. So it’s not so much that they actively removed options, as it is that they failed to add new versions of these old options in (because they didn’t view them as important…). I don’t know why they felt the need to change the underlying systems - but there may be some future intended benefit whereby doing it this way allows for greeater future flexibility. The problem was that they didn’t include new versions of important older sorting methods.

Certainly seems to be the case. However, it’s worth noting that the greatest benefit is likely to come from calmly explaining how we do play the game - simply telling them they are wrong, but not explaining why, is less likely to convince them.

That may be desirable (at least for some), but it’s simply not going to happen. Partly, it has already been too long - a rollback in the first couple of hours (or maybe the first day) might be feasible - but the outrage they would face for a rollback after even just a few days would dwarf the numbers calling for it in the first place - people really hate losing progress and items they’ve paid for. And this is especially true when they can be (and are) re-coding the UI sorting features for the hotfix, so that they can return the lost features without having to p**s off a whole additional bunch of players by removing their progress (and paid items).

But beyond all the arguments, there’s just the simple fact that Funcom doesn’t roll things back. In the simplest of terms - Machete don’t text and Funcom don’t rollback.

… but it COULD. They could bite the proverbial bullet and do it - and they SHOULD.

Too bad. I hate losing a UI I liked and functions I used all the time. I hate losing attributes that made sense. I hate losing a game that had no predatory marketing, no FOMO, no battle pass, no cash shop, no asinine “Crom coins.” I hate losing the ability to mine crystal with a pick. I hate every single thing about this update. I hate not being able to enjoy the game I bought. So… while some folks might get a little unhappy about losing something that they can be compensated for, I’m upset about losing things that I can’t be compensated for including the entire game. Which is worse?

For the second time they could, and they should. They can fix it right now. Would take minutes for them to do it, then they could re-implement the handful of good things and move forward properly. Problem solved. No need to be too proud or too stubborn to admit they messed up because we all know they messed up. It’s a dumpster fire update. Put the fire out, roll it back, fix the problem.
