There was, in March. This isn’t a recent change, just further removal of UI that is no longer necessary.
I’m not sure you understand how a software patch and patch notes work. The patch notes are supposed to outline the changes in versions. Dropping a stack of food on a pet or thrall and having it instantly vanish is not something that was outlined in the 1.4 patch notes. That behavior didn’t exist in 1.39. It goes beyond UI changes.
How it currently works:
I put any amount of food stacks in Thrall inventory and it immediately dissapears. No obvious affect or UI indicator of a buff, timer on buff, effect of quality/amount of food on buff. Or for that matter what this ‘buff’ does.
How it should work:
Food is placed in inventory and 1 unit from stack is consumed, adding time to buff proportionate to quality of food consumed, up to 1 hour max.
After buff expires, another unit of food is consumed . Visual indicator on Thrall character sheet of active buff and exact (numerical) or approximate (bar fullness, like PC food/water indicator) buff time remaining.
Thrall food Pot should confer buff to all nearby Thralls. Pot could show buff times remaining.
Just turning Thrall/Pet inventories into food black holes with no visual cue of what the food is doing just doesnt cut it.
Ah thanks. That still sucks though. First they gave me the big middle finger when I asked about the land claim radius slider so I wouldnt lose all my work I did on a city due to pressing square in the settings menu to try and make the right thumbstick sensitivity not as high and having my land claim radius change to be like 10 to 15 foundations away instead of the .25 I had it set to originally and then smile in my face and tell me just to “restart” my server from scratch after 100s of hrs of building and resource gathering and now they’re taking away even more sliders. I feel like this game should make me forget about all the problems Ark had, not make me reminisce about all the things Ark did right. It shouldn’t be a daunting task to be a better company than Wildcard. They sucked so bad they had to change their name to Grapeshot games just to sell Atlus.
You should’ve left it as an OPTION so that we could decide to use it or not.
Now everybody is going to have armies of thralls 1000 strong and they don’t have to actually supply and manage them? Definitely not good at all…
I run a RP/Realism Server for the PS4 version of this game and it literally caused over 3/4 of the players to withdraw and state they are no longer interested because a huge aspect of realism and having to actually take care of your armies was no longer needed.
In other words because we lost the hunger as an option, the thrall care aspect of the game got to simplified and people lost interest.
PLEASE FIX THIS AND TURN THRALL HUNGER BACK ON AS AN OPTION FOR US WHO WANT TO USE IT.
It is intended behavior. Any food placed in thralls inventories is converted into a 1h damage buff.
We’re considering adding a warning when putting any food in a thrall or pet inventory informing/warning about this.
You should’ve left it as an OPTION so that we could decide to use it or not.

Steps on how to reproduce issue:
Singleplayer or Online play
Check on your thralls
Notice that all of the effort you placed into thrall maintenance (i.e. food) was deleted
Check emails from 27 members of your server all stating they don’t like how the thrall hunger was turned off, is no longer even there as an option, and will play other games until it gets fixed ×_×
So does that mean that a full stack of , for example 100 steaks is being converted into 100 hours worth of buff ? It sure does not seems to be the case, yet it disappears all at once.
It was patch 1.39 that removed the actual system, the last patch removed the UI and other stuff that was lingering like animations and sounds of hunger.
there were multiple threads about it, but i easy to miss with all the traffic on here.
I know it wasn’t listed, but there have been threads and other areas that have discussed this. I was just trying to convey what i have read to help answer.
Correction on the decay. Live Stream states they now need to be refreshed like anything else (instead of just logging in in general), so you have to visit the area for a couple of minutes. Haven’t tested.
Okay so the only problem im seeing right now, is that they insta-consume. Its not “oh I’m gonna eat this fish and be strong for an hour.” It’s “I’m going to eat anything and continue to reset my timer.”
Easy fix is only allow then to eat another piece maybe after 15 minutes out of the hour has passed.
I hope this gets reconsidered as a game mechanic… it’s quite a poor idea.
The worst problem however is that one cannot store food in the pet while travelling to disperse weight.
Also, several times I have been left with no food as I have clicked on the wrong item in my inventory to transfer to my pet (also due to lag/latency/ freezing that has been increased since patch, but that’s another issue) and when the food was transferred it instantly disappeared and now I am left with no food that was being carried as prep for dungeon / exploring whatever far from home.
Keep up the mostly good work - loving the game and dev attention to it and the patches - but this was a serious miscalculation I hope is corrected.
The Pet and Thrall Hunger System has indeed been adjusted since March. There were parts being adjusted and removed in little batches and gradually, after the decision to replace the initial system with the new one. How it was communicated in the patch notes was not ideal and we apologize for that.
Here is how it currently works:
The Hunger System (the need to constantly feed thralls and pets) has been removed. Because it wasn’t really what we had envisioned and while some players liked the system, many more perceived it as an unnecessary grind.
This is the reason we decided to remove it and replace it with a system that essentially works like the building decay system. Your thralls and pets get placed on a timer from where you place them and you can reset that timer by being in the game and close to the trall/pet in question. If you let the timer run out, they will die and disappear.
They will still take food to gain buffs but as you noticed they will immediately eat all food, no matter how much you give them. The pet/thrall will then gain the buff and should display an icon when the buff is active. The reason all the food you give them disappears is because the feeding areas or their inventories linked to feeding them are not supposed to be used as additional inventory.
We’re looking to get the feedback on this system more clear and possibly some additional cues on timers.
