I respect your point but I disagree. I’m hoping that Siptah does not become a carbon copy of Exiled Lands.
Why not encourage Funcom to flex their creative bones and think of a new way to fast travel that suits the context and culture of Siptah??
In another post, I suggested a system of fast travel by learning a new feat, something like “Rickety Boat”, which when built, enables fast travel to certain points around the circumference of the island. This enables the player to get from one side of the island to another if needed. Perhaps even a fast travel point up a river too?
Sure I am absolutely open to the possibilities of a new fast travel system. While I personally liked the Maprooms for the Exiled Lands, it did come with some limitations. For example, the fact that they were in fixed locations, and indestructible, meant that they were easy to monopolise. Furthermore, they were also tied to the lore behind the GiantKings, and their transportation of resources and the enslavement of humans. In addition to this. This presents an opportunity for a new system, and leaves the door open a concept build around Siptahs own lore.
Now lets discuss some possibilitiea. To be honest I do like the Waystones mod concept. It means that the waystones must be crafted, and allows players the freedom to choose where they place them. In addition their portability destructibility adds a whole new layer of strategy to PvP, and more convenience to PvE.
Some other ideas have been to have a transportation device of sorts, but one that teleports the player to a random location within that biome, meaning it becomes near somewhere between very difficult and impossible to block the players spawn point. Yet another was an idea to use the Leyshrines as a teleportation system. But I would love to hear some more ideas.
I guess i tire of the speed speed speed speed aspect. Siptah is a beautiful map. To add skipping around means all that dev time making it beautiful is a waste. Again, Siptah is well balanced as far as 90% of most used resources. Traveling is a core lore specific mechanic that is eliminated entirely with fast travel.
even the most PVE players are competing with each other. Mainly for claim area. Even if one wanted to not use fastvtravel to enjoy the journeys, they would lose in that aspect. See any official to see the passive competitive land claim that goes on. You are almost required to fast travel to insure you can build in an are what you want to build, or someone may block your idea, even accidentally.
I think you kinda opened that door by saying, don’t use fast travel if you don’t like it
On a more serious note, I think fast travel will come in some sort of way, the devs have already said it
some of us have been playing this game from the beginning of early access in early 2017, and while the map was smaller back then, it still grew a few times, but for me personally it never felt too big or too time consuming to travel from A to B.
Back then there was also a lot of resistance when they announced that they would add fast travel in the form of travel from map rooms to obelisks, some said that the map in Conan was too small for fast travel while others said it would take away from the experience of actually travelling…
I was kinda curious on the fast travfel thing, but I also feared that the map might feel small and that I might lose the sense of adventure while travelling!
In the beginning it felt good to be able to do lots of things very fast in different parts of the map within a couple of hours, no more need to make a temporary shelter if things dragged out or I had to log off, but I also felt sad that I lost the sense of being on an adventure + after the map rooms became a thing, the exploration parties we had when we went exploring in a small or big group kinda went down the drain…
I felt sad because more than often it became “Let’s meet at Obelisk in location X because that’s where we want to have fun”
So even if I liked the journey of getting to where you wanted to go, map rooms just made people lazy and if some stuck to travelling there by foot, it almost always ended up being a cancelled group trip or those that wanted the immersion by actually travelling was kinda forced into using map rooms if the group journey should be a thing.
I have a feeling that map rooms only became a thing because Funcom struggled with the promised mounts and they kinda knew that it wouldn’t be ready for full release
Back to Siptah since this is what we are talking about, from beginning of early access Siptah brought me back to what Exiled Lands was for a very long time, and no I am not talking about bugs and lack of features, it brought back the sense of adventure because you couldn’t just teleport to all corners of the island, so again I hear people/friends saying let’s go somewhere and do something there
Yes we now have horses and we also in a way have some sort of fast travel…
We can use battlestandards to teleport to a bed, bedroll or any of the 4 starter locations, off course we cannot bring horses and thralls, but it is possible and is used a lot, we still get the feeling of actually travelling since people mostly want to bring a thrall and/or their horse
I agree with those that say no to fast travel, but I am also realistic, it is different times now, people have less patience or time to play, and the devs have said we will be getting some sort of fast travel in a future update for Siptah, I just hope it won’t be like Exiled Lands with map rooms or worse…
The idea may already be there, lots of people use battlestandards to quickly move stuff between bases, maybe expand a little on that “feature” or some kind of portal, perhaps it being a personal portal meaning only you can use it and only within a certain time after setting it up, something like the potions with a timer on them, but it should cost something, so that it won’t get overused and we see people constantly teleporting all over the place…
That was my 2-cent on fast travel for Siptah
EDIT:
I don’t know how big Siptah is compared to Exiled Lands, but I’ve added a couple of links below from their launch, Exiled Lands is supposed to be 40 Km2 and if I remember it correctly they said that Siptah at full release is roughly 90% of Exiled Lands map size
Sadly they weren’t as thorough in giving out comparison between the 2 maps or even between early access and full release of Siptah, but you can check them out, especially the original release of Conan Exiles contains detailed map and information on what happened during the early access
I too feel the journey lore part of Conan has been stripped away due to intake access to everywhere on CE. And for PVP raid it 100% removed the area control aspect, and for Conan himself, regional control is part of the great journeys he goes on. Freeing and fighting against the many armies to free those lands of “evil”, or even conquer them.
It’s quite time consuming to travel from the SW corner to the NE even on horse. Especially if you’re farming the judge or perhaps relocating base (which is over 15 trips for me) while overencumbered without a ride; slogging along for literal hours with poor stamina regen and a long trail of Rocknoses loping behind.
I’d rather continually wash the dishes at this point.
But of course I didn’t map the landscape professionally, just wacked down a few dots for a rough idea.
Halk’s suggestion at the very least sounds alright too - cancelling around half the map length in travel(unless you’re in the new area in the south) I’d prefer 3 though.
It might also help curb those players linking their many bases and wheels with literally thousands of pillars to consolidate their decay timers as well.
To avoid issues of placing an “Obelisk” or Wayshrine, etc at a place someone has built on a server, perhaps the best locations would be:
Camp of Castaways and the 4 starting points on the map. I believe you can’t build any of those locations and they allow you to travel to different points of the map rather quickly. I would have added the 3 broken wayshrines but they were invaded recently…
This way, give players more options while not shrinking the map where everything is super accessible by a port.
