Crud like this is why Im playing offline/co-op or private servers more and more. Official is just a mess.

Yeah this mess I think is what can dynamically create for some very interesting situationsā¦ at the same time, it can be a pain. Whichever way the result, those that ended up investing time regardless should get to have a say on such matters with regards to their server.
And its not like (as some people pointed out) wiping a server wont mean that people next day will be newcomers again. So its rather pointless.
There are some really nice advantages to private servers. Any idea how much it can go? Im actually half a mind of looking into it.
