Where does everyone play and why?

PS4 singleplayer (offline obviously).
I do not have a fast web connection and basically I do not like playing with people:
playing a videogame is like reading a book to me: I do not want anyone peeking on my shoulders while I read
I tweaked a lil’ of harvesting (x2) and improved vanilla’s speed in thrall’s making by 50%.
Mod?
I can’t test 'em.
Would I like some mod?
I still playing Fallout 4 thanks to the modders (even if on PS4 there are many restrictions), probably
I’d love to choose some mod (mainly aesthetic) for the vanilla game but… no chance, so go on my way!

Sorry but judging from your post, it seems like you were taking a stance as if that type of mod shouldn’t exist then another person called the mod trash so had to come in to defend it. Also don’t be so quick to judge that it is my favorite mod :stuck_out_tongue:

My feedback as someone who plays on PC:

  • I use singleplayer for my tests.
  • I have my own PvE private server for myself and friends with a mod selection of my choice. Harvest rates are x2 with a few QoL mods such as Fashionist. I play here when I want the vanilla experience.
  • I play other private servers when I want to meet new people. I am no longer attached to my everything since I have my own server for that and most private servers are boosted anyway. I don’t care if they last long or not. If I don’t like something, I can always leave and find another. Currently playing one with AoC.

I started on officials on a PvE-C server. I would recommend officials for any new player who wants to learn the game for what it is meant to be by the developers. You will like some aspects, you will dislike others but this experience helps you decide whether the way official servers are played is something you enjoy or not. It helps you appreciate all the QoL mods out there as well.

As I consider myself an experienced player by now, I would never go back to playing officials. Why? Many people play them as if they play singleplayer with no consideration for anyone but themselves. Official servers have performance issues, griefers and are littered with structures which ruin the landscape not to mention affect the performace negatively. Sometimes you lose progress due to bugs, happens but you feel helpless and it spoils your day. I play games for fun, this is all it comes down to after all.

Most admins I have met care about their servers. There may be some bad apples out there but most of the admins I know start a server because they have a vision. You just need to find the one with a vision similar to yours and adjust your expectations.

Pure PvP (with raiding) is not for me. Never found the appeal in trying to destroy the effort of another for the sake of winning over them. There is no territory to control, no other perks to raid besides wiping and looting someone.

Nah, I just simply hate it.

I also hate eating corn, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist

Well there’s certainly no need to call out specific mods or call them “trash”. It’s perfectly fine to dislike them, but the only sane reaction is “meh, not for me” and leave it at that. I mean I’d probably not play with Age of Calamitous either, but that’s just because its author (and audience) want to play the game differently from me, and more power to 'em for doing just that.

Mod authors spend huge amounts of their spare time making things, and usually they get very little in return (not talking money, that’s almost always a big fat zero) but even recognition or thanks can be hard to find. And sure, there are a lot of mods that make me shake my head and wonder why the hell someone would want to put that in their game, but the fact is, the worst thing a mod can do is nothing, since you can just ignore its existence entirely.

Much :love_letter: for mod authors in general!

If you don’t mind my curiosity, what do you mean by “keeping up with the server crowd”? I’m not looking to argue, I’m just intrigued

No, not only. The majority of servers (at least für PCs) are private servers.

Official server ALL (PvP, PVE, PvE-C): 380
Private server EU (with mods): ca. 2500
Private server EU (without mods): ca. 1500

The question is, how much player from the modded server community would still play (and pay for new DLC’s) if there where no possibility to mod.

Why wouldn’t they? Dlc content has always been locked and it is fair. There are plenty of mods which modify vanilla assets but if you want to have the DLC designs you need to pay and many of us are happy to do so because this is what keeps the game development alive. In addition, mods come and go while you will always have access to your DLC no matter where you play and whether or not a specific mod is still supported or not. I even prefer building with DLCs because I know they won’t vanish or lose stability with the next update.

I agree with your sentiment that Conan should be Conan. The good thing about mods is, you can choose which ones to use. I choose to use only those that support my idea of how the game and the setting should work - so I have a “more body hair” mod and a “modify how my thralls look” mod and a “better-looking dances for entertainers” mod. Nothing with pointy ears, or D&D-style magic, or flying dragon mounts.

As to the actual topic: I play Single-Player mode because there I can play the way I want, with the mods I want, without other players. In solo mode I can play whenever I want because I can choose to turn Decay off, so if I take a four-week break I don’t have to return to a deserted world. I can build wherever I feel like and not worry that I’d be blocking resources from someone else or otherwise ruin their enjoyment. I can tell the Purge to stuff it if I don’t feel like fighting them. I can make the game easier or harder according to the challenge level I desire.

I’ve had my share of online multiplayer experiences. I don’t really miss that.

You get to choose whats on the server if you are the admin is my understanding, so while yes, you dont have to install them, players start pestering for them. I like being able to say “aw shucks! We cant have mods! Sorry guys…”

I play Xbox so mods don’t really matter … interesting to read a lot play single player or private… And I understand everyone likes to play the game differently…

I don’t think I will ever leave officials tho :upside_down_face: and you don’t need to be on 24/7 or get wiped daily… play smart … yeh there are the odd trolls and same few that exploit but half the fun is not letting them win.
Maybe because I have played for a long time but sometimes the best fun is going back to a server you have a level 60 character on and starting again from scratch

Private PVE… Suppose one can even add RP to that. Private RP PVE.
I’ve never been a PVP person, I’m usually too slow when it comes to handling another player and even if it wasn’t for fighting players outright, I’m not keen on having my stuff demolished whenever raid times are up.

And I’ve always enjoyed a good amount of roleplay in my games too. Always nice to set up a character and playing it as you “feel” he/she would act and such. Which is mainly where the fun is after finishing a castle, or village, build for me. Spontaneous RP dungeon runs, for instance, can be really fun, if the people you run it with also want to actually rp.

I didn’t mean that DLC content should modably. I meant that people wouldn’t play (any longer) CE if there where not the possibility to mod at all. And if they stop playing they will also stop buying DLC’s.

But I don’t want do hijack this thread

Where do I play:
I’m playing on a rented private Server.

Why:
Because of my experience while Early Access with toxic and idiotic players.

I wouldn’t play any longer if there wasn’t the ability to create my own game experience and this includes mods like additional building styles an building extensions (Stygian, Exile Architect, Fence Gates, Limestone Buildings), armors and weapons, and QoL mods (Better Thralls, Pickup+, Strays Mods).

Sorry, misunderstood your msg then. Yeah, about that … I can see myself playing on a non-modded private server if I have no choice but if I do have, at this point and as someone having a server, some of the mods are must have for me. On the other hand, I wouldn’t join a server running too many mods. I mostly play lightly modded servers but I don’t mind trying new mods which add content e.g. AoC.

Having said all that, I also can’t understand people hating on something without having even tried it.

Ive tried mods. Will not again.

Aha. Any chance to get more information?
Which kind of mod and why?
Because there is a wide range of mods:

this is not about mods and this mod trash talk is very disturbing. you could think someone is forcing you to use mods. to denigrate the work of modders like this and to talk trash is shameful and i expected more from the conan exiles community

back to topic

if I play than only pve on private servers. modded and un-modden with slightly higher ratings. base game grinding is a bit to heavy for my spare ingame time.

I play official PvE. Official because I thougt it was safier then a private, that I would never loose my progress or my itens, but FC showed me I was not right. PvE because I don’t like to fight (not in the game, I don’t like fight in general. ALL the dirty job is done by thralls). I would love all of us just being friends and helping each other in the exile lands… Ok, call me crazy. Building a castle is only the beginning. Then I build smaller bases arround the map with open map rooms, dancers and water. I like the dangeous and to explore the full map, tame named thralls, build all set of armors, weapons, legendary itens, etc. And when I think I have too many things, I just keep calm and wait for ■■■■■■ wipe my server again, like they did last month… and start again.

Have I trash talked them? I said I dont use them and stated the reason but never that mods are in general “trash” or anything of the kind. My issue is one of going thru proper quality control and the devs getting a royalty for their use.

I don’t think anyone was responding directly to you. I think that they were responding directly to this which is above:

To which I strongly agree with the response. There is no need to call anything trash. If you don’t like mods or whatever, the reasonable thing to do is not use it and move on. Denigrating someone’s efforts in such a way is poor taste in my opinion.
