Would there be any possibility that in the future you’d include the ability to save character progress, buildings, etc. to the cloud or somehow? I’ve lost everything several times, either due to a server error or because the server shut down, and starting over is very unpleasant.

I’m afraid that won’t happen again. There was an option to transfer characters between different official servers in past. Unfortunately, this option is no longer available.
If you want to develop a Conan Exiles character on long-term with calm, you might want to consider a solo save, your own server, or playing on an official PvE or PvE-C server. The last option requires that you’re willing to compromise with other players, as some very popular building spots are claimed, especially on pure official PvE servers.
And don’t forget to set a weekly alarm on your smartphone if you start playing on an official server. 
After ten days of absence being online, your entire base will decay.
