I have only recently started playing Conan Exiles at my brothers insistence and after a terrific time playing Windrose. I made a base ran a purge to make sure it was in a good spot (his advice as I didn’t know why at the time). Purge worked fine and was a very cool mechanic. I then developed my base further only to discover that defenses are mechanic breaking for the purge system. However, now even if I put the coffer outside in the yard I get the “There is no reachable location for the purge to setup their base camp” message. This happens even if I leave my base area and stand in the middle of a field far away from all my defenses. I Googled this message only to discover that people have been complaining about this mechanic for years and as recently as 6 months ago. How has what seems like one of the most important features not been fixed in so long??? Again, I am new to this game so am I missing something about this?

Hello, and welcome. Yes, the game is special, it made you create a forum user out of frustration, people that are not hooked would just quit the game and maybe refund if possible. Purge system is finnicky, even a wrongly placed bed will mess it up, thralls, doors everything can break it. The best chance for a normal purge experience would be to build it in another area separate from your main base, that usually worked for me in the past, and currently I have the same setup.
Yeah the game has been amazing to this point like I really really enjoyed the game play loop. Thanks so much for the feedback. I even took the time to leave a good review on steam, but the purge was one of the things that was most interesting to me. Building our clans base to withstand the onslaught of a raiding horde was a very cool concept. I wont lie and say it is not disappointing and disheartening to read that one of the mechanics I thought was the most rewarding is all but completely broken always has been and likely always will be as it doesn’t appear to be getting reworked or fixed.
Hopefully they add a button to turn OFF or ON
THE OLD PURGE
It was a meter that filled up as you progressed in the world.
And the game would send people or creatures to 1 of your many bases to attack.
Special feature was
Each biome had different things that would spawn to kill you.
You could also get ACCURSED T4 Thralls from it.
People would be so scared to log in cuz the meter was almost full.

Unfortunately it would require more than just adding a button. As it was explained to me, the code itself was removed. This is why Xevyr had to rebuild the ssytem from the ground up for his mod that reintroduces a version of the old purge. And it’s been gone long enough that the entire UE5 version was probably built without ever having it incorporated at any stage.
Doesn’t mean it would definitely be impossible, but does mean it would take a lot more than just adding a button.

Ok great - so they ‘add a button’ - it doesn’t link to anything or do anything, but they can add a button. Will that make you feel better?
The old purge system had it’s problems also. If I remember correctly if your base was unreachable for the purge, enemies would spawn directly into the base. Even if the purge bar was full, I think it could take a lot of time for the purge message to appear. On private/official servers besides the normal lag, and yet again if I remember this correctly, if the purge bar was full, there was no guarantee that you were the one being purged.
Depending on how experienced or new you were to the game, the purge bar was either an annoyance or a fear, and because of that a lot of people were playing with the purge disabled.
Sometimes even when it was perfectly reachable, lol. I still remember my first purge - I was outside the front of my base, with a bunch of defenders all ready to defend; the purge started, attackers started walking towards the base, then a bunch of them vanished in front of me, I heard a load of noise behind and found they’d somehow teleported past us into the middle of the base and were wrecking my crafting room ![]()
The old purge was fun, but buggy as hell, and that made it very not-fun.
Some anecdotes:
- A full purge of volcano thralls once spawned inside my perfectly legit castle base. They totally wrecked all boxes with my stored resources. Imagine that when the current systems fails to find a path to your coffer, your base gets deleted. That’s how annoying the old purge was.
- I did a lot - A LOT - of old purges. I’ve built bases all around the map to farm the various purge thralls. That was my endgame for… well, years, I have to admit. In almost all purges, mobs spawned inside the mesh. The purge could only be completed using the admin panel.
- The spawning mechanic was stupid as hell. I once had a purge spawn more or less okayish, but then a dragon appeared on my base’s roof for no apparent reason. It couldn’t fight from there and iirc just stood there mindlessly. That’s how un-immersive the old purge was.
- The region-based spawn lists were a nice idea and gave a reason to seek out specific locations on the map, buuuuuut most of the map could spawn the dreaded Rockslide purge. As Rockslide is able to smash scores of thralls and buildings within seconds, that made most of the map inhospitable imho.
Yes, yes, there will now somebody feel the urge to say that only noobs are afraid of Rockslide and there’s some super secret sauce (“skill”) to beat it, buuuuuuut… Oh, no but. Just go eat a rock.
Xevyr’s and Tephra’s purge system seems to avoid most of these problems. I had the very occasional spawn within the mesh, but that was it. So, if Funcom/Inflexion bought his mod or copied the idea, we might have the best of both worlds. Except for that stupid Rockslide thing, please. Or just finally fix that boss, i. e. add the missing cooldown to his sweep combo.
This is really a sad story.
I loved the old purge system. Yes, it was buggy, but when it worked, it really made the map feel dangerous and immersive. It gave base building a purpose. The new purge system is just a boring, loot mechanic. Why bother building a defensible base when all you have to do is build a defensible “purge” base somewhere else and gather the free loot without any real risk to your “main” base?
I liked everything about the old purge system except the bar at the bottom of the screen that let players know how much time before a surprise attack would show up. I would much have preferred no such information. The purge should be a surprise (like the notification that your base is being scouted … meaning an attack was coming in minutes – but no other warning besides that).

Wow this sounds incredible. I really regret that I was trapped in the WoW bubble for so long and missed so many great games like this one. I mean I am seeing a ton of things that are now unavailable or broken simply because I was not playing at the time like achievements and of course things attached to the BP system they got rid of before I ever found the game.
The old purge system was mostly a mess for all the reasons given above, but the most important reason it was inferior to the current purge system, is that there could only be one active purge at a time!
e.g. you have 5 clans and 5 solo’s all with full purge bars, all waiting to be purged, one of them gets randomly chosen and invariably one mob gets stuck inside a rock or a mountain. The mob can’t be found/killed, so the entire purge system stalls until purge hours are over and server reset.
It used to be a nightmare!

You know Dan, what would make players feel better is if the systems they as in funcom added worked longer then to the next patch that breaks it or some never work, you know this to be true, you been here forever as long as I have, tell me when was the last time you saw a patch that did not break something, or to be honest lots of something. I will tell you when the last patch did not break something was NEVER. Your condescending comments to not negate that patches are always broken in some way, add new bugs or just break something that did work before patch. Can you list even one patch that came out with no new bugs?

I was responding to a post saying nothing more than ‘Add the button’, which was itself in response to me explaining what I had explained to me about why adding the old purge back would not be as simple as ‘adding a button’, after they had called for the old purge to be restored by ‘adding a button’.
I am not the one making condescending comments. I also haven’t claimed anywhere that this patch or any other did not introduce bugs.
You are angry about this patch - we can see that by the way you have written multiple rants about it. That doesn’t change the fact that I have said nothing to justify you attacking me. I had nothing to do with producing this patch, and I have not defended it.
Back off. I’m getting really sick of false accusations just because people are upset over a patch I didn’t create so want to attack me for defending it, when I didn’t defend it.
