I remember there was a time when everyone in PvP complained it was too powerful and I see this happen in many games that have both PvP and PvE, where something that could be great in PvE gets sacrificed to help make PvP more balanced… but I just feel archery is far too weak in PvE. I remember being able to take down 3 skull bosses with a hundred arrows, bow I go through a stack of a few hundred. Same goes with the elephants in Siptah. Archery was one of my favorite things in Conan and I find I now only use it for thrall taking. Killing things just takes far too long.
Yes, I’ve put all my points into accuracy and it barely feels like it makes a difference. Starmetal bow and arrows now feel like flint arrows and an Hyrk bow.
Just my opinion on returning after about a year or so away fro the game.
Everything that was fun and unique got nerfed for the sake of the “balance” salty tears of PVP. And the amusing thing is that it is still not balanced.
I always play as an archer.
Up until recently I played only PVP
The last time I said this people refuted everything I said, but here we go again.
Archery was better pre-launch.
One of the main points they gave was, “the damage then was low”, I acquiesced.
Then the other day I was killing a dire wolf, after 25 steel arrows, I switched to melee and killed the beast with 3 strikes of my Cimmerian axe.
I then remembered I used to kill these things with 10 snake arrows, I only used snake arrows back then because they only required 10 points in Set religion and could be made on the carpenters bench.
I remembered how you could kill other players, because you could loose into the air and they would drop over the distance so once you got the range you could kill before anything got to you.
They probably stopped this because unskilled people stood on cliff’s and built platforms to stay out of melee range and gamed the AI.
I don’t even try to PVP with a bow now, Archery is in a sad state if you ask me.
Dump all the fancy arrows, just keep fire for star metal and poison for other players / NPCs.
Give us back the control we had with the old system, when skill counted for something, and you could lead the target while moving.
Junk that stupid “bounce off skin” ricochet perk.
Just buff damage so that a few arrows are as good as a few melee strikes.
arrow bounce is the silliest perk. Ive not been able to figure out why it is there. Any time in RL that you miss your target and the arrow bounces, it is immediately destroyed. When I miss my main target and it bounces into another elephant, that doesn’t feel like much of a perk, does it? Yeah, I sure wanted 2 of them at once. Seriously though, this hasn’t hapened to me with elephants. I dont use archery anymore.
Archery is always my go to role in games. It is just so weak compared to melee here in Pve.
Building a perch to take out a boss? Sure! I’d do it in RL too dammit! I really don’t want to put my training into being a tank when my goal is to kill from a distance. It is PvE and yes, it can make the boss battles easier, but you spend a lot more time and effort on prep: harvesting, making and carrying all the arrows.
Just disable archery on PvP servers, rather than making it weak for all servers. No need to make the game less fun for PvE players to attempt (but never achieve) balance in PvP.
I was so excited when I found the herd of elephants in Siptah that I made my base right next to them. BEFORE I attached my first one. Man, do I feel silly. How much do hides cost from the vendors?
I would too, but the time I’m speaking about was before world bosses.
Rhinos were about the most dangerous things to hunt with a bow at the time, and many people hunted them from a platform.
Even I would run to elevation if I misjudged and they got to me before they were felled.
Interestingly @Barnes and I became friends because we both stalked the same rhino at the same time, and neither of us did it from elevation.
I’m pretty sure 5 gold a pop. Some think it’s expensive, but there’s no shortage of gold around. I usually go there with around 6k coins. The only downside is having to click buy so many times, these merchants really need reworking.
hmm. Maybe living next to the elephants isn’t so bad after all. Only gold I foun was guarded by some pretty overbuffed bears, that got the same treatment as the elephants
When I was balancing values on my Archery mod two years ago, I was trying to get input from PVPers on the 70/70 server I was helping admin and most of them said “Archery is crap because it should be, this is a melee game.”
While PVPers can be the most adaptive player base, vocally they are the most resistant to any sort of change.
The bottom line is, they didn’t care one way or another until they got killed by an archer. Then it was the howl of the OP nerf. Everyone wants to be that “killa with the Cimmerian axe” guy that wades in and wipes out the whole enemy army.
There was nothing more satisfying and amusing then shooting a set poison arrow at someone who had no clue where you were, and panicked and ran. . . lol.
@Taemien I found your mod and it has brought back archery joy for me! Very grateful for it. It saved my life in the goblin vault today. That and my best bearer thrall that was down to less than 5% health.
I’m especially surprised that it doesn’t crash your game. I haven’t updated it in a very long time.
Also I think you are getting a placebo effect. My mod USED to buff ranged weapons. But Funcom did a pass some time ago that actually buffed their damage past what my mod did. So it will actually nerf what Funcom has done.
And of course it doesn’t deal with DLC weapons or any new weapons added after the mod was last updated.
Hate to double post, but there may be something really important to this discussion.
Since the above user is seeing positive results in Siptah with my mod (it should not work, don’t try it lol). I think I have a more elegant solution that doesn’t require a mod.
Use Spiked Weapon fittings on your bows in Siptah. NPCs in Siptah have in general higher armor values which results in lower damage. If my mod is working for the above individual, then its because the bows/arrows modified in my mod have 20-25% armor pen despite in general having lower dmg values.
When I initially saw this thread, I had a feeling this was a possible fix, but I didn’t have any data (just been too lazy to login an test). But if my mod is providing possible results, then its gotta be an Armor Pen issue.
