When I look for a server to join, I see so many official servers but almost all of them have 0 players online. Then when I pick one, I see lots of buildings and land claims, but still no players online. On the maps I see T3 temples. It’s almost like the players are only logging in to stop decay timers because there are massive structures and lots of clans buildings but only a couple people ever online.
I know every game goes through periods where players say “This game is dead” and I don’t want to sound like one of those guys - but IS play on official servers dead?
Well, that platform are you playing on? What type of server are you looking at? Heck, what time of day are you even look? These are all important tidbits of information that you left out of your post. I just did a quick look and filtered by official servers only and the top 12 results range from 11 to 28 people online currently.

I usually Search PvP North America. Maybe I’ll check out some of them with higher populations. They do exist, but mostly I see long lines of zero populations.
I live in the Pacific but my Ping goes through North America and is too high for Oceanic Servers.

Well the top one on that list was an American PvP server with 28 players online. Ping was only 50 but I’m on the east coast so it could be different for you if that server is based on the east coast of the US. But yeah, it could be down to time or other factors.
Yeah, I noticed that searching last night. My first search showed some numbers on some servers, then when I searched again all the servers went to zero.
There might be another solution, but I had to restart the game again to see the real numbers again.
