Black Screen of Death

I submitted the below information as a ticket and noticed that it got immediately closed. Tried it again and got the same result. Figured I would try the forums for a potential solution since the ticketing system isn’t gonna get me anywhere.

I had a game crash while playing on my local/private game. I haven’t been able to log into the Conan Exiles since without getting the same fatal error. I can make it to the launch screen, select Conan Exiles, and watch Conan save the girl. Then I get a black screen crash with the below error code.

Fatal error:

[File:C\B\tech_exiles\code\Engine\Source\Runtime\RenderCore\Private\RenderingThread.cpp] [Line: 959]

GameThread timed out waiting for RenderThread after 60.00 secs.

I tried verifying files, uninstalling and reinstalling Conan Exiles, updating Windows, updating Steam, updating Conan Exiles, updating drivers, clearing my cache, clearing browser cookies, logging out and back into Steam, and disabling the Isle of Siptah DLC. My hardware is easily good enough for the game and my software is up to date so it should work but it doesn’t. Please help.

Edits based on advice:

Based on Kapoteeni’s reponse I double checked to make sure my mod list is empty.

Based on JJDancer’s reponse I tried the -insecure and -nosteam commands. I also tried a different computer.

One thing I didn’t see you listing as tried: do you have any mods installed, and did you try disabling/removing them?

Good catch, no mods to disable. I still checked to make sure there were none in my list though.

At first I didn’t know that the Isle of Siptah (which I haven’t even played yet) counted as a DLC. So I made sure my mod list was empty.

I also saw this list in the comments for the Fatal Error Like: 959 article above provided by Ignasi. I can’t add it because apparently I can’t add pictures.

Not 100% sure how to use -insecure and -nosteam commands but I think I know where to put the commands in Steam. I will try this one and see how it goes.

Using a different computer doesn’t work for me either. Same error (once again not a hardware or driver issue).

I have already Uninstalled and Reinstalled Battleye as well. I just didn’t list it in my original post. I also tried disabling Battleye with no luck that way either.

I also noticed that my issue is definitely different than most instances of this error since I don’t actually make it into the game and every other game I have is working just fine.

This is baffling, but kinda helps narrow it down a bit.

This is just a theory, but there might be something wonky going on with your connection to Funcom Live Services which is connected to up going to main menu. It should just throw an error rather than crash.

But here’s what you can try. First one, disconnect from the internet and load steam into offline mode. Then launch Conan Exiles. See if you can load into singleplayer.

Next one is to try playing on a different network.

I don’t believe this is going to work, but it helps rule out some culprits. And if it does work, then there is something buggy with FLS.

But the weird thing is, you were able to play normally, until a crash. But for some reason that crash affected other computers you are trying to play on. These sorts of coincidences make troubleshooting hell sometimes.

I don’t even make it to the screen where I can choose to load a single player game. But I agree, that would be the way to go. Not sure if Conan Exiles reaches out to the Internet at all for a single player game. Never tried to play without Internet before. I will give it a whirl.

Wow, I couldn’t even get to the launch screen much less play offline. Guess that isn’t gonna work.

That did get me to think though. Assuming the error message is useful, I wonder what computer that file is located on? I am positive it isn’t mine since I looked. But if that file is necessary to run the game and CE should be able to run offline as of last year then it has to be on my computer.

I think I will take a look a little later and see if showing hidden files will reveal something here.

Try launching the game from you library on steam not from your desk top. Click on your steam icon, log in. Look up your game in your library. Click on play.

Have you tried to delete (or rename) the .ini files so the game starts with a fresh set of settings? (Even uninstalling the game does not necessarily delete these files).
D:\Program Files\steamapps\common\Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Config (or whatever drive you use )
Also, play with your graphics drivers. I had to roll back mine at one time to get the game to launch, then after it successfully launched I updated them again.

So I tried launching in offline mode and got some BattlEye errors. Since BattlEye is disabled, I uninstalled it and it removed that error. Then I got the same results with the Line 595 error.

I did check for hidden files and noticed that the file RenderingThread.cpp and the referenced folders in my original error message don’t exist even while the game is attempting to start. I was hoping that the error message could lead me closer to the solution.

I do think that trying to start the game offline is the correct way to troubleshoot going forward. Thanks Taemien.

So to bigjohn’s point, I normally go into the steam menu to start games. I could reverse the advice though and let the game install the desktop icon and see if it works better that way. I have seen some weirder things work when troubleshooting issues. Thanks bigjohn.

To JJDancer’s point, I have copied the D:\Program Files\steamapps\common\Conan Exiles\ file onto my desktop for now. Since then I have been deleting those config files every time I remove the game and reinstall.

I have not played with my graphics drivers at all. I will roll back and see if that is what is causing the issue.

JJDancer was on the right track with the graphics drivers. I couldn’t roll back my driver firmware since my laptop is only 4 months old. However, I have 2 GPUs on my laptop so I disabled my Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. My Intel GPU was able to get me to the Funcom Services screen. From there I was able to go to a single player game and go to the screen where I could join a public server.

I will test further and see how far I can get on the Intel GPU. Currently, it is looking like Conan Exiles isn’t liking my GeForce GPU at all.

Sometimes game have problems with multiple GPU’s.
Disabling one of them for the game can indeed work, but it can also work if you disable the onboard Intel graphics.
Try specify which GPU you want to use in the nvidia control pannel.
Even so you could fully delete the graphics driver and manually download a new one.
Geforce experience offers a simple install of drivers for nvidia cards. I suggest doing an custom install instead of a fast/easy install. and select : Do a clean install. which wipes your old driver off.
This has worked for me in many occasions. I also use a laptop with 2 GPU’s. and its always a problem with windows and gaming. so i disabled onboard.
If however, it isnt working with nvidia. Try adding more RAM memory to your ONBOARD Graphics, this way the game will get a bit more resources from the onboard GPU at the cost of some ram. (1-2gb).
Do this only when you have more then 16gb ram, because conan is very ram hungry.

If you need any help, feel free to message me.
If i can help you with voicechat or on discord, i will.

That’s great advice Rustafari. Unfortunately I tried disabling the Intel GPU and using the GeForce GPU exclusively. I got the same Line 959 error as I originally did.

Trying to play with this substandard card is painful. I am old school so I can deal with the pixilated graphics and lack of grass. I get booted out of public servers every 2 to 10 minutes though. Maybe I can play longer on my personal game?

I definitely think we identified the issue here. I have to admit I am impressed with the forums and community here. I am used to seeing forums where everyone ignores the issue and talks about something else or offers useless solutions. Every response I got was a useful solution and I really appreciate the effort everyone involved has put into this solution.

Now I just gotta wait for some developers to make my Conan Exiles play nice with my GeForce so that this issue can be resolved.

I would really recommend you install geforce experience and do a Custom Clean install of the RTX 3060 Driver.
You can also try fiddle with the nvidia control pannel settings to see if that works.

So what is happening is that not the game, but Battle Eye, is having compatibility issues with your Geforce software.
Google that and see if you find any solutions for the graphics software.

It makes sense that after uninstalling and disabling BattlEye that it shouldn’t be a factor. Having said that, it could still be a factor the way programs are written sometimes. I will have to check that out JJDancer.

I did do a clean install of the RTX 3060 driver Rustafari. However, I haven’t messed with the nvidia control panel which could give me some positive results. I will have to give that a whirl Rustafari.

To be honest, I did not think you could play CE without battle Eye. The service starts as soon as you click the CE launcher. Did you turn it off in services, or is it even there since you say you uninstalled it? Just curious

I am also noticing if I wait a moment every time before I open my inventory I won’t crash. Problem is my habits get in the way.

Hahaha, and don’t even think about opening a thrall’s inventory.

I can play on my private game and unofficial servers without BattlEye. RIght below the Launch/Continue buttons there is a More button that will allow you to Uninstall BattlEye and also Disable BattlEye. I had to do both to get rid of an error message I was getting earlier when I was offline and trying to play on my private game. I think I was getting the error message due to not being online.
