The shield system in this game is ether broken or it has really bad block box or something. I can have my shield up waiting for an attack and I still get hit as if I have no shield. So, is it a broken system or intended to work like this?
Some blows have the breakshield effect. For instance, if you see a Berserker raising his 2h sword over his head, that blow is unblockable (unless you have the perk that allows you to block these blows at a cost). Other blows are so strong that may stun and unbalance you (the Arena Champion does this). So, you need to see what weapon your opponent has and which blow he’ll throw.
If you are waiting for an attack shield up, as you said, the AI will identify that and you’ll get a breakshield move very likely. You can use it in your advantage. Roll at the last moment and you’ll have your opponent locked in the animation. It’s a very good opening for you to land z few blows.
There’s also a bit of an imput lag or failure to respond to the command. Sometimes you press to raise your shield and have to do it again, because nothing happened.
That said, if you get a little used to these quirks, the shield is your best friend in many occasions. It has offensive moves too and, when you want to take advantage of the full combo of a weapon, you can quickly unequip it and equip it again when you need.
It takes a little getting used to, it could be a little smoother, but it definitely works.
Is the same for the spear weapon? That is what I keep having an issue with. The AI start’s the combo and sometimes I block sometimes it just hits even if the time before it blocked. But maybe it’s a part of the combo that has that shieldbreak your talking about.
More likely there’s some lag there, because to break your shield guard, the opponent with the spear needs to kick the shield. The spear itself can’t break the block.
