Build 1 1/2 walls high

Good evening, I saw someone mention building 1 1/2 walls high but can’t find the post now. I’m on official PS5, is that a mod? If not, how do you do it? I don’t want to build 2 walls high if I can get away from it but I need more than 1 wall high for crafting stations.

There are some such building pieces within some mods.

There are also some tricks one can use regarding offset fence foundations from main floor foundations
and pillars to put a dividing floor at 1.5 walls high. However, it does limit the height of building before it again becomes either 1 or 2 walls high/story of building.
Also, getting the stairs to fit properly can be a bit difficult, much easier if you have the “stage” build pieces from the Debaucheries of Derketo.
Or if you are using old architectural styles where the ground floor was plain earth and the upper floor (hence the 1st floor in much of Europe) is the only one that is fully built.

@Eradicati0n has some videos up which feature these techniques.

Thanks. I actually use part of his starter pve base for my house layout. I’ll see if I can find his instructions.

This is how I do it. It’s pretty cool, but you gotta do certain tricks and stuff to make other parts of a building align appropriately if you’re doing split elevation sections in your building for more dynamic styles. I truly wish they had opted to make walls a bit taller by default though. It’s too late at this point, but probably should be something they consider if they make a CE2 or something.

Half walls can get very messy.
I don’t want to discourage you; however, messing around with the building system on official servers may not be very enjoyable. Instead, I recommend that you either go for a private server with some mods supporting this building style or play in solo mode.
Especially the mod found at:

might be quite helpful. Otherwise, you can also explore the building mods to find one that suits you.
Speaking from experience, the more sophisticated you want to build, the more time-consuming it will be. Building can be a lot of fun if you truly enjoy it.

OP is is on an official ps5 server. They were asking because they saw someone who did it on their server. No mod options, dude.

Offset!
It may look like half

Yes, we’re aware. @LostBrythunian already mentioned that and I confirmed I do that same method. I think you need to read though the posts more, my guy… you missed a good portion of the conversation.

Place a foundation > place a fence piece on it > place a foundation to the fenced side of the original foundation. Rinse repeat if you wish to raise foundations. If you want to lower them, replace the fence with a fence foundation. Once you’re at your desired height, place fence foundations so they’re level with your foundations and they’ll take the structural load, add walls, then remove your original foundations (or lower them).

I am going to see if I can throw together a quick visual representation for this for Birder.

I believe you can also use standard walls in place of the fences to get a slightly higher snap point in one go (if I recall correctly, the wall option worked out as equivalent to using the fence trick twice) - but it’s been a while since I used that method.

Hard to tell what you’re saying. Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but you can’t snap to fences. You can’t stack a wall on a fence either, so it doesn’t work. Same with “half walls” like the lattice. The only thing that works are fence foundations and walls. I do however use fences to fill gaps between areas to create a taller wall. If you are able to create enough stability between the ceiling/roof on a building, you can fill the gap between the wall and the ceiling/roof with a fence. It’s usually one of the best ways to fill gaps when dealing with varying degrees of shift in height on a single building.

I should really put together a collection of screens where @Marylambs and I used these. We use them quite often for variable heights within buildings. They make for more dynamic designs and often open a room up quite a bit with an open floor plan type design. They work especially well on small houses to give the feeling of a more spacious living space than what would appear on the outside.

Starting at the default level, you can increase the height of your foundations by placing a wall on the edge. The next foundation will have an elevated (optional) snap position. By placing in this way, you can accomplish this:

.

Alternatively, you can also work the other direction by using fence foundations. Place your starting foundation. Then select a fence foundation. The fence foundations should have two different snap points. One that is flush with your foundation block. Another that is just below flush (it’s half the height of the increase featured in the above picture). Like this:

.

You can continue to “stair step” your way down in order to reach a foundation depth that you are seeking. Or - you can create a neat little elongated stair (which the character can ascend/descend wtihout missing a step!):

No you are misunderstanding -
if you place a standard foundation and place a fence on top of it, you can snap another foundation at a higher level (I believe you are familiar with that ‘trick’?) All I was explaining was that you can (or at least could) do the same thing with a wall in place of the fence, at which point you can snap a foundation to it at the equivalent height that would have been gained by doing the fence trick twice.

Is that clearer? I would gather some screenshots, but I’ve unistalled the game, so ti would take more effort than I am willing to go to for something so comparatively unimportant (since the fence trick works fine anyway, it just takes fewer repetitions by using walls).

Edit: Ah - I should have just looked at @Cauthey’s post - he shows all that is needed

Once you have these differentiated snap elevations established, you can pull the walls and/or fence foundations, and then extend out in any direction. And as you can see here - this will then allow you to create a space or room with walls that can include any fractionally larger height:

.

This would gain you the liberty to use a wall, and say a fence piece to create your 1 1/2 walls you were looking to create. It really unlocks the creative options for 1.5 high, or 2.5 high “vaulted” ceilings. It allows for split level designs. And even half-floors that you can use to maximize the available real estate in a given area. Or for creative storage. I once set one of these half-floors above a vault. And was able to access the vault through a tidy little window like you see in this shot where the iron chests are:

This is how I do it… but I tend to do some pretty intense things with it beyond the stairs and slight increases. I often use stage stairs as well to go between areas. It works well enough for wooden builds like most of mine, but it would be nice to get alternative materials for stage pieces. My bath has nice marble and wooden steps going into it lol…

Anyway, @Birder - I know this isn’t necessarily the solution you may have been seeking. But either way - I hope this opens up your creative possibilities.

Using the foundation stair stepping methods, I’ve been able to come up with this little recessed alley way - which I am still rather pleased with:

I know exactly what you mean  I tended to use a lot of these same ‘advanced’ building techniques - but had the advantage of mods as well, both for when I couldn’t quite figure it out and just to fix the stairs issue by allowing normal stairs to overlap into the bottom foundation - that way I could get marble ‘half’ stairs when I needed them (which, of course, they can’t so easily allow on officials because of the potential for abuse/exploits). (But I always preferred using the same methods as you guys do whenever possible - just as good practice in case I ever wanted to build on official.)

Some stairs and ramps will clip through ceilings, which is typically what I’ll use. For example, the flotsam ramp clips through, as does the flotsam stairs. I’ve used these for that same purpose on my builds. Unfortunately, still is wooden themed.

Man that’s a lot of work for someone like me that goes all squirrel and abandons a server to try something else.
