Build 1 1/2 walls high

Oh you’re one of those guys.

To clarify what I’m wanting to do…I’m building workstations with apartments above. I don’t want to go 3 walls high but several crafting stations are slightly higher than a single wall.

Y’all have given me an idea, if it will work. I may use a fence or fence foundation as a wall then put one of the 1/2 fences on that. I should be able to add ceiling tiles then put walls for the apartments on the ceiling tiles. I’ll try it tonight and report back.

Hearing what it is you are trying to accomplish - another thing that you might be able to try is to 1) place the too-tall workstations, and then 2) place the supported ceiling tiles atop them.

If you build this way, and build your second floor around the workstation, instead of trying to fit the workstation into a tight space, you can sometimes take advantage of a little bit of leniency by getting the ceiling tiles to clip through the top parts of the benches.

Also - wedge (triangle) ceiling tiles and carpets can do wonders for that pesky little part of a bench that you cannot quite enclose.

Also, if you “play around” doing offsetting with squares and triangles, you can sneak in fence foundations into the middle of square foundations. Here, I wanted a tight furnace cage area. I didn’t want to consume a 3x2 space. But 3x1 was entirely too tight - too narrow.

So, I pulled out some of the square foundations, and wrestled with some wedges until I could get a fence foundation into the ground at the right snap point to bisect the square foundation. The result is a 3x1.5 space. Which is perfect. (You can see the other 0.5 where the chest rests at the back of the stair.

Apologies for the influx of images, but here’s a bunch of examples in my own builds of using fence foundations to raise and lower parts of builds. Let me preface these by saying you’ll occasionally see patched areas where I used a fence to fill a gap. This is where you have to consider which side to expose for the fence. Sometimes flipping it backwards can give you a better look, sometimes not. Also, in the screenshot of the building in the frozen water, we wanted to align it a bit better, but because we started building a tad bit too low, it didn’t align perfectly. You can see it in the vertically shifted side trim of the entrance… compared to the earlier screenshot in this list of a similar entrance that aligns well. Anyway, enjoy… hopefully this drums up new ideas for you.

One discount trick this one sometimes uses is putting the half walls (lattice or stable) or fences on a wall and then using awnings for the roof.
Some awning sets have few, if any, interior poles, and thus can make a nearly flush “roofing”.
But mixing and matching is a hassle and it is basically only good for single story units.

This one thinks that design is also used inside Al Merayah in places.

Ah yes, I miss BMan’s videos. He was always a great source for building ideas, but beyond that provided such fantastic explanation of real world architecture as well.

Ok, I figured a way to do it. I used the fence foundations to lower the outermost row of foundations, put up my walls (must do this before placing ceiling tiles or walls want to clip to them instead) and then used ceilings so that the floor inside was even.

Good stuff!

I feel particularly clever when I can leverage the building system in a way, as you’ve done, to come up with something that is different than the same old, boring, square snaps.

Just out of curiosity, was it the Tinker’s Bench? That thing and I go round and round every time I build. :face_holding_back_tears:

Yes and I tried putting the bench and then a ceiling tile, no joy so did the tile first still didn’t work. I like this better anyway. As soon as I get enough mats to finish I’ll post. I really like how it’s coming out.

Another 1 1/2 wall setup that I am really pleased with. This is in my RP character’s kitchen. It’s the back door - actually it’s the opposite side of that alley way I snapped above. I really love that the fence sits on top of the door frame - almost like one of those above the door window/vent things. You can do some really cool stuff when you offset your blocks.

I have the courtyard side of the workshops open to the yard with the the Yamatai tower doorframe with the 1/2 fence above. It looks awesome!
