I have been sitting back watching Funcom’s next move on the abrupt disabling of the family share feature to see whether I would continue supporting the game or walk away. The fact that Funcom listened to their playerbase and took corrective measures fairly quickly will result in my continued support of the game including another purchase of the game and DLCs should they give advanced notice that family share will be disabled. Kudos to you Funcom on making the right move here.
Absurd! Why should they? I don’t agree with this at all. From a business point of view, it would be a bad decision. That could be seen as not valuing or believing in their game and so giving it for free to drum up business. What about valuing their employees and paying them for their hard work? You are a customer, they are not a charity.
What about my situation? We have bought 5 copies so our family can play together. Should I get another 5 copies? Should I be refunded for 2 or 3? Or, because we didn’t activate family share, we just lose out completely? Ludicrous!
PS - this is all moot now but I just couldn’t let this one go.
No, it wouldn’t.
No.
Yes.
Thank you for listening
Let me just clarify this apparently common misconception real quick - Family Share does not allow you to play WITH your friends or family. It allows your family member (or trusted friend) to play the game when you yourself are NOT playing, if you have pre-authorized their Steam account and computer to borrow your license.
So Family Sharing is really not all that similar to buying a separate copy of the game. Some uses of family sharing can also be achieved with two copies of the game, and vice versa, but they’re separate tools for separate goals really.
Yeah, I understand all that. You missed the point of my argument - why should anyone receive a free copy of the game because of this issue.
Because it’s the right thing to do.
In theory, they aren’t not being an admin, as it is a password and not hard coded to one particular character. So if they know it, they know it. Most use the alt char to create dungeons or RP armies, then switch to another character (so they can fight them with the group) and play “normal” by choice. But in reality, they can always enter the password and use admin powers. Which is why when i owned a server, i did not participate. I only tried to create (with the limits of console admin) dungeons and raid bases. But no playing on server in general pop for my admins and me conflict of interest is to easy to fall into.
My suggestion for everyone that has been negatively impacted by the lack of family sharing and the inability to create more than one character is to cancel your private servers. Stop playing and let the servers host companies put the pressure on Funcom to fix this issue.
Please, read above the announcement from Tascha, they already took decision to fix the issue the way that will please you.
They already reenabled family sharing (or at least begun the process). Those of us still discussing it are doing so just on a philosophical level.
Thank you Funcom for seeing the light on this and doing the right thing swiftly. My hope is that this whole episode will encourage you to really start examining the way your game is played and the workarounds players and Admins are forced to find to make up for its deficits. Better Admin tools and the ability to make multiple characters on a single account are REALLY important. Please take us seriously about this now. Maybe a survey ASKING us what features we feel we really need and questions about WHY so many use family share would be in order. Thank you.
Oh I don’t think they should give out free copies either, really. For one it would be odd, for another it would not be a real solution to the problem. Reenabling FS and then seeing what can be done to remedy the situation that caused them to remove it in the first place is the right call. IE exactly what they’re actually doing.
You don’t really lose anything. Your bonus is that you can play at the same time. Family sharing does not allow network members to play when the main account owner is online. So we have to play one at a time. But you will not have such a problem.
There were some ways to circumvent the ban on simultaneous play, but like any such scams, they can be turned off. In addition, you are insured against the problems that we have just encountered ) If for some reason the family sharing will be disabled for a while or at all, you will not be affected.
I took the time to comment beforehand, so I’ll also take the time to comment on a positive note. I don’t have a lot to say though.
Thank you for re-enabling it again (for now). Personally I really appreciate the decision to re-enable it again. I look forward to seeing Funcom’s fix.
I think is a bad move to reenable Family share just because of community pressure , bottom line nothing good comes from family account sharing , except people trying dodgy stuff!!! FACT! Hence when they cant do their dodgy stuff they cry as hard and loud as possible, i mean i read the whole thread and not 1 person made a compelling argument in my opinion !
@Punisher111 , again, MUCH good comes from family sharing on many private servers, especially those role playing servers where intricate story lines are created by the players, groups of players and even administrators. Many of us actually make content on these servers, small dungeons, quests, complicated politics and diplomacy and there are even those who have put hundreds, even thousands of hours into not only their “main” character, but their 'alternative" character (‘alt’s). Family Share allows the administrator(s) to use their “main” character for administration duties and rule enforcement while also allowing them to play on their own servers and enjoy the fruits of their and the players’ hard work.
I can understand, having played on ‘vanilla’ “Official” servers how family share can be used for abusing the game along with other exploits, but that is one reason so many of us do not play there, but have actually found lasting and dear friends from all around the world on the private servers. A decent to excellent administrator can solve so many of the problems and abuse found on “official” servers and many of us donate through Patreon to those servers and/or to the mod developers that enrich the game so very much. So, if or when you tire of nothing but PvP, rebuilding, raiding with little background stories, try one of the flourishing private servers! Join in and create a rich history and branching story lines!
Except that the screaming and kicking part wasn’t the reason we reverted this for now.
If that was the case we would have had a lot more situations like these. Believe me when I say there are enough instances were kicking and screaming doesn’t get you want you want with us. It’s the least of the defining factors.
We are actually more thoughtful and take as many facts and details into account as we can. In this case there were many different aspects playing into the situation and all of them were taken into consideration.

(I am joking, obviously, please don’t hate me).
