Family Sharing and Conan Exiles - Feedback thread

Hey guys,

First I understand that the gauntlet without having access to Family Sharing that many are facing right now is stressful and totally sucks. However, the opinions of that decisions is not the purpose of this post. This post is meant to try and provide alternatives for immediate relief since we do not have a current ETA on when the decision will be reversed. The important part is that Family Sharing will return (per the announcement I’ve linked above) in the future. But until then, this is a post for, “what are our options until then?”

I am 100% ignorant when it comes to this stuff, so I’m going to be leaning on the community to fill this post with any and all possibilities known and not yet known.

  1. Green Man Gaming had a sale but it expired. I’ll monitor other legitament sites and add necessary links if I spot any other sales.

Note: I don’t really know how a second account works, I have just read a lot of people making a statement that “if I had known this decision was coming, I would have bought a second copy.” That is the purpose of the sale link.

Update: Mikey, a veteran Conan Exiles player who often has valuable insight, had this to say about purchasing another copy and it may be worth considering:

  1. The Pippi mod has some tools to allow players to hop out of clan and into another clan for building purposes. If you need help with this, here is Pippi’s discord where veteran Pippi users can surely offer advice with this.

Joshtech (Pippi author) told me about this one, I’ve never used it. So if somebody could reply to this thread on the steps necessary that would be great.

  1. Ask private server admins to temporarily disable decay on their servers.

  2. Possibly get in contact with the server owner for the “Exiled-RP” server. They use a mod and some sort of server script for character switching. Here’s the mod link.

Note: Character switching with a script and/or mod may only work if it’s on the same Steam Account. Again, count me as Mr. Ignorant, I’m just trying to post whatever options I’m hearing about. On that note, you may also try the Server Admin Discord to see if anybody has tricks up their sleeve there, though that’s obviously only going to be useful for server owners and admins.

If other options are presented, I’ll add to the list. Thanks for your help.

Probably best to make polite, reasoned objections as to why this decision should be reversed while a better, more flexible solution is devised. Not sure giving funcom more money will persuade them to reverse things.

If they do, they better reverse soon, there is something in game called decay timer. I am also not paying for other 3 copies so my family can all play, specially considering when I bought the game, sharing was a part of the buying decision. As usual changing terms in the middle of the process… typical funcom behaviour… sorry I am really… not for me but for my family, I could still play in my account, but, as things are now, I refuse (yes it’s my choice, so are other future choices, get the hint?).

Anything you can do to get the decay timer postponed?

Maybe get on the servers we all play with my account and ask admins to disable decay timers. It is the only viable solution I see. Only them can somewhat fix this new mess.

Send me a message and I will tell you where to buy it cheap. Cant mention it here without it getting removed

Alas buying a new account doesn’t help those who have many hundreds if not thousands of hours on char they have already made. As a new account means that cannot easily transfer their character over…

However in pippi you can quickly add levels, recipes and emotes to a new char to at least help things along… I dont know a way of adding the map markers though.

Not that I advocate giving Funcom more money as a reward for this debacle (as consumers witholding purchases is the only power we have, noise on the forums means nothing in the end), but:

in the interest of helping those who for whatever reason are desperate enough to want to do so - it should work, assuming you buy the game for the same account you used to family share with. Of course you’d also need to re-buy all the DLC etc.

i have plenty of hrs…just purchased it for the acct that was family shared at everything is still there. i will have to rebuy the dlc as well though

I am extremely disappointed with the way that Funcom dropped the ball on the handling of the removal of family share, their official response to how it happened and lack of remedy to all those legitimate players suddenly left with unplayable accounts.

While I will not argue Funcom’s decision to remove family share, I can disagree with how it has been handled. To throw out a quick ‘oops’, didn’t know it was going to happen this quick or without an announcement, screams lack of organization in the leadership chain somewhere. Whoever was having these ‘discussions’ with Valve on how to remedy the problem that family share may pose with some offenders from ‘their side’ that flipped that switch should be sitting in front of their boss right now being held accountable.

The fact that the ‘oops’ did not come with an immediate reversal of this action to provide legitimate players that might have hundreds or even thousands of hours in this game the ability to sign in and secure their character and property they have worked so hard for while trying to suddenly come up with an extra $40 to keep playing is just mind boggling to me.

By all means, do the oops Funcom but temporarily reverse the oops action, provide a legitimate notice, put the game back on sale like it was last weekend for these people you have pulled the rug out from under and THEN flip that switch and turn off family share.

It is also a bit perplexing to see an official response that mentions the reasoning behind the removal of family share is because ‘some’ individuals that were banned in ’ very extreme cases where indisputable proof was acquired’ were misusing the family share service to get back into the game and then suggesting that the sudden removal of this feature for ALL will remedy this??

No Funcom, we all know that removing family share will NOT remedy this as those that are willing to cheat will simply make a new account and purchase the game again, probably through some internet $15 special not offered through Steam. What removing family share does do is just put more cash in your pocket when the cheaters and ALL legitimate players that used family share are now required to purchase the game again. Let me repeat, removing family share will NOT stop the cheaters that have been banned from playing the game, it will just put more cash in Funcom’s pocket when the cheaters and all legitimate players using the family share as intended are all required to purchase the game again.

I am also a bit put off by Funcom’s statement that they did not think the family share feature would be of any benefit other than to dodge the bans???

Wow, in addition to the roleplayers and admins that you acknowledge, how about all the legitimate families using the feature as intended that now have family members unable to access accounts? How about the female gamers that have been stalked from game to game that use the family share feature to try to escape those using battlenet and other means to follow them game to game or server to server after Funcom and Steam has failed to act due to no outward signs of aggression? There are a lot of legitimate reasons that people use family share, it is not just for the small segment of very extreme abusers that have been banned and shame on you Funcom for not recognizing this and trying to lump us all into the same category as the extreme abusers.

Yes Funcom, there are many decent players that do not cheat that have been using the family share feature legitimately and with one quick unannounced flip of the switch, you have seen to it that these players are not able to access their accounts. I doubt most of the families will be throwing out another $40 per family member to keep playing Conan but I have no doubt those ‘very extreme’ abusers will have no issue tossing that $15 or whatever the going rate is out to places like G2A and were already back into the game yesterday while many legitimate players still do not have access.

Your lame suggestion that the ‘oops’ will stand because you feel that keeping these few very extreme offenders that have been offending for months, maybe years off the game at the sacrifice of hundreds or maybe thousands of legitimate players is the right call is just asinine.

You want to do something from ‘your end’ Funcom? How about fixing all the things that are exploitable in this game, many of which have been exploitable since I started playing in early release 2017.

Not until I saw the lame official response on what happened with family share, the reason for it and the lack of flipping that switch back to give legitimate players time to come up with the funds to purchase the game right after the game jumps back to full price did I realize that this was just a tacky attempt at a quick cash grab. Shame on you Funcom

If the main account was banned, all family shared ones are banned too. It could be so easy…

BUT the question: Can Funcom access the main account via Steam from a family shared account? Is Steam providing such a function?

And @Funcom: you never make auch a decision when half the office is on vacation… That was just a very bad move. I hope you learn from that.

Yes, steam provides, Funcom just have to implement it.

Then why didnt they do it? Well probably, because the devs are on vacation (like myself) and this was a rushed manager decision.

Roll it back!! I dont even use it, but thats just a bad move for many legit players.

well, alot have been said about the very popular use of family sharing…
Rp is the most important core community of the game, and many, many more use family share to create alternative characters in worlds they love.

i played over 4k hours, mostly on rp-pvp servers. running multiple plotlines, as any rp’er knows, is a pure pleasure. not to mention my main characters are on family shared accounts, and now i’m locked away from them to an undefined amount of time.

from the beautiful builds, the worlds i love, the payed purchases on some servers, but most importantly? from the stories. there are 2 wars, a harem, and an inquisition, all on halt, on multiple servers, due to this.

it hurts, it stings, and im in withdrawal.
and i know, and they will know, as this will surely affect every measurable thing about game-play in conan exiles, that im not alone in this.

you do not take an option that has been there from the start, without notice, to subdue offenders.

shouting “this is the reason you should treat us better”
is redundant, even if true.

its not about getting another copy of the game, its about having the account and thus story we invested in huge amounts of time, creative effort, and heart, ripped away, without warning.

It just show how disconnected from fans Funcom is…I mean without warning with poor reasoning…c’mon…I can’t play with people I like to, they need to create new Characters because of that “unwise” decision.

Maybe spend some time developing possibility to have more characters per account on the server? Or is it not possible again?

Only reason I came back is for the RP and modding community which is awesome and fixing Your broken game…SHAME…

Funcom, please note that while you are working with the data received from the Steam, the servers continue the process of decaying structures. And on PVP servers continue raids on the homes left without defenders. So that in this moment your decision upsets maximum harm law-abiding players.
If you even decide to permanently disable family sharing, enable it at least temporarily so that players can join clans or hand over their stuff to account owners before it’s stuff being looted or get decay! Otherwise, you lose the sympathy of everyone whose stuff will be lost during your reflection. The decision must be made very quickly.

Considering how long we (the community that plays legit) have lived with those dregs of humanity also known as cheaters, exploiters and worse running rampant - it seems an odd choice (to put it mildly) to have Funcom all of a sudden care so deeply about getting rid of them that you consider it acceptable to “pull the plug” on all legitimate users, even if it is supposedly temporary.

Getting rid of cheaters etc is of course more than welcome, but burning down the house because there were complaints about the wallpaper isn’t the way to go. My point being, I’m all for action being taken, but which actions they are do matter.

I’m not going to buy into the conspiracy of the end of sales coinciding with the removal of this feature, that has to be just that (a coincidence).

I would also urge anyone that can wait to not rush out and buy another copy of the game, doing so puts you at a significant disadvantage compared to Family Sharing (I did this myself a while back).

Finally, I hope that despite the somewhat cavalier dismissal of the feature in the statement, Funcom does indeed bring back Family Sharing - though by then it may be too little, too late for a lot of people (this game does not lend itself well to waiting and seeing after all).

I made an account with the intention of just replying to this thread and express my disappointment with this decision.
I am one of the admins for one of the most successful and popular RP servers out there, and can’t currently play on the server where I am admin on since I was depending on Family Share to access my two accounts.
Please come up with a solution to allow the RP servers in this game to continue functioning.
Some of us simply can’t afford to buy multiple copies of the game…
There are just as many RP players out there as there are “regular” players, so please, please, PLEASE fix this asap.
Love,
Joleg
EDIT: I would also like to add that maybe it was not such a smart move to “pull the plug” just as people started their vacation and wished to play. Maybe revert it for now and make this decision to go after these rule breakers after summertimes? ;-;

So for example, a friend was using the Family Sharing. She loves this game. She has even purchased the DLCs for it. Now she has to purchase her own copy. which she has… but now she has to purchase the DLCs again? Not cool, Funcom. Get your crap together.

I would like to add something. I too am an admin on a very successful Conan Exiles Server. .We have an alt for playing and an alt for doing our admin duties. Every week we keep a top ten list of players who have the most time in the game. There is a raffle and guess what, We have a drawing from those names and buy the person a DLC This is how you reward this particular server for spending several hundred dollars supporting FunCom Get your act together, I am sure there are other ways to deal with trolls, oh like maybe putting in a setting that lets the server owner decide whether to enable family sharing on his particular server. One of our players is a software designer and he said that is relatively
easy to do.
