The issues with Royal Armour is currently for me.
Durability on chest piece too low.
Cant craft exceptional and flawless. Solution is to move it to the armorer bench and either allow anyone or Hanar of Hossonia to make it.
So unless it´s another armor that just isn’t to be used I hope they fix it.
Indeed both of the royal armour sets are medium armour. The only difference really is that the epic version has a substantially more armour than the basic one. I don’t think you can craft the epic one though until much later when you can craft the hardened leather.
I use the epic armour often when I am just farming etc as I like the looks of it. But it would be nice if the epic version also provided +9 encumbrance (like the other medium and light armour sets) instead of the basic +5 to bring it in line with other comparables.
