GPU utilization with the UI

I’m not sure this is a bug per se, but I wonder if anyone else is seeing this. I’ve been experimenting with tweaking some of the UE4 settings and one odd thing I’ve noticed is that if I have the UI open (for example, your inventory or a crafting workstation) and Effects Quality is anything other than Low, I see the GPU utilization spike, about 15% higher than normal. If it’s Low, then there’s no change.

I think this is strange because I can’t imagine what the game engine thinks it needs to be doing with particle effects when most the of the screen is covered with the UI rather than doing it’s thing with rain, snow, etc.

As a practical thing, I tend to just leave the particle effects at low because I am not a fan of how rain and specular lighting looks in the game. Just something I noticed that seemed odd.

It isn’t just the UI. I haven’t monitored it specifically, but if I his ESC to bring up the menu and leave it up, the fans on my laptop always kick into a higher gear.

I think it is because the UI (well I guess the main menu is a UI as well) is an overlay on top of the existing graphics, so there is even more to process. It isn’t replacing what was there, just adding more.
