How complex is the combat?

TLDR - What would you like to see changed in the game’s combat system?

I’ve seen a number of posts over my brief stay here on the forums discussing combat complexity. Often, these post express a wish for more complex combat. This game has one of the most complex combat systems I personally have ever played. I’m coming from games like Ark and Skyrim where Left Mouse Button is the primary attack and Right Mouse Button or CTRL is the special attack, if a special attack even exists. This game chains combos together with light and heavy attacks and each weapon has its own special abilities which vary based on when an attack is performed in the sequence and whether or not something is equipped in the offhand. I think it’s a relatively robust combat system, but I wonder what other people think of it. If you would like to reference a different game, please give specifics for those of us who have never played those games. If you say you wish it were more like dark souls, that phrase means nothing to me, because I’ve never played dark souls. Is it a matter of playstyle? Is it a matter of the AI being too simple? How complex is the combat in CE and why? Thank you.

The combat is not bad, but there is still room to develop. It still feels like trading blows to me, sure, you can light and heavy hit, but that alone doesnt make a good combat system.

I think enemy AI is the big problem right now, it doesnt matter how skilled a player can be, there is just nothing to be done when the AI just wants to close to you, using the shortest possible path and gang up until they die or get you killed, they dont think, they dont surround you, they dont use consumables, they dont fall back and call for help, they dont have weakness/toughness, etc…

I also feel we lack “actions”, neither players or enemies can parry, we cant counter, there are no “special” or signature moves to turn the tides of a battle. With a good HP, a good weapon and high armor I can charge blindly most enemies and easily win, most enemies cant ‘outplay’ me because they cant take advantage if I play dumb or charge relentlessly. These actions could also be used by skilleld players to beat stronger enemies, a good example, try beating a world boss in melee combat using light armor and light weapons, its just nor worth it, the combat is too much ‘trading blows’ oriented due to lack of AI and combat movements.
