How on earth can getting stuck inside a Rhino STILL be an issue after so many years?

Game mode: Online official
Type of issue: Bug
Server type: PvE
Region: EU
Mods?: No
Edition: Steam

Bug Description:

Your pet rhino gets a bit too cuddly and you end up inside the rhino’s mesh. You can’t move, you might be able to climb if you are lucky but as I’m currently in The Dregs I can’t climb anything. Suicide seems the only option and I have a damn long trip to get back to loot my corpse. I am frankly astonished that this is STILL an issue. It’s been around for years and years.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Be somewhere, anywhere with a pet rhino.
  2. Your rhino randomly gets a little skittish and wants to cuddle up closer.
  3. Potato server has a senile moment and does one of its usual little lag spikes.
  4. You and the rhino are now one. You are inside the rhino’s collosion mesh and there’s no way out besides death and potentially losing all you carry.

I should add that my character was stuck in this rhino with the feet off the floor and the back against an unclimbable wall.

Happened to me several times with a horse. I think there’s a setting in the pet option for the distance at which they follow.

Sometimes this also happens at an obby after maproom teleport but it can be avoided there by riding the mount while porting. It is in fact very troublesome… occasionally jumping frees you up.

Workaround: carry a katana. The charged attack should free you.

Jumping will usually work too. And yes, not only is it still a thing after so many years or whatever, but it’s actually gotten much worse. Now you can get the same kind of stuck on trees, rocks, your own horse, your thralls, and even occasionally the floor.

Yeah. If I kill a gazelle while I have a thrall follower, if after the kill I switch to a cleaver to butcher the carcass, my helpful thrall inevitably rushes in to help me with the kill, running straight towards the dead animal and ending up with his mesh overlapping mine. Thus far jumping has always freed me from this invasion of my personal space.

Some big monsters, especially those with a long body like rhinos and dragons, still get the player stuck in their mesh when they pivot on the spot around their central axis. Jumping can help here too, but you won’t usually make it out unscathed because the monster’s attacks can still hit you while you’re stuck in their mesh.

Some other monsters, such as the three-skull crested lacerta, seem to have a mechanism that displaces the player in some direction when the monster turns on the spot (which sometimes makes me end up above the monster, but it’s better than being inside the monster). This makes me believe that a solution to this rhino-undermeshing exists but has not yet been implemented to all critters that need it.

Yup, And here’s something which may also be relevant on the repeatability front: That sliding you’re talking about happens about 80% of the time when dismounting a mount. If your character dismounts too close to a tree for example, about 50% of the time the character will get stuck in the tree - it’s quite recreatable. It’s mostly (always?) trees that are interactable - not like the giant redwoods etc… So if my numbers are close to right and 80% of 50% is 40%, there’s about a 40% chance of recreating the bug.

Player brought a bug report.

Funcom “Go get a katana”

Player A: I have a bug.
Player B: Yeah, it’s a bug and it sucks. Here’s a workaround so you don’t have to suffer while Funcom gets around to fixing it.
Player C: fUnCoM sAiD gO gEt A KaTaNa

My deduction from these premises: CodeMage = Funcom.

One or more of the premises may be faulty.
