Instead of a paid DLC map, why not this...which would allow you to keep your word to the community?

I thought you left Exiles because you gave your base away.

Since when does a companies success limit the profits it should make.Tencents buyout shows the potential of Funcom and opens up capital for further game development.

I think you misinterpreted what was said, I never said anything about profits.

I responded to TwoJay who didn’t appear to know about the Tencent buyout.
I simply stated Tencent is a larger richer company.

Then I expressed concerns regarding what Tencent might do once they acquire Funcom.

I’m sure Tencent will help with development, I’m sure Tencent will make Conan Exiles more profitable.

It’s the HOW they do this that concerns me.

  • An ingame cash shop

  • Censorship

  • Loot Crates - boxes where the Item you want may or may not drop. Essentially Gamboling boxes.

  • Map Areas locked behind a paywall

  • Cash only items that give an advantage in game also know as Pay To Win

These are what concerns me, Censorship, gamboling boxes and pay to win are all unacceptable to me, and will result in my exiting the game.

I fully expect, if Tencent does become the sole owner of Funcom, for there to be a new lootbox mechanic in the game. Some new item that increases further the chance of ā€œnew apex pet (insert name)ā€, the ability to buy ā€œspecial thrall pack, with chance at unique thrall only in packā€, a new upgrade mechanic, with a chance to fail, that can be circumvented with ā€œlucky item Xā€, and ā€œmore new areas available now, with special resources and buildings not available anywhere elseā€, along with reminders every time I start the game to ā€œtop up now with Tencent bux for a better play experienceā€. At which point I won’t be playing the game, except fully offline.

Those things concern me too.My apologies.Hopefully they’ll continue to follow the profitable business model that Funcom has.

The whole skins thing. Are you thinking PVE? Cause that would ruin PVP.

No it would not. How would not automatically knowing the other persons build…their strengths and weaknesses, ruin PvP. If anything, just being able to look at somebody’s armor and know what their boost is, is really hand-holdy.

But more than that, it is really limiting on your personal style. You may have to run around in armor you don’t like, just to get the boosts you need.

For those that misunderstand, there are many ways to make money, and I am not somebody who thinks Devs should work for free, or that companies should not make money. However, what has been learned, through research, is that game titles die because not everyone is going to buy a new version of the game. yet, gaming communities are very much a social thing. For instance, the group I am with move from game to game. But we are not always playing the same game, and when that happens, the community suffers. One reason we may not play the same game is because some of the guys have limited gaming cash, and they have spent it on other titles they were interested in.

So, let’s say you have 12 people that really enjoy gaming together. You buy a title, and 10 of them really like it. The other 2 keep playing to stay with their friends. It’s an OK game to them, but their vote is for something else. So then, a new version of the game is released. The two do not wish to spend money on it. Another 3 can’t afford it at the time. So now the community splits. 5 go play another game they all have, while 7 move on to the new version of the game. This continues until the group is down to maybe 2 or 3 people. Eventually they lose interest in online gaming because they aren’t able to recreate the camaraderie they once had as a group. I have seen this happen with many groups, and research has shown this to be the case. It’s the very reason that FUNCOM allowed us to buy DLC, but play on servers with people that do not have it. The only restriction on the DLC is that you have to own it to create it. Others can use it and repair it. This make a lot of sense, if you are trying to keep a community together. All I am saying is that this should be the model for the new map. Putting it behind a pay wall is going to fracture an already small community. I saw many clans break apart as ARK DLC maps were released.

Since Heavy armor is meta, there is no free heavy gear ingame. This is going to be P2W more and more every day.

all valid points but what are the options?

free map - not really an option (my opinion). you can’t invest thousands hours of work without any return of investment. sure you can release dlcs like today to reinvest the map, if you have enough manpower to work on all the stuff: map, free content updates and more dlcs. funcom is not really such a big company staff wise

paid map - I’m with you with your concerns. if you want to switch to the new map some of your old buddies will left behind and/or leave. alternative you can stay with your old buddies on the old map

no map - also not really an option because it will end at the same point you expect for a paid map: players will leave but for other reasons. the current map is of a good size in my opinion but the map is old. i know every stone by name. content updates are not enough in the long run to make the current map enjoyable. we need a fresh map.

a complete overhaul of the old map is something i’ll leave out intentional. this would probably require a server wipe, which i don’t really think is a valid option. this would drive away far more players than it would bring new players or keep existing players.

for me personally the choice is clear: paid map, because i don’t see the other two options as real alternatives. i think a free map is unrealistic and maybe even dangerous for economic reasons. no map is also not an alternative in my opinion. we need fresh stuff.
