I’m seeing a lot of mixed opinions on the game.
A lot of hate is because of server administration and the addition of a battlepass.
Also there appears not be anything to do after you finish the game… which is… uh… an interesting complaint.
But looking at the reviews on steam… I’m a bit lost.
I plan of playing this game with a friend of mine; do we have to set up a server for that? Or can steam co op support it? Would you recommend co-op or server? And most importantly: would you recommend the game?
Definitely recommend the game. As far as starting in the game, I would recommend dipping your toes in Co-op/single player and start researching the wiki/youtubes. Test out the mechanics and see if that is fun. After a few days getting your feet wet, jump in on officials and try it out. No sense in you spending $ on servers if you won’t like the flavor of the game. If you like officials, no sense in $ on your own server. If you don’t but love the game, private servers are your best solution.
the complaints over official server administration is based on a drastic shift from complete lack of administration to a method of administration that is dependent on player reporting and the growing pains of this.
the battlepass is a brand new thing that WILL be coming in but not here yet. FC is trying to figure out the best way to keep interest in their aging game and keep everyone employed. The controversies of Battlepass will not inhibit your initial enjoyment of this game but may be problematic if you are the type of person that needs to be able to do everything possible in the game (IE the collectors and the 100% completors) since the Battle pass will force you to jump through hoops to collect everything.
OK so Co-op is great and all but your system has to be running it all the time to gain the benefits. Some of the grinding you have to do for building takes time to run (like each brick produced in your furnace takes 20 seconds or what not). If you co-op or solo, you shut the game down, your timer stops and so you put 100 bricks to be produced and each time you stop the game, it just pauses that until you relaunch the game. Official servers are running outside of your system so when you log off, you furnace is still churning out bricks so when you log back in, you can have your bricks made.
Open world and PVE are really good. Its a great time with friends and you can easily make new friends in this game. HOWEVER this game doesn’t give you a lot as far as direction. There is a back story you can discover but really you come off cross in a desert, naked and afraid. From there it’s up to you. Some things are far more obvious than others as far as clues and instructions but most of us have horror stories of our very first time in the game which is all great part of this game…the stories that come out afterwards.
Now DLC cruciality…that isn’t as simple as you would think. The majority of the DLC’s aren’t crucial at all. They have different building elements and armor/weapon skins but Funcom tried to make it all cosmetic based. The DLCs mostly offer cosmetic changes so you can look good.
The only one that is more than that is Isle of Siptah. That is a completely different map and that map is more geared towards the PVP side of things and less about survival. I view it as a different game entirely because the power of Siptah gear is so much more over the top that the base games Exiled Lands map. If you PVP in any way, Siptah will be the top DLC purchase because it is that overpowering.
Now more complications…they used to have something called server transfer where you could move characters and some materials between servers and between different maps. They have very recently suspended that due to some issues they have detected with no clear date they will bring the function back. So you very well could see Siptah gear in the Exiled Lands map but there is no way to get it yourself due to the loss of function that is now established. If you are PVE, not an issue. If you are PVP, could be disastrous .
There are some other things to watch for but if you are PVE (which I truly recommend at this time due to those other things that really messed up PVP world balance that just needs to burn out as people keep killing eachother) these things won’t be an issue for you.
I will stick to your first question agreeing again with @Bodin, (sorry m8 you are just a step ahead these days ) , yet I will suggest you to give it some days single player…
This game has the survival feeling, so doing your first steps solo is very important. I can almost guarantee that you’ll fall in love with it. Playing co op is not a good option because it has tender distance, so if you choose multi-player then go on officials.
If your goal is pvp, then choose easy servers to learn the content of the game the soonest possible. If your goal in strictly pve then official servers are your best choise. Welcome to the forum and hopefully to the best survival game you played ever .
For your rest questions @erjoh is more than capable to answer, I will just say that the vanilla game is the game, dlcs are cosmetics but really good, really, really, really, really good, yet not necessary for your begining, at all.
This is my favorite game, ive spent countless hours on it. It has both the fast paced twitch action pvp and raids that i love, and its also a relaxing builder game as well. You can build some massive stuff It does still have some jank and some bugs(i dont think it would have been near as much fun without them) but i would always recommend it. The boss fights you can choose the lazy way(t4 thralls) play it like a dark souls boss fight(you only)
This isnt much of a story game, although you can still fidn some stories and lore, its more of a players make the story kind of thing.
As for battle pass, i dislike that. But if it means more content and a prolonged game life im ok with it.
You can set up your own server, rent one, or play on officials(no mods on theese)
Coop is available, and so is single player
If you have not played the game, play Solo a bit to get a hang of it. Then swap to Official (briefly in my opinion) and decide a play-style (perhaps). Depending if you already know you are into PvP or PvE or Roleplay, etc, you can have a lot of fun learning things. If you have a couple of mates that also play, even better because then you can Clsan up in solidarity.
Personally, I did the Solo and then PvP before deciding very early to go to Private servers, ultimately just getting a few servers of my own where they can be moderated and have mods, etc.
Is the game worth it?
I have just shy of 8k game hours of Conan Exiles play, spready between Exiled Lands, Isle of Siptah and the amazing mod, Savage Wilds. If I look at the cost I have spent on servers, DLCs (all), game-price - all divided by time spent playing, Ithe monetary cost is something like 0.075 units of cash, so yes, completely worth it.
ps: if you have ever read the Conan the Barabarian books, watched the films, like fantasy and/or roleplay games, you should get many, many hours ouyt of the game before getting bored. I will try to remember to let you know when I get bored…unfortunately, the pending Conan v3 ‘Age of Sorcery’ release will make that sometime in dim, distant future!
The game has a steep learning curve and can be confusing and overwhelming for beginners. If you do purchase the game I recommend that you try and get an experienced player to teach you. PvE is laid back with little risk in loosing anything. PvE-C abother player can kill you so you have to learn how to evade or fight other players. PvP is full on destruction and chaos and you will probably loose everything within a week and find yourself waking up at the starting point naked again, this will either make you rage quit or be set on revenge.
If you do play PVP and after you get wiped, ask your attacker what failed in your defenses. It never hurts to ask and can be instrumental in your learning curve.
Erjohs got it right, alot of us will give you alot of pointers, hell i gave the one clan my full build and told them what gear to keep on them always. Some pvp clans are asshats but those guys usually get a fitting ending, for most of us pvp isnt personal, its just good fun.
The game itself is great and made well. However the toxic abuse and admin intervention made it unplayable when it comes to pvp. PVE i cant state but i heard people get ban there as well.
I am not going to read past your original post don’t want to see the answers 20 plus at the moment. Playing this game since ps4 came out had have a server most that time my opinion this game is worth everything my wife and I have spent including all DOC’S
It’s a bit of a mystery to me as well but the best I can figure it, we have two things happening at the same time here in these forums. We have a bunch of people who are very passionate about the game - this in itself is unusual to the point of oddity in my experience. That is, people passionate about a game rather than just enjoying the experience of playing it - or at least equally so. I see this with books and movies but not usually computer games to this extent. It’s like Star Wars or LOTR, there’s a fanbase who likes reminiscing and talking about the product as much or more than partaking in it.
The forum also engages and invites people who are having problems with the game - be it a bug or some perceived injustice. These two groups intermingle here to a flurry of varying social interaction - from conflict to a shared harmony and delight. Had I to venture some numbers I would estimate between Twitch, FB, Twitter, Redit, and here there are somewhere between 400 and 600 people participating in one way or another. This is a tiny minority when one considers there are about 25,000 Steam log-ins logging on in any given day and likely 75k ~ 150k unique individuals logging in per week.
That remaining lion’s share of players are most likely people who just like playing the game and do not have a desire or need to discuss it on social media. I think it’s because we see and read the minority groups that perceptions are what they are - as you indicate - losing the common man somewhat.
This game is relatively well behaved and can be fun and interesting in whichever mode you select (Solo via dedicated server, Single Player, Co-Op with a friend, online official servers solo or with a friend, and on-line solo or with a fiend or group). I would recommend the game to others but the mode(s) you select depend on the kind of experience you’re looking for.
True, very true. I can’t say that only Conan made me lost the sence of time, I can easily say 20 titles for fun, yet only this game held me so many years playing it, no other.
Apparently you have very good selective listening skills, as 80% plus support the new 3.0 changes. Also, assuming you ae referring to “server administration” as the wipes on officials for overbuilding, spamming etc, let me just say that 90% of these issues are the players fault, not Funcoms.
Most likely you are an agent provacateur, and you made this account to troll. To answer your actual OP, yes it is worth it. If you do not agree, find another game, or stop pretending you are a new addition to this forum, thank you.
