Need some help understanding Surges

, ,

Fellow Exiles I could use a spot of help. I would like summon my first Surge. However, despite having watched a few videos, there are a few things which I am still a bit confused about. Maybe Im just special haha. But I was hoping that some of you could clear a few things up for me.

Ok so to start the process I go to the Leyshrine of the Serpent, Drowned or Demon, as the other three are not funtional in their current states right? We move to the upper level, then for the cost of 10 hardened steel bars (not eldarium), we craft a ‘focus altar’ and pull the adjacent lever to initiate the process, correct? Now I am still a little unsure of the following:

  1. what role does the ‘???’ artifacts and ‘swirling chaos’ play in the process?
  2. what purpose do all of the shutters, screens/barricade and braziers at the structure serve?
  3. about Wild Surges. My understanding is that they are supposed to trigger around the map after the Maelstrom storm from the Tower dissipates. But the thing is that I am still yet to see a single one appear either in person or on the map! Am I missing something here?
  4. does which Leyshrine we perform the Surge at have any direct bearing on the type, quantity and constitution of the thralls spawned?
  5. I am an Offline Singleplayer. So I would like to know how long will any summoned thralls, both conscious and unconcious, remain at the Leyshrine until despawning? I am just wondering if I die of tow a thrall back to my base, will the others still be there upon my return.

Ok this should get me started. :smiling_imp: :metal:

I also found this guide incredibly useful.

SPOILER WARNING it has info on what kinds of enemies you will summon and some of their drops if those are things you want to figure out yourself.

  1. The amount of ??? will determine the surge level, requiring 1000+ to hit max level. Lesser is 1, unstable 2, great 50, and shining is 100. Place them in the focus alter for conversion and let them finish before pulling the lever.

  2. I would not worry about the shutters, braziers, etc. they are in no way necessary and are quite expensive to operate.

  3. Wild surges have been removed/disabled.

  4. The leyshrine you use makes no difference. The focus altar as explained below will determine which faction spawns.

  5. I cannot answer this one, I have no clue if they operate like typical single player spawns and refresh when you get out of distance. I would imagine, and hope, that they shrine will stay active. As mentioned get the wheels as close as possible and I’d suggest a bed roll.

Good luck. I also second the link Ulyssi posted. I still refer to that information at times.

Tuffman already answered this, I just wanted to clarify it a bit. The ??? essence (worst name ever) can be put into the focus altar to craft the swirling chaos. The proportions are as Tuffman described (e.g. each unstable ??? will give you 2 swirling chaos).

Depending on how many swirling chaos you crafted before pulling the lever, you will get a harder or an easier surge. A harder surge gives you better chance of getting better thralls.

While Siptah was in early access, the story went that if you used more than 1000 swirling chaos you would get a Calamity, which was supposed to be bad, but I don’t know what a Calamity is supposed to be, why it’s bad, whether it ever worked that way, or whether it’s in the release version of Siptah or not.

Calamity is supposed to be all beasts, but with that being said. I have never seen one, or heard of anyone summoning one.

Gentlemen thankyou all very much for your answers, very much appreciated!! I am going to generate some more individual replies as soon as time permits. I am fairly sure I know enoigh to get go about the process. But for now, a couple of general follow up questions.

Being an Offline Singleplayer, ie-a one man workforce, who is also only level due to limited playtime, I currently only have under 100 ???. I guess my question is, can I still perform a Surge without ANY awirling chaos at all? In addition to this, if you all feel I need swirling chaos to make it even worth my while, then I ask you all. How much swirling chaos do you all feel I would need to make it worth my while? What would be the minimum number that you all would suggest, if any?

You certainly can perform a surge without any ???. Whether it is worth it to you, depends on your goals. But of note, T4 crafters and fighters do not spawn until you hit the highest surge level, and it takes 200 ??? to hit the second tier surge. A tier 4 surge is soloable, it’s the only way I run them, but you will need top level gear and a top notch thrall.

It certainly won’t hurt to fire off a surge at the lowest level to get an idea of the mechanics, and there are some recipe drops and things you can’t get elsewhere(on second thought I do think they are obtainable with schematic fragments). But thrall wise, you’re better off spending time in the NPC camps.

You can 100% fire off surges with no ??? investment. It will trigger the level 1 surges for whatever region you build your alter for. I did one tonight trying to get my hands on a recipe that only drops in surges. As to what level is worth it, like others have said its really dealer’s choice. T4 crafters, thralls that start with 7400HP, armors for delving recipes are all goodies you can get if you pick the right place and level. I run certain level 2 surges to get my hands on Hyena welps, because it the only way to get them on Siptah and I love the little things.

Seeing that you’re in singleplayer, here’s one tip- Never ever admin spawn in swirling chaos. Once it’s in your inventory, it’s there forever. It can’t be moved out of inventory, nor can it be dropped.

Croms , aim for the chests , almos every camp hide a chest with the 3 types of ??? .
Plus I don’t know where you build but I asked to spawn NW and I found a camp that spawns the one head low human bosses that we had in noob river on exile lands . To this camp all the chests and crates are loot able , you even get hearts of a hero from this camp . Try it , you’ll see .

I have tried multiple times, in single player and on official servers, to summon a calamity surge, with 2000 chaos a couple of times, but never got anything but normal t4 surges. No idea if it’s bugged, disabled or just a random chance with more than 1k chaos.

As some mentioned , swirling chaos is to have higher levels of surge from level 1 to level 4 ( needs at least 1001 swirling chaos ) the process is very long if you use lesser ( 1 for 1 ratio ) or normal ( 1 for 2 ratio ) ??? essences , but if you use greater ( 1 for 50 ratio ) or shiny ( 1 for 100 ratio ) ??? essences it will be much faster !

as a single player indeed you’ll need to build your wheel the closest possible you can to the leyshrine because as soon as you get too far you encounter loss of knock out thralls like you always had .

the best ( when the storm was more frequent ) was to start the process right after a storm , since the storm will stop/finish the summoned surges

as a single player you may also want to use the center of platforms knock out mechanism ( you put decayed eldarium before the begining in each center ( there is 3 platforms ) , and if you see a thrall you want , pull the lever on the side ( the closest to the building ) of each platforms to knock out all knockable targets ( as a fair warning , the higher the tier of the thrall to knock the higher cost of decayed eldarium , and if there is several knockable thralls when you pull the lever it will knock them all out as long as there is enough decayed eldarium in the center )

the other mechanism like the braziers and the defense barricades are there for online gaming where people might want to steal your summoned surge thralls , so you won’t really need them on single player

The altar you craft at the begining will determine which region the summon will use for the thralls type ( darfaris , aesirs ect… )

it will be hard ( especially T4 surges ) as a solo if you are not well prepared since each waves ( there is 5 waves , that spawn 7 to 9 npcs on each of the 3 platforms ) spawns a mix of tamable npcs and 1skull npcs ( a bit alike the relic hunters named that gives a hart of a hero on exiles not too hard but still hits pretty hard ) with the last wave having a 3 skulls boss in one of the 3 platforms .

have fun my friend

That’s what’s been stated, the question is, has anyone actually ever seen a calamity surge occur.

Yeap I have, this was in a private server but we had the same settings as official, only mods were fashionista and better thralls.

We put in about 2k swirling chaos and it produced a calamity. If you haven’t done it, you’ll get a notification of summoning a calamity.

However, do take note that you can still summon a calamity with 1k sirling chaos, it’s actually a chance to summon it but a very low one. If you put in more chaos, then the chances increase as you put in more.

If you just want thralls, then calamity is… calamity. There’s no thralls but basically the mini bosses and elite beasts or monsters. For eg, the Eastern surge will bring the Fishmen and its elite counterpart, the central should have the gorillas and its elite ( jhebbal sag ).

Success!

Well my dudes, it is done, I have now completed my first Surge! I have only had the one so far, used my 10 hardened steel bars. Decided it was best to just start at a Tier 1 Surge so that I could get a feel for it. And although I did not need to, I created a mere 1 of Swirling Chaos, more just so that I could familiarise myself with the process. And I have to say, it was a lot of fun too! While I found it somewhat reminiscent of a slot machine, it is a downright awesome concept, and it was cool looking into the Exiled Lands through the sky.

Did a Tier 1 Surge and selected the North as a focus alter, because lets face it, it would be good to have more Crom devotees among my ranks, but received Vanir Loysings. Oh well…maybe next time. Unsurprisingly, no T4s, there was a T3 bearer (but I already had on), and then a T3 redheaded dancer, and while I already have a T3 dancer, I enslaved her anyway because she was attractive.

In all likelihood I will hold off and build up some more ??? artifacts first before attempting another, higher level Surge. Especially considering I am still not even at level 60 yet on the Isle of Siptah.

Tier 1 surges are really good for startups, especially for solo players that just want to have a good flow of crafting or fighter thralls.

I’d recommend doing straight to tier 4, 1k swirling chaos for best results once you’ve gotten enough good thralls with good armor.
