New player here and with some help I ’ m really enjoying the game.
But there seems to be a problem with my first batch of pets getting tamed. I have 5 shellbacks in the pen and after using this site to find out why they were not growing, I changed the food to plant fiber and vines. And they started to progress.
Then when they were about 2/3 done, they stopped progressing entirely. What is the problem? it has been many days in game time and I am at a loss. Do I need to change the type of food as they have stopped eating what is in there?
Once you put some food in, it should progress to completion. Typically, I use just one piece of food per animal and that is enough. So put animal in pen, then add a piece of food, put another animal in and then another piece of food and so on. I think this is also a bug as it should require food throughout the whole process. Try using a single pen versus the big ones. Not quite sure why its not working for you as it does for me.
Oh and progress is not based on in game day night cycles, its based on real world time, Typically animals should take about 12 hours +/-. Not sure if that depends on type ie. horse vs. bear vs. shaleback.
No, that is not a bug, the animal pens function as a crafting station, the baby pet and ONE piece of food are actually recipe ingredients to create the grownup pet. So it’s not like the wheels of pain for human thralls where the food is essentially a “fuel” for the station
It might be what @DaVice said above. Time stops when you close a single-player game so during that time there is no progression made and they take several hours to grow up.
You can compensate for this with some server settings, you can go to the settings menu, click server settings and the make me admin button, then you can change them in single player.
Under Pet and hunger, the first option, Animal pen crafting time multiplier.
The time it takes for pets to grow up gets multiplied by that value so lower is faster. Imo something like a 0.25 (4x faster) is quite reasonable for single player.
Thank you, this is really helpful. I am playing single and the ability to speed that up is great. And knowing which way to adjust that is critical for me as I understand little of what the settings do or how best to adjust. this is great. Thanks for taking the time to assist me. I’m loving the game and look forward to many hours of game playing ahead. Learning curves can be challenging though. cheers
