Me too, though I used some of the old katana dash back then to speed things along
And idk…
Here’s my take on it. I mentioned this a few times when SirDave and others asked my why I’m trying to preserve the katana.
It wasn’t for the damage itself… it was for the interesting nature of the combo itself and the multiple hit visual feedback I got from having a damage meter mod on etc. It was just cool.
But most of all having to execute a combo that isn’t just mindless clicking, was actually fun… and I have to admit, after 3.0 released with the new attributes and finally making a full agility double-jump build viable with a katana and it’s combo… it was probably the most fun I ever had with the combat portion of Conan Exiles.
So I really agree with @Talyna here, that the weapon not only lost damage, but what’s more important… it lost all of it’s uniqueness and “fun” factor and got degraded into a mindless spam-click weapon. That’s the part I would’ve liked to somehow preserve…
As such if we’re talking about buffing the katana, I would really like a version that promotes similar tendencies… some requirement of precision and proper execution of combo order etc. discouraging mindless click-spamming…
I would even go for reducing the damage of spam-clicked combos (punishing spam clickers with lower multipliers - which is entirely possible without any development as the comborules table supports it), at the same time buffing attacks that “make sense”
Now you’re reading my mind, is it, @Xevyr ?
Exactly. It was a weapon that actually required some skill to master, not only the attack sequences, timing and animations, but also positioning and oportunity. It was a FUN weapon to use. It still is, but opting for its use now is too punishing. Players will end up putting it aside, which is a shame. On pve it is still fun. You take it to the mounds and have a blast with an agility build. But for pvp I fear it is no longer an option.
Also… it’s a waste seeing such a well designed weapon/mechanics go to waste. A little tweak was ok. I agree. Getting the hammer was a shame. The guys who coded the katana must feel ravaged!
And what you proposed: spot on. Punish mindless clicking, reward mindful combat. Couldn’t agree more. I would love to see it coded like that.
It’s a samurai weapon. “Reward skill, punish laziness” would be a good theme to apply to the katana, no doubt.
What an outstanding thread, thankyou very much for this Talyna! It is so great to see players such as yourself and others starting to rally for buffs, unlike those constantly howling for nerfs. I commend you and I support your call to buff the Katana in the strongest possible terms! Thankyou Talyna.
I read and supported your call SirDaveWolf. I suspect that because it has never, and I do mean never really been a contender, many players flat out stopped trying to use it and many forgot about it entirely. But it needs some attention to be sure. It is very slow for what should be a very light weapon, and some of the hits are kind of ‘clumsy’ and difficult to connect. You know I for one love that yourself and other players are starting to identify the weapons which need buffs.
We can make it the most ‘interesting’ by removing everything special from everything else.
My personal opinion is I hate nerfs of any kind. But my opinion on that is irrelevant. The only way for the general community to learn is for everyone’s favorite weapon to be brought to the dirt.
I don’t know who flagged the guy, but what he wrote is not at all flag material, so I will quote him.
Dudes flagging him, are you nuts? EDIT: turns out the posts are made with an AI, so they were properly flagged!
Yes, nerfs are adequate sometimes, but generally Funcom is too heavy when they do it. The katana is a good example.
Are you sure about this?
This is amazing AND horrifying at the same time…
I heard about this form of AI. But can it really be used like THIS?
(Hope the thread doesn’t run off topic to much…)
You can see they all have a lot in common. The style is incredibly stilted, the word construct “it’s important to” repeats almost obsessively, and the content doesn’t add anything at all.
Unfortunately, yes. ChatGPT can, among other things, produce credible results for a prompt along the lines of “write a story about X in the style of author Y”.
I’m starting to believe that within the next 10-20 years, we won’t be able to reliably detect AI-generated content without the help of an AI trained to detect it.
Welcome to the future. I certainly didn’t think it was going to be this weird.
Yeah I saw some videos of it already, like writing a script of an episode for a biking channel, and a story about biking, and a guide to buy components and build a PC from them. It is still noticable that this is a bot, but it is one of the most advanced in this field. And those posts what @CodeMage just posted, I’m fairly certain are indeed artificially generated replies, I’ve seen a couple of that.
Spear is the most reworked weapon out there. Katana what did it get? Like 1 buff 1 nerf?
Katana is still a viable weapon. I dont get how people can say it needs “skill” when the moveset still is the same. It just dont do multiple hits in the dash. So if it now was such a weapon you could be skilled at, there should be no problem. Dash still does more dmg than most heavy weapons. Have hyperarmor more than any weapon. And so on. Sure, they can make heavy attacks a bit faster or make the moveset different, but anything else than that, no ty.
And yes, i rather see buffs to weapons rather than nerfs. But it has to be balanced. And 1 weapon cant get 1 buff then next update 3 months later another one gets it. It needs to happen at the same time, wich never happens. And also, weapons is getting buffed an new healing option needs to be introduced.
The Katana was nerfed to death because it was OP. I think devs need to take another look at the Katana and see how it can be a viable option rather than making it objectively a good weapon. The goal of balancing is to make every choice objectively viable. Not broken but viable in a sense of that it is a good choice if you know how to use it. Look at Monster Hunter, each of their weapons are viable options but none of them are good at everything. They are if you are. Meaning - if you’re a skillful enough hunter with your weapon, that means you’re good. Nerfing things has barely ever done any good.
This is taking me a couple years ago when someone called me a “bot” in here and i couldn’t understand what this is . Now i finally understand completely, thanks @CodeMage
But the general playerbase doesn’t realize that. The only way to do that is to nerf their favorite toys. Once everyone gets their favorite weapon marginalized, they might be reluctant to ask for nerfs in the future.
This is the key and is also very difficult for the devs. The majority of weapons currently are viable. Katana and great axe could use a little balance but that shouldn’t mean nerf to the dirt and yes javelins should get a buff after all this time
So you’re saying we need to let others feel how we feel so they know? I don’t intent to insult you with this but that idea sounds mighty petulant. Gotta approach this topic with a neutral mind. A Katana is a 2-Handed Agility slashing weapon. The only other 2-Handed Agility weapon are daggers. In a realistic sense, a Katana is a sword and not a dagger, logically, I think even the dimmest light in the shed agrees with that.
Having established that, a Katana being basically a slashing agility based sword, you got an open playfield to work with. Other weapons in the 2H Category are mostly Strength based, swords cause cripple, hammers sunder and axes have hyperarmor, you can shield with them aswell, Spears go for reach and daggers cause bleed. I would like to argue that MAYHAPS and that is just a suggestion give Katanas more armor penetration on their special moves.
Look, I know the Iai-move has been nerfed because it was already too OP but at its current state I believe it’s useless considering I’m not the only one who feels that way. I’m not asking to bring back triple strike but maybe give Armor pen a go. This would establish the Katana in its own right, making it viable but not good as some great enemies don’t give two ■■■■■ about their armor since their HP pool equals the pacific ocean or the entire calculation regarding armor doesn’t even apply.
In this case, I feel the Katana could be redeemed but that is ultimately up to the devs. However, to return to the actual point - punishing others for their idiotic opinions doesn’t redeem the Katana. What does redeem the Katana is a minor buff. I write this carefully as I know many read “buff” and immediately think of Arnold Schwarzenegger pumping irons.
