Poor mans rollback really bad. When is it safe to play?

Schrödinger’s Thrall? :face_with_monocle:

I don’t have a beef, @erjoh . I didn’t want my comment to sound mean. I wrote “scared little rabbit” joking. It was supposed to sound kinda cute! You getting inside your hidden base (the hole) with half a dozen thralls all cramped up, staying out of sight.
It seems the tone didn’t pass.

No, the thing that I disagree with is you thinking your playstyle should bind others, something I find unfair. You don’t need a gazillion thralls? Good for you. Some people do, and not even with so many thralls they manage to protect their bases when they are offline. You know thralls suck at base defense, but they might just delay the raiders enough time for someone to log in by chance.
Others simply like thralls. I don’t know if these are the cause of performance problems, but if they are allowed, you can’t expect people not using them if so is their wish. For many clans, having 200 top tier thralls, superbly geared up is a sign of prestige. It means they are serious about the moto of the game. Survive, build, dominate.

Now, shoo to your hidden den! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

u speak of pve being EEEEAAAASSSSYYYYY again?
come on a challenge awaits u…

or maybe u forgot that?

Ok apy poly logies then.

Not binding but we are talking officials here. That means we all share resources of the server. I’m not kidding when I say I know when one of the players with maxed thralls log in. I start stuttering and rubber banding. While you can say we shouldn’t bind players to playstyles what happens when the play style upsets the objective playability of the server? This goes back to just common decency for all of those playing. Yes you could go with 200 witchfire torches but since you are nice and share server resources, you scale back to 50 which is enough to see at night. Yes you could have 100 thralls but since they just sit there 99% of the time and only 20 respond to purges, you scale it back to 30. What you do on private or solo is your business but officials are public and no you shouldn’t have the right to negatively affect others just do you can play unimpeded. That not the way we do things in the real world.

You know it doesn’t work like that on pvp, @erjoh .
If the thrall cap affects performance, maybe FUNCOM should lower it. Until then, you can’t expect people to give up an advantage out of courtesy to the adversary. On pve, the number of thralls is not the most performance affecting factor by large. Huge bases outside the rules are.
Personally, I would cut the thrall cap by half and improve thrall’s quality.

I did this practically weekly to maintain tension and excitement for the server. I would purposely let adversaries remain hidden and rebuild even though my allies were hunting for them. I would allow bases to be ransacked to generate drama during slow times. I would purposely put weaknesses in otherwise flawless base designs to ensure it wasn’t “unraidable”. In doing so, the server was entertaining and all had fun. Also because I did these things, I was in complete control over what was lost or gained

You are not the usual player by a very long shot, @erjoh !
That’s one of the things I appreciate most about you.

Practically a decade of TT GM that my friend and I did makes you view games completely different. You look past the immediate gain and go for the overall best for the story going on.

As far as pvp not leveraging all advantages…yeah I know that’s what is going on and that is also the reason pvp is the state it’s in. That philosophy makes skybases and undermeshing morally acceptable.

No, it’s not. This is what “rollback” means.

What you were looking for are “reparations”, and that’s not feasible. From my own tinkering, I’ve learned enough about the Conan Exiles game database to know that restoring the lost thralls is not a process they could automate. And if it can’t be automated, that means it has to be done by hand for 780 different servers.

Not feasible.

As other pointed out, server rollbacks happen only in the most dire situations. The only one I’ve witnessed before this one was when a handful of cheaters found an exploit and terrorized a handful of servers with giant toons and admin powers. That was years ago and they only rolled back the handful of servers that were affected.

So, to answer your question, you can be certain that your progress when playing won’t be reverted at the drop of a hat, and only under the circumstances that might happen once in years. And even then, the rollback won’t revert the progress you made over those years; instead, it will happen precisely because there were many more players who would’ve lost years of progress without the rollback.

Rollback was a good solution - and the only feasible at least I can see.

Restoring thralls by hand? Near impossible. A rollback and an increase in farming rates is the least bad of all bad solutions.
If that somebody found or created something special over the weekend that isn’t easy to recreate, then that somebody may have a net loss from the rollback. But it’s still the last amount of pain for the community as a whole.

Also… keep in mind how big (or rather small) Funcom as a company is, and the Conan section even more so. After Amazon published New World, with all the money in the world, they did at least one, iirc even several rollbacks due to foreseeable bugs.
With CE, as was mentioned here, this is the first rollback in many, many years, and it happened not to a foreseeable bug, but apparently due to a slight oversight with crucial consequences, but a mistake that could have happened to everybody.
He/she who never made mistake at work shall throw the first stone. And whoever happens to throw that first stone… you’re either delusional or have a very easy job or are so f’ing smart that you should know better.

It’s annoying. But Crom, nobody got hurt.

I don’t know about that. I was climbing up when the server saved happened. Each time I got rolled back, I took fall damage

If they had a emergency response team they probably could have shut down all server’s and done a few hours roll back they didn’t at the time might be something that is considered . From what I’ve read after your thralls and armor and weapons decay there is no tracking what they had.
And they are taking steps not to release new material on weekends.

You sure? They ARE tweaking settings for the comp. So they will have to revert them to “normal” again. I’ll have my popcorn for that day.

It’s hard for me to understand why it would be impossible to restore only the thralls, even though at a higher cost. Yeah rollback actually means what you say, my mistake. “Poor man’s solution” rather.

New World is the pinnacle of mediocre output with lots of money. CE is certainly not in the same boat as that game, but neither are a lot of games.

To be honest I’m rather happy it turned out this way. I didn’t make lots of progress this weekend but I am farming a lot now :> It is good to keep them accountable for what they do. Especially since this isn’t a cheap game.

I’ll copy an explanation I wrote in another thread. Bear in mind that this is based only on the insight I gained by tinkering with the game database, and I don’t have the knowledge and insight Funcom devs have.

Yeah I see, true. But it would have been the opportunity to bring into existance a system of storing active followers and, maybe even making them tradeable. Then those players would get those thralls in this new storage.
Turn an issue into an opportunity!

Apart from this badass scenario, I guess the best thing we could have gotten was an early rollback. The second best is the rollback we had plus compensation.

I used to look down on New World. Back during my two-year stint at Amazon Game Studios, I was loaned to the New World project temporarily, and it was a lot more like Conan Exiles in certain aspects. You could build your own settlement and place all the crafting stations and the trading post and whatnot. And you could plop a claim flag in the middle of it and that would make it safe from other players’ attacks as long as you “fueled” the flag with gold coins. It looked like it would be a fun game.

After a while, I left AGS, but I kept thinking about New World a lot, and I signed up for the beta. By the time they released the beta, the game was almost unrecognizable from what I remembered. It was a run-of-the-mill MMO, with a bunch of boring quests and mechanics that didn’t interest me at all. So I stopped playing it and largely forgot about it, except to occasionally comment about it on these forums to say how it didn’t meet my expectations.

Last weekend, my kid wanted to play video games with me and he remembered I had New World, so he asked me if I wanted to jump in and play. I jumped in, discovered that my beta character was long gone and decided to start from the scratch. Fast forward to today and I’m hooked on New World a lot more than I expected.

The thing that’s so refreshing about it after Conan Exiles is how much attention to detail there is. I haven’t even tried PVP in it yet, so there might be stuff that’s unbalanced in that aspect, but I love the fact that the game doesn’t feel unfinished.

It’s been slightly more than 5 years since the official release date of Conan Exiles – and I’ve played for more than that, since February of 2017, in the early access – and it still feels unfinished. In fact, it’s the only game I’ve played that grows “more unfinished” with updates.

In comparison, New World looks carefully designed. There are synergies between different mechanics, the progression (so far) has been relatively smooth, and advancing in one aspect drives the need to advance in another. I keep expecting to start getting bored, and the game keeps giving me more stuff to do to engage me.

Oh, and none of the elements I’ve played with so far seems like it’s a purely optional gimmick. For example, when I saw there was fishing, I rolled my eyes, expecting it to be a toy game mechanic with no purpose except to make screenshots and brag about the size of the fish you caught. Instead, I discovered that fish oil is a necessary cooking ingredient, which is necessary for certain kinds of food, which you need for all sorts of other gameplay reasons.

What I’m trying to say is that the game design seems to be tight: deliberate, cohesive, and coherent.

Contrast that with some of the recent (and not so recent) changes in Conan Exiles. For example, thrall conversion time was shortened so much that the greater wheel of pain is purely cosmetic. Another example is Acheronian pick: more expensive to craft than the hardened steel pick, but it’s “lower tier”, so you can’t harvest star metal with it. I don’t have to go on, I’m sure everyone can think of a whole bunch of examples.

I can’t say if my current infatuation with New World is a short-lived fling with a game whose primary charm is that it treats me better than Conan Exiles, or if I’ll end up spending thousands of hours on it, just like with Conan Exiles.

I know one thing for sure, though, and I would love it if Funcom understood this: the first paid expansion for New World is coming out soon, and despite having spent less than 48 hours of play time on that game, I’m going to buy that expansion. Why? Because the game doesn’t make me feel like the only concern its game designers have is to drive the monetization.

New World feels like its devs either care more for it than Funcom devs care for Conan Exiles, or they’re allowed to express that care in their work.

Might actually give it another chance. My impressions of it might be outdated from when it launched.

With the predecessor, Age of Conan, the game felt even more unfinished. Not only mechanics wise (the game had a lot of disjoint systems in it like Shrines of Bori) but also with the content itself - after the initial part of the game in Tortage NPCs all of a sudden were no longer voice acted lol.

What the game does have is aesthetic cohesion. It’s also for the Conan books/comics what LotRO is for LotR - best option out there. That game is also suffering from a bloat of disjoint systems to the point it’s overwhelming to a returning player (or even a new player). I guess both CE and LotRO focused on selling the actual game world to the player. It’s pretty much their strong point.

Nothing in this game is hard to get.

They made it easier now ESPECIALLY with thralls.

This is the first time ive seen it happen on officials- so once in 2 years.

Sounds good on paper. There’s only one problem: if they had the capacity to do that, the game wouldn’t be in this state.

Look at their track record as a company. That should be enough to instill some doubt.

Now on top of that, look at the recent developments with this game. Since Tencent bought Funcom, there has been a noticeable shift in the focus, but the Age of War goes beyond that. My personal opinion is that the team has shrunk and the game is being allotted less resources.
