Purge Panic! help to prepare?

Please be gentle with my , ermm, lack of knowledge , but the idea of the purge scares the hell out of me. I didnt even know what it was, i just kept seeing that indicator going up and i looked it up online and i saw taglines of, defences, enemy plunder attacks etc etc and i was like WTF??? i dare not look into it further through fear. I find the game and combat quite challenging, the idea of multiple enemy npcs attacking my barracks and stores is killing me.

i can handle medium size camps , maybe 2 enemies at same time , could i handle a purge?

Last night the first purge horn sounded and i was out exploring, i panicked and ran back but nothing happened?

i would appreciate any help to prepare and plan for a purge? What the hell is a purge?

loving the game folks, hope you are too. wouldnt dare play online, id get ruined and robbed!

Purges may or may not happen to you, hey can just happen to someone else whose purgemeter is about the same as yours.
I just missed my first purge. Came home, logged in, missed by an hour (according to log).
Base was missing about 20 foundation blocks and a couple of walls. My archers didn’t kill them but pets and thralls inside did. Didn’t lose any of them!
Log shows it lasted almost 1 hour.
Hopefully won’t miss it next time.
You probably don’t have much to worry about, it’s supposed to be pretty exciting
