Purge spawn location question

Can purge npc spawn inside a building?

  • inside rooms with closed doors?
  • inside rooms with open or no doors that lead outside?

Had a few spawns outside the base as well on rooftops inside and not sure how I should place my thralls when the next purge starts.

Yes. If they can’t find a path to your base (because it is on an island, or on a big tree), the game teleports them into your base. Clever nordheimers destroyed my T3 altar and half of my base this way weeks ago.
And because the purge did not get a significant update/patch since then I’m guessing this behaviour is still present.

Even if the purge can find a path into your base, they’ll still teleport in there.

Always assume for a teleporting purge.

Check Map for the X, and you can figure about which foundation pieces is the attack point. So if you end up with teleporting purge, you have pretty good idea were to move pets and thralls. Or just gas orb hell out of it. XD

I think it depends on where you start building your base.

We once had some treehouse bases where one treehouse was the first thing built and purges would spawn up in that half the time, even though we had tons of stuff built on the ground also.

Another time we had a pillar base where we started with the landclaim and purges would always spawn in the landclaim.

I’ve noticed if you have more than one base eligible to attack by a purge, the AI will target the ones that are the closest to you at that time. In single player.

I think it’s different in SP because it only loads the local area of the world.

Online I think it’s either first built or most active.

Purges target the first foundation piece that’s laid down. So if you are thinking strategically, build your gatehouse first. Use that as your temporary shelter until you can get your “proper fortress” established.

Keep your gatehouse connected to your “proper fortress” (main base) so that the computer reads it as all one base and not two separate bases. That’ll keep the focus target of the Purge on your gatehouse. If you break the connect, the “two bases” will be assigned new identifying numbers (this is in the code that tells the Purge what to go after). So keep them connected to channel the Purge where it should go.

Whenever possible, keep your “proper fortress” covered with slanted roof pieces or ramps. NPCs don’t like teleporting onto uneven surfaces. They still will sometimes, but it helps cut down on the frequency.

Remember, the Purge will attack player-owned buildings en route to its target. So if you have broken the connection between your gatehouse and your “proper fortress” where the computer has assigned new numbers to “each base”, it may still make the Purge march to your “proper fortress” in the direction of your “gatehouse” and attack that “gatehouse” on the way to your “proper fortress.” In other words, your layout might still work even when not connected.

And if the Purge is targeting your gatehouse, even if they teleport inside, it still keeps your “proper fortress” safe (usually). You might want to set up your gatehouse like an arena – line the walls with archers so when they teleport inside, they show up inside a kill zone. The good part about lining the walls with archers is that they can fire both outside and inside – so no matter where the Purge shows up, you’ll be ready for them.

And above all, whenever possible, allow for only one way the Purge can approach you. For example, if you plan to build your “proper fortress” in the middle of a lake or river, start by placing your gatehouse on the shore, build the bridge to where you want your “proper fortress” to go so the Purge approaches the gatehouse first (since NPCs can’t swim). That way the Purge approaches you from only one direction (the gatehouse). And as an added benefit, if the Purge looks like its just wiping you out, take out a section or two of your bridge so they can proceed any further. They may wipe out your gatehouse and some section of bridge, but you’ll save your “proper fortress” and everything in it.

My last purge spawned inside a building (with free enrty from outside) which I placed almost two weeks after I finished my main base. did not build anything for these two weeks.

So maybe they target the first piece you place after you cross the purge line on the purge meter.

Sounds more like a case of reading your structures as “two” bases. They just targeted the second one instead of the first one. The computer assigns a building piece ‘code’ to each base and its respective connected pieces. (see my above description for more details on that).

Yeah I don’t know how purges work with the “new” leashing rules, but in the past I’ve sometimes kited purge mobs to other players buildings, climbed on the roof and watched the purge destroy their building instead of mine
