Thrall died without cause

As our settlement grows, we’ve captured quite a few Thralls. However, something strange has been happening lately that’s left us confused — every day, some of our Thralls go missing, usually the worker-type ones. We checked the server logs, but all it says is “xx died” with no further explanation.

After looking through past discussions about this issue, I realized that this problem has been around for quite some time. Unfortunately, there still doesn’t seem to be a real solution to it.

Honestly, it’s really frustrating to see Thralls mysteriously dying every day. This is not a cheap game, yet it feels like we can’t even play it with peace of mind.

Does anyone have a practical solution to this problem?

Note: I’m playing on an official server.

Living Settlement thralls, so crafters/bench thralls, are subject to a serious bug where they are killed. The reason and troubleshooting to prevent it has been elusive.

Vote here to temporarily turn off Living Settlements on Official servers until it is fixed and share the link with your friends: Turn Off Living Settlements on Official Servers

frustrating, I know…but no actual solution that I am aware of.
The only guess I have is, walling in your base, like literally no doors or gates.
But, yeah not a solution really. I just walled it off and it stopped happening…well it happened less.
I stopped giving them expensive armor and weapons though.

The problem is living settlements…the solution is to delete that “feature”.

Now, like Raudl has explained, walling is about the jist of it.

Wall them in with no doors in small “jails” if you want to take it a step further. I have not lost 1 thrall from this bug since putting my thralls in 1x1s from Beta, but this makes the whole point of “Living Settlements” irrelevant. If you’re ok with that, its not a solution just a workaround.

Thanks for your response. I’ll try keeping them jailed in one spot and see what happens.

The prison doesn’t seem to work.
I built walls on a single tile of ground and locked the thralls inside,
even forbade them from using any tables or chairs that slaves could interact with.
But the result is that they can still teleport to wherever they want to go…

I’m tired. If they want to die, so be it.
In just one short week, almost all of my craftsmen are already dead.

Check this out, with this menthod i lost no Thrall anymore. I cant name a location in siptah but for exiled lands this workaround is fine.

So - after the latest patch i thought i give it another try and started on a new server…
Set up a small starterbase in the desert - everything seemed to be fine. Moved base into the docks of Xel-Ha yesterday - lost 5 of my crafters today, including a shieldwright.
Honestly this SUCKS!
Please make living settlements optional for each player - another downside is my workbenches are empty all the time and the thrall keep sleeping in MY bed, even i disabled it for thrall use.

I love this game, i really really do but it keeps getting harder and harder to keep playing..
Don´t get my starting on the mess with the inventory all the time, but thats not the topic here.

Please fix Living Settlements in a way we stop losing our precious crafters. Make it work, make it optional or get rid of it, just please fix it.

Thank you for your suggestion. I’ve already started building defensive structures and assigning combat personnel.
When I went to survey the area, I noticed that other players are doing the same, so maybe you’re right.
Hopefully, this will help solve the issue of thralls suddenly dying.

Building a safe zone at G9 didn’t help — I lost 4 more Thralls after I finished it.
I’ve already lost a total of 9 Thralls today… orz

Man that sucks so much, sorry for that :frowning:

After losing 8 thralls the only thing that’s worked for me is putting all my workers in cages, and have them do the sitting emote. If they’re standing in the cage they’ll still escape and wander the base/die but I have not had one get out/die when they’re sitting.

I lost this day one Thrall… jeah it sucks absolutly, i’m not exactly sure they fall sometimes in the ground or knocked down bei the enemies. How much HP have your Thralls, tehre a maxed lvl? I think this help a lot.

They are at max level 20, have 1000 armor, and are also equipped with Unique-grade weapons.

I’m quite certain they weren’t killed by enemies, but were forcibly erased by the system.

Damn… jeah i think they fall into the world and died. I lost a Thrall last day again after a while at playing… maybe its a point of luck that are not so many for me… sorry to hear that. Thralls die with me, but only a few and sometimes not for days. Sorry, I thought it might help…

They are clipping. Thru your floor or a wall

Add foundations underneath them. Or move them up 1 level

Wonder if it will be addressed in 6 months in the next patch?
Or if the dev period between patches is being extended to a year now?

So I have had this issue too. And I found one in the middle of dying. When looking at my follower list I noticed my armor was missing. They were in my follower list but they were greyed out as if they were not at the base but somewhere else. I used Rescue thrall and got them back before they died. To me it looks like they are falling through the map and dying from either falling damage or starving. But it is not instance because another thrall was missing and I used rescue again but had to wait for the 5 minute timer and still got them back. Until fixed I recommend checking your thrall list when you log to look for any thralls that are supposed to be at your base but are not showing that way on your follower list. Rescue them problem temporarily solved.

This has happened to me often. More often than not, it’s my crafters.
I haven’t lost one in several weeks but these are the changes I’ve implemented.

Limited the size of my main compound.
Limited how many thralls I have in my main structure.

I have any extra or not often needed crafter —named thrall in different outposts.
Ex: the taskmaster driver is in an outpost along with the workstation.
Extra temperwright I found in the tavern is in another outpost just to keep him safe.
I’ve gotten rid of extra thralls and those I wanna keep, I’ve moved most of them out of my main home into the outposts.
I’m in an official server in siptah.

This happened a lot in exiles too but after one of the updates, it went away.

@LostBrythunian
If such a serious issue won’t be fixed until June, that’s just ridiculous.

@MsGurrl
Thanks for your suggestion. I’ll give it a try if I have time.
