Trying to place items made me scare my dog…

I tried to keep my frustration from getting the best of me but no. Apparently the sound I made caused Jax to dive under the couch. WTF is view obstructed? Above and around nothing. Building in this game can lead you to drink.

I’m guessing it obstructs the view of the attending thrall?

Think it’s a pathing thing for lively villages.

New playthrough since March 25th, I’ve got this cramped AF base. I have sighed and rolled my eyes so many times because of this damned view obstructed.

If I could understand WHY it was implemented I might be able to accept it. I cannot think as to why it is necessary though.

It is an anti-cheat thing for PvP that is working a bit more than was likely intended.

It’s a bug… try crouching at base level. I’m surprised no one in this topic mentioned it as it’s been mentioned here before.

When I first noticed it, it was like a signal saying the player is in the way. It could be as simple as that.

It’s very unfortunate that there isn’t a better way to prevent people from placing bombs inside someone’s walls thru clipping hijinks.

It would be nice if this was a PvP, PvE-C server feature only.

Yes that is frustrating. When I get this, which is always, I usually go into first person, which solves it sometimes. Crouching as mentioned before also solves some of those “View Obstructed”, issues.
I agree though, this is another frustrating janky implementation of something we do not need.

No thrall, private server living settlements off, trying to place bench in the middle of an open floor.

Same. Since I’m on a private server I don’t build big bases. I almost prefer it, I don’t care for running to and from “wings” to do stuff.

Yeah I’ve been seeing this crap too. NOTHING is obstructing my view except some incompetent coders.

Were it not for incompetent players who can’t compete without cheating, they wouldn’t need to code such countermeasures.

I don’t remember specifically. Probably something Xevyr said while looking through the devkit, that’s where I get most of my information on the inner game mechanics.

You’re both probably right about the purpose and if so it is a good reason. Judging by how others have commented on the code structure this is probably their only feasible option.

They did just go way too hard on it considering I can be standing in the middle of nowhere with nothing around me and still get View Obstructed.

Now I wonder if they do try to fix it is it going to turn into having to remove it entirely? Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I always assumed that expanding on Overlapping with Another Object or Terrain would make the most sense, it kind of goes hand in hand with View Obstructed.

The problem with that (as I understand it) is they tried it before - making all placeables require extra space around them. The result was that PVE lost the ability to build with meaningful freedom and, for example, the chess set could not be set up as the pieces required more space around them than a single square on the board. My guess would be that they tried it this way this time, to avoid recreating that problem.

(To be clear - I have no dog in this - I use a mod to avoid the problem of these limitations - I’m just suggesting why they may have opted to try it this way this time. And before someone comments that ‘being able to set up a chess set isn’t important’ - a) that’s one specific example, and b) it was a dlc item that they charged money for and then completely invalidated in the attempt to fix an issue that exploiters were using. The problem, as always, is the exploiters not the people who want to play legitimately and are not happy about the way the fix is attempted.)
